Do you stop or flee ?

Scenario ...

Heading to work on the last stretch of road.
Decide to do a nice roll-on to 8k in 2nd gear.
Hit about 60+ when you see a cop going opposite direction switching lanes fast to do U-Turn.
Lights come on but you are way ahead, ready to make the next right before the last left into work...

Do you keep the pace, haul ass into parking garage ... or ...
Slow down and play dumb when he gets to you.

You know he's coming for you ...

Use to run away (back in 70's)... today I stop. Here, its a felony. It seems like now, you end up with a crashed bike, in the hospital, and a felony on your record. Besides I don't ride much on the street anymore.

In many states and some provinces now, the penalty for excessive speed - lets say 30 mph or 50 kph over the posted limit are so excessive now, riders that would stop with no question are now prepared to 'roll the dice' and go for it.

When the penalty for a 'crime' grossly exceeds the severity of the 'crime' in most riders mind, then people will tend not to comply with the law.

If you are looking at a possible loss of your bike or license for excessive speed then other wise law abiding riders are going to go for it and not stop.

Sure to be riders killed due to the excessively punitive speeding laws now.

There are a lot of variables to consider when running:

1. Do you know the area you are running in?

2. Is there a chance you may be recognized on your next ride in this area?

3. Are your skills really up to run?

4. Do you have any type of PBA cards, badges or names of cops to throw around if you stop?

5. If you are in a club, are you wearing your colors? If so, see questions 1, 2, 3 & 4.

My answer to this, Under ideal conditions and pending the right answer to all of the above questions, are in my favor to pull over I wil. If I am somewhere that I know that I am almost certain to be hemmed up with 30 cop cars around me, you best believe that I'm gonna kick down 2 and he/she are gonna have to work for that ticket. I caught a reckless driving for someone else back when I fisrt started riding. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Boy I would like to comment further...

Due to the fact this is a public board... No comment at this time...
I am really trying to bite my tongue...

Aw hell...
Ontario...
If I am speeding you can bet it will be above the norm. So I loose my bike?
I am going to pull over like a good citizen so they can crush my ride, put my ass in jail and pay a severe penalty for speeding.
People its cheaper to steel in this province. Break into a house and get the shit kicked out of you and if you survive sue the home owner for bodily hard the rest of your life. They always bartered down gun offences, let criminals get away with murder. But hell if you get caught speeding your really screwed. A rapist has more rights in this province.

Cheap vacation though.
Loose my job and I can go on social assistance. Maybe even welfare, till I get my money back from the system for my lost bike.

ya... Better than running any day. I mean our area is full of drunk drivers. But they focus on speeding. Gotta fill the local coffers. If they throw the drunks in the can nobody would be driving but me and a few others. I have to clean vodka bottles up steady from my property.
They drive by and throw the bottles.

I fu*n hate the subject. Law in this province is so fu*d up. Everyone worried about speeding.
I am seriously thinking of getting the hell out of Ontario. Over taxed and bull of bullshit laws.
ok I am ranting now.
I am done.
Sorry.

We all ride in a very uncontrolled environment as it is, even when obeying the laws. You are only risking more of a fine, possible jail and at the worst death if you try to run. The best thing to do and trust me I know, is this. Pull over immediately, wait for the cops to get there, be respectful, apologize but never lie and let the chips fall where they may. You have a better than 50% chance of getting a reduced ticket and smaller fine, or warning if you admit you were wrong. be humble. You will have a greater than 50% chance of things being really bad and getting worse if you run. You will not be paying attention to what's going on as much as you are wondering if they are catching up on you. It's not worth it.

Keep in mind these cops have worked many motorcycle accident scenes that resulted in some pretty nasty stuff and don't want to write a ticket just for the sake of doing it. As they say " to serve and to protect ". Let's keep it on the drag strip or track days for the fun and games. those are controlled environments with an ambulance there and no cars to pull out in front of you, dogs, trees, street signs and children.

Remember " Speed doesn't kill, it's the sudden stop that does ".

Man I'm out of there, you know the area . Just play dumb if they actually get close enough for you to have to pull over. I can't even count the times I was out there chilling and a couple of bikes blow by, do you think they really know your the one doing the speed limit . No they always stereotype us and let us sort it out through the judicial system. I for one am not the one . Can't get the one they want, get the last one or the one they can catch up to.

It's not running until they're behind you with the lights on, right?

I would have kept my pace and should I have gotten to work without him ever getting behind me...then I never ran.

