Strange vibration/knocking...

Alright....it's been happening for awhile, only now it got a lot worse.

History:

2007 ZX-14
15k miles
Stock chain and sprockets (good condition)
all standard maintainence has been done

When I start out from a stop...if I don't feather the clutch heavily...I feel this heavy vibration in the pegs and a knocking sound. When I am going at speed, it's just a knocking with vibration only under acceleration. If I pull the clutch in while at speed ad coast, I feel the and hear the knocking.

I at first though something was loose or misaligned, but I adjusted the chain and checked the torque on the front sprocket and rear sprocket, etc......

Still no change.....

Any ideas?

Is the knocking speed induced?? i.e. faster you go, faster the knock??

put the bike on stands (front and rear) and rotate the tires by hand with the bike in neutral. You should be able to narrow the source down further (front vs rear) and maybe someone can come up with so ideas.

I tried that...I can't duplicate the same sound while it's on the stands....I even had my dad sit on the bike to see if it was caused by weight, but nothing looks out of the ordinary and no sounds are being emitted. If I had a dyno wheel I could probably figure it out....but I know it is coming from the rear somewhere though...

When the bike is standing still it does not do it....but if I am moving it does in gear or out of gear...but I have to be moving....that's what led me to the rear wheel/chain/sprockets....

I would look at the clutch basket ..There was been two cases where the bolts behind the clutch basket that hold the bearing retainer have come lose .. Pull the clutch cover and check for free pay (in and out as well as side to side ) in the basket ...

One other thing i would look at the the clutch plates ..I have had one plate that broke and a small part of it got caught between the ring gear on the basket and the crank drive gear ... It Made one hell of a knocking sound ....

If any of that stuff was loose? Would they check it under warranty?

They should ...They mostlikey will not cover it if it's just the clutch plates but they should cover the basket if that is the problem ..Have you had the dealler ride it yet ? Or asked them about it ?

I am kind of anti-dealer....I am pretty good at fixing my own stuff....but if this gets any more into unfamiliar territory, then I will bring it to the dealer and have them check it out.

Weird as it may seem....I have come to the conclusion that I need a new chain.

I tightened my chain more than I normally do and it stopped the shaking/vibrating ALOT. So I think it was the chain hitting the chain guide? I dunno...but the guide looks fine. So hopefully a new chain will fix it.

Yup...a full kit. Always the routine. Don't want something breaking while doing 120.

The chain looks fine....no kinks, no tight spots, no visible stretching, cleand and lubed every 250 miles......oh well. As you said...I got my money's worth out of it.

Thanks!
