Shinko 009 or 003?
I ride on the street out in the countryside more than anything. My stock tires are almost toast at 900miles. That's nothing but being hamfisted. I don't ever do burnouts. So, I'm thinking, I need a cheap good tire, preferable with good grip. The 003 comes in soft and ultra soft which I think I should stay away from if I'm losing the stock tire at near 1000miles. I found the Shinko 009 Ravens that are highspeed rated just like the 003's, but are a harder longer lasting compound supposedly, but I don't know how the grip will be.
Any opinions or experience with these 2 tires? I know many of you have the 003's, but what about the 009's?
Thanks for any replies.

I personally have only used the 003 ultra and regular, and have gotten great life out of both and i drag race alot. A bunch of friends i ride with that dont race, use the ravens with good performance. For the price and for what your gonna do with it, i say the 009. The last shinko i had lasted about 3-3500k miles and that was racing every weekend.

I'm use to pilot powers on a 636 that lasted 3000miles....I know I shouldn't get those at all on the 14 since the stock rear tire is flat and is almost down to wear indicators at 900miles. I need a harder compound tire to withstand all the torque this monster has. The torque is eating tires like a freakin' maniac! I love this bike!

Dude, the sides of my stock tire was feathering last weekend. My buddy and his zx10 were ripping up the back countryside. We stopped at a gas station and were shocked we were getting it like that when we saw the feathered rubber on the sides. So I lean son. That's not the case, it's the center wearing out too quickly for me. Coming out of turns hard and pinning the throttle to the next turn eats the shit out of the center. I'm not liking having to replace street tires every 1200 or so miles, when they cost so much. I'm looking for a harder compound in the middle. The 009's are claiming the longest lasting tread life.

lower your tire pressure to about 35 psi.... will last much better than 41 psi, and will hook better too!
bt014- 1000 miles
strada- 3000 miles- slipery though
pilot powers 2ct- ~ 1600 miles

Is that low of PSI alright for highspeed blasts?

nick i know you lean but hard tires will reduce your corner speed significantly and you'll be dieing to burn them off and get back on real rubber

I've never used hard tires before Steve. Enlighten me please? I honestly have no experience with them. What will I experience?

I ran mine up to REAL 186 many times on the nos, and rode 6-700 mile days at 35 psi.
and I mean 700 mile days averaging over 120 mph.... including the twisties...
Thats what alot of the racers run, and they generate more heat than a street rider ever will.

Dubious is right about tire pressures, you only need to run higher pressures when carrying heavier loads like with a passenger or luggage. If you a leaner, you'll notice a big difference in corner grip and lean angle and your drive out of the corners will impress you. Bigger footprint means more power to the ground. On track days we run as low as 30 or 32 pounds cold and trust me high speed blasts aren't a problem! I wouldn't recommend pressure that low on the street though, you can't build enough heat. I still need to PM you my cell number to go riding.

My tuppence on tires:
Harder tires = less grip, particualy in the wet. But they do last longer.
Easy really, the softer the more 'bite'. I had a feel of some F1 (Schmacher stuff), tires a few years ago and they were like blu tack!
I agree with the lowering of the tire pressure, but you will find that it is only going to lower the apex profile once weight is applied.
Maybe there is a lower apex profile tire (designed for less 'lean boys')?
If so; you could stay soft rubber - but - and still have more rubber on the tarmac (which might offset the grip issue as in harder rubber same profile), if you know what i mean.
Otherwise the lowering of the pressure is a good overall answer,

the shinko 003 has a flatter profile and will put more rubber down for any given tire pressure.
In fact the profile of a new 003 is very similar to a bald bt-014 or pilot power after many runs drag racing... and that when the 003 is NEW!

I've noticed that in the pictures I saw online. I think I will stick to the usual Pilot Powers.
Steve, people in Ohio have turns son, it's nothing like Florida. You have no choice but to ride the turns here if you get out of town; at least in Southern Ohio, near where Bulldog and I are from.