That's exactly what I did. I got to the next right just as the lefties were finishing, so I slipped in front of the traffic. then 1/2 block down got lucky and caught the green light to turn left into our work street. 15 secs later safely out of view in parking garage behind building.

Now of course you know what's going to catch up to me right? .... K A R M A !

Karma is forgetless bitch, I'll most likely get a ticket now for doing 5 over in my truck, in a construction zone (fines double), with a brake light out, and a tranny prostitute in the x-cab.

Well, everything except the tranny.

Stop, or at least ease up, it might not be you they want.

Here's a story about a friend of mine. He was riding back from a meeting, fast. He saw the lights coming up behind him through the traffic and decided to run for it. After getting ahead he turned off onto a side road and hid until it was dark, then he went home. Later that evening came the knock on his door. They explained that they hadn't been after him, they were on an emergency call for something else and would have gone past him but when he took off they couldn't ignore it, they threw the book at him. There's a hard lesson there.

I have never been a cop hater, in fact I support their role in society to protect the public, but our governments have lost focus of that......its not about protecting the public, its about revenue nowadays:

I have had enough dirty tickets to fight, lost income, and wasted days in court.
If the car behind you is speeding they will pick it up, and give the bike a ticket everytime, and then you have to fight it in court....

They have never caught me, nor have I been chased for stunting or doing stupid speeds, cause I don't do that shit anywhere near town, on busy highways, or in a group,.... but I have had them nickel and dime my license to shit.
10 KM (6 MPH) OVER, AND TICKETING ME WITH 20 KM (12 MPH) OVER.... multiple times gets sour real fast.
$ per hour, its not worth ticketing someone for 10km over, and if the quota hasn't been met, or the radar trap has not been successful, they will compensate.
Knowing 95% of all ppl wil not fight it in court, and 80% who do will lose.

Discrimination and stereotyping:

They pull me over for no reason on the bike, and same with my lifted truck....
I guess since I am an enthusiast, i must be doing drugs or drinking right?

WRONG,
I GAVE UP ALL THE BULLSHIT AND BAD HABITS WHEN I HAD KIDS.
PRIORITIES!

truth be told crackheads and drunks are only enthusiastic about their habits, and drug dealers/ mules don't drive conspicuous vehicles....

Last time I got pulled over the officer is analyzing me, asking me if I'm a risk taker.... like its a bad thing...
I responded by telling him , ya I'm an adrenaline junky and take risks, just like him
He got mad and asked me what i meant by that,
"well your job involves risk everyday, and obviously you enjoy adrenaline that comes with it!

They hired over 50 highway patrol security officers with pistols, and its just gotten stupid here lately....psyshological testing is not mandatory. Just a grudge and an ego.
They are self funded from the fines they dol out...... CASH GRAB, REVENUE
so they are handing out bogus tickets, COURTS ARE SO BACKED UP, I HAVE TO FIGHT MY TICKETS 12-18 MONTHS AFTER RECEIVING THEM!

Imagine what 50 officers in town , on the beat could do to clean up!
But there is no money in it, and that would generate an expense, rather than income.

sorry for the rant, I just think the justice system is so diluted, and money driven it sick.
there isn't any money to be made prosecuting murders, rapists, or child molesters I guess.

I highly respect officers, that have a personal moral commitment, trying to make difference, protecting our famillies, and attempting to clean up society...

as for the others.....a dirty cop is the worst criminal out there....

Not weird...

We are all aware of issues.
There are a few younger riders here that may learn something and survive.

Dubious- worded nice.

My blood boils.
I have RCMP and lawyers and Judges in the family.
They have made a difference.

But there are alot of bad ones out there...
They try to justify what they do day to day.

I sure as hell do Nick! I try to keep at the limit whenever I'm not purposefully speeding though, if that makes sense. I figure I want to save my license for the BIG tickets I'm inevitably going to get.

And hell yes, I would have ran in that situation, without a second thought. As long as I'm absolutely certain they didnt get my license plate # though! Any question at all and I'm pulled over, nice and polite like.

I used to be quite the hooligan, not only would I run from the police when they 'busted' me, I would purposefully make them chase me to try out my 'newest' escape routes. I only got caught once, the cop saw my dust trail when I turned off the road to my long driveway. And let me off! haha he believed me when I told him I didn't know he was behind me.

