whats some of the best sprocket combo's
i see most folks go 1down in front,2 up in tha back.(16-43) an how does that compare to 17/44 gearing...
does wght play a factor, or u gear by ur wght to get most out of ur bike.

There's no definitive answer to that, it depends on whether you want top speed or acceleration and on wheelbase.
____________
Candy Thunder Blue 2006 ZZR1400
Stock wheelbase
Max: 205.4 mph in 1.25 miles
2012 ZZR1400 in Golden Blazed Green
Brock CT Full System. etc
Max: 203.1 in 1 mile (so far)

17 44 is a higher ratio than 16 43
divide little number into big number.........
front into back, and that will tell you.........
You gear for your bike, not what someone else is running. Some go for top of 5th some top of 6th............

In general you gear for your weight and riding style and preferences...........i would also look at how much time you spend on the highway, the strip and stop and go in town.
As for the ratios, 16/43 is 2.69, while 17/44 is 2.58..............only thing is, you will need a new chain to go 17/44, while you can go 16/41. 16/42 or 16/43 with a stock chain.

stock is fine for me, if you are drag racing gear it down, salt flats gear it up, can't decide leave it alone

I like a frt sproket with larger radius, and more teeth, the bigger the circle the more efficient it is. Also, they last longer....chain and sprokets.

Is most of your commuting on the highway or stop and go in town?
Also how do you feel about the stock gearing, and what is your riding style, would you like longer more mellow gears and lower RPM highway cruising or do you like shorter snapier gears and more acceleration.
If your commute is mostly stop and go in town or 70 MPH or less, like Dubious sated on a previous thread, you might not see any mileage increase or might actually see decreased milage and decreased clitch life if you go to higher gearing..............now if most of your riding is 90-120mph highway cruising then you will very likely see increased mileage from going to an 18/41 or similar ratio.
Keep in mind gearing is a compromise and you would be giving up some acceleration and lowend snap for lower RPM high speed cruising.

Dubious, sorry to hijack the thread, but did you say on a previous thread you are an oil/energy consultant in Alberta?.......................if so would you mind if I PM'd you and picked your brain with a few quick questions???

For the 14, I REALLY like ratios between about 2.60 and 2.66
Here's a list of some key ratios:
18/41=2.28
18/42=2.33
17/40=2.35
17/41= 2.41
17/42=2.47
17/43=2.52
16/41=2.56
17/44=2.59
18/47=2.61
16/42=2.63
17/45=2.65
18/48=2.67
16/43=2.69
17/46=2.71

Yep you could easily go down a couple teeth in back with no problems. I wouldn't go up in gearing at all. Leave it stock for highway/commuting, drop it some if you're wanting more giddy-up-go. Mines a beast with stock gearing..I personally wouldn't want it too much lower. Its faster than hell now, wheelies and lights the rear on demand, and still makes an awesome highway bike.

thanks, it's just for the track, right now i'm 17-44, still got plenty of top end for 1/4, i 'm also 215lb's 6'2. most riders are always mostly smaller then me, sixty foot 1.55 last time at track, have did better in past, tryin to see if i change my sprocket would that help any , an still keep a decent top end.

Bayou and Ninja, what gear are you guys in when you cross the line...............my guess is that with 17/44 it would be 4th gear and 16/43 it would be 5th gear...........i'm assuming the extra shift would cost time and wondering if it would cost MPH as well?

Most of my commuting is highway....90+ most of the time. I average 40 mpg...just wondering if I could pinch 1-2mpg out of the bike.

if thats what your looking for it could possibly be worthwhile............18/41 would probably drop the RPM 400-600 rpm at 90 +

i 'm in louisana, but go to miss track a few times..
the weather is different down here, cause i see times posted on here from folks up north they doing 140 something runing low 9"s, 150 something runing high 8's.. down here in louisana, we run good mph, but our times an't like that, i ran 156 got low 9's, i 've ran 161 got high 8's..
my bike the way it's set up, i had a 65 shot set up in it, last i did tha 8was 123 i think, ran a decent time.,
now i have a 80 shot of wet, i should stay in the 8"s, but i want to run my bike up north.
even the horse power is different down here, i pull 173 with pipe an pc,brock smeg, then i added cams, pistions, head work, i pulled only 195 on motor plus 65 shot which netted me only 48 true horses so that's 233 hp, wilburn dyno's my bike, one thing i will say, my bike performs well when it lv's wilburn, i never under stood how guys where pulling more then me,with way less work, then my man said that guys where geting dyno but it was not corrected of something, a different switch. then he showed me my bike on that mode , it was crazy numbers, i felt better...so for big guys ,i just try to build my bike to match my wght, cause lil guys an't bullshitin....i 'll be at hattisburg this weeken, an i 'll keep my timeslip an show u....i have to email it to u, cause i can't post pic's up here.
my email is shortyline@yahoo.com i talk more in detail about my bike to u, an ur's see if we can come up with something just to see if we can do better.