It's all about knowing the roads, knowing how to ride VERY well, and being smart about when and where to do it. haha almost forgot: don't forget to look up! angle a mirror all the way up or turn your head if you are limber enough, there very well could be a 'copter or spotter plane following you! If you have already committed to running, your only chance is either flat out on a deserted highway (there planes usually top out around 120mph, helos less than that), but I dont recommend that. Too much danger, and too easy for them to just radio ahead. Best bet is to head to a busy national or international airport. There planes cant cross the landing and takeoff paths without permission, and getting that permission is nearly impossible during a busy day when 747 are landing with hundreds onboard.

Not that I condone running from the police, that is. Just be smart about when and where, and minimize any dangers to the public. Racing through traffic is 'more harm than good' to both you and all other riders.

And the golden rule: if the cops still in sight of you after 30 seconds, pull over and take your ticket 'cuz you arent getting away.

Cops are human too and have the internet. (hint, hint)

Sticks I think you're missing the sarcasm in my posts. I've had so many tickets in my life it's insane. Hell I got my first on my temps at 16...lol. Got my license cut up by the judge at 17 and had to retake the test at 18 to get my license. Then at 18 I got a ticket for 115 in a 50 zone, and the number of tickets just kept piling up from there.. I haven't had a speeding ticket in 3 years now though, which is a record. I could have, but I just kept going and went left, right, right, left, right, left...etc and was gone and I was away within 30seconds.

But as I said before, I never go above the said posted speed limit.

Well fury .. I DOOO feel your pain .. I got my licence to drive in Oakville .. then off to Edmonton to have my first real vehicle .. a bike .. 650 Seca .. nice ride for then ..

Lost the ol licence every spring .. first ticket added to the last years pile and poof .. 30 days .. luckely .. the notice never got to me till the last few days .. ove burocracy eh ??

well .. those were fines .. taxes for being me .. and everything else .. just the way it was .. I was an evil speeder .. I knew it too ..

later in life I found a really cool trick to play on the cops .. tell the truth !! wow .. never seen so many tickets not get written .. and I'm turning 40 this next week .. and I have only lost the licence once since HS and it was last year or the year beore .. uh .. just got the 14 .. and the funny thing ?? most of my tickets are in my car .. never once for more than 20 over on the 14 .. no .. i won't touch wood .. I make my fate ..

as for running ?? it's true .. unless they are chasin YOU !! you aren't running .. your paranoid and testing your fear reactions .. maybe that is all good practice .. but your surely not yet running .. lets be real about that ..

as for Calgary cops ?? well trained ticket writers ... I have respect for the cops .. just not frifilous cash grabbing laws and the enforcement seems to get worse come the months end.. and I was TOLD it was end of the month and the "quota" by some young ones a few years back .. they put they're hands on their guns when they saw my reaction .. I was stunned and fuckin pissed .. how DARE you say that to me .. and then hand me a ticket .. lonely biker at 2am .. no kids .. no cars .. all hiding like criminals in wait for someone just rolling along .. like CRIMINALS they were hiding out .. in the dark ..

I was doing 68 in a 60 zone .. KPH people .. that's 2am and 4MPH over .. this is NOT justifiable homicide I was doin .. and all on the fastest bike in the world. . please .. do you know what I do in the daytime ??

so .. I stop .. they got my plate .. lots I get off for just telling the truth ..

here's a good one tho .. told my 19 y/o friend ... his buds in the "gang" all stunt and run .. he's new and wants to be a cop so he stops .. only one .. gets caught .. they actually asked him .. why you stop ?? this is a 19 y/o kid .. first bike .. very sporty zx-9.. slowest I could convince him to buy .. and they put it in his head that you SHOULD run .. we'll stop if you go over 200KPH .. nice .

so what's the message ?? fuck .. I dunno .. but truly .. man's law is not for ALL men ... and bikes really SHOULD have a different set of rules because they truly are different than anything else out there .. ever hear of a bike killing 6 people and the drunk biker walking away ??

Ontario-ario is draconian .. i'm ffended these laws get so out of hand and I don't remember having a say in how laws get made .. we are on the shit list for sure .. it's cars killing people .. Darwin uses bikes for one off's .. no sliding scale ..

but alberta is no better . fines are doublin last few years .. and these peace officers as Dubious mentioned .. never met one .. never want to .. but really .. badging rent-a-cops to stricly dole out tickets as they see fit ?? please .. Gearge orwell had it right .

Time for us all to move to Mexico my friends. If we all move into the same town, we could just buy our own cop and not worry about it! Even without our own cop, at least when you get pulled over there you can just get straight to what matters to them: Your money in your wallet gets into there wallet. Nice and simple, no BS about "making the roads safer".
