ZX-14 Gear Indicator problem
Anyone run into a issue like this: I have a 2007, bought new at the end of last year. I have put only 1200 miles on it.
I shift from 4 to 5th and the LED indicator shows 4th to 6th. Then it drops back to 5th. When I drop from 6th to 5th, the indicator registars, 6th to 4th. Then corrects itself to 5th. The bike still runs smooth, but this pisses me off, not that I can't figure out what gear I am in, but that it is so new.
Is this common?

Negative, just pulled it out the first nice day here and took off. It is in the shop now, of course under warranty. Not sure when I will get the bike back. There must be 10 waiting in this little Kawi shop.

most likely it's just to gear position switch, no biggie

My 07 is the same. Under heavy acceleration shifting, mine will register a 2 shift change as well, then return to correct gear. I will deal with this minor flaw as I am impressed with all features of the screen.

It happens.....due to the way the gear pos indicator works - it is calculated and not actually a direct sensor or switch.......so the ECU can make the dash do that wierd deal.
I've seen it many times.

thats funny, the wiring schematic clearly shows an indicator SWITCH and section 16-111 of the service manuel details inspection, diagnosis and replacement of said SWITCH

Thanks for insight. Not a big problem, but the first real test of my service guys. It will be interesting to see what they do to correct.

And you just proved that you don't know how that switch works
It is only PART of the equation and does not alone give the indication......which is calculated and not actually directly selected.
This bike is not like most bikes............and I've had this sombitch apart so many times in the 2 years......

ninja 14, i understand perfectly well how it works. when in nuetral the switch grds the n/ indicator bulb. in any other position it adds resistance to a voltage signal sent from the ecu. the ecu measures the voltage drop to determine the selected gear and then compares that to vehicle speed and rpm to verify that it is indead in that gear so that it selects the proper map, it then sends the selected gear info to the cluster via a can/bus line. the only possibilities for the failure are 1. a damaged can wire 2. a bad gear position switch. 3. faulty vehicle speed sensor 4. faulty ecu 5. faulty cluster. if the bike is stock, the wiring harness has not been tapped(speedohealer and such) and the battery connections are secure i would start diagnostics by checking the gear pos. switch because it is the only moving part therefor making it the most likely culprit. if i mis- understood your original post, sorry

The original "problem" that this thread is about is not a problem - just a quirk of the wierd system function - as well described above
Mine used to go 1/2/3/3/4/5 with the yellowbox due to my 16/43 gearing. It simply threw the math WAY off. If you have a setup like this and get this problem you will notice that in top gear (actual trans top gear of 6) that if you clutch at highway speeds and let the revs come down the indicator will jump up to 6 as long as road speed is up and revs down.
What a wierd way to setup a gear pos indicator......

I believe it was in May or June of 2006 a similar post appeared. I believe that someone who seemed to know (and I am going by my poor memory) said that as the tires wear down, this affects the feedback to the ECU which caused some incorrect fugures. I think that someone even said after they put on a new tire, they noticed the 'problem' went away. I have 5000 miles on mine and the 5th and 6th indicator change is slower now. I have the stock tire and it is worn. I will see if a new tire changes anything. I think that if you stay in the gear for a few seconds the readout corrects itself... but as you shift it is having problems figuring out the gear. This sounded like it had some merit as most people encounter the problem while shifting... and after they have ridden the bike for awhile. I have not heard of the 'problem' on a new one. How is your back tire rob 1 sub??

Tire wear does affect it - as does leaning the bike, but I doubt it would be much of a factor....very low % changes

Hey 3B's&3B's, and everyone posting.
I have the bike bake, and amazingly enough the shop couldn't find anything wrong with it. They said they charged the battery, checked the switch, and rode it for a total of an hour. I reluctantly took it and was happy to see that it was reading correctly at all different RPMS. Until I got to about mile 7 and it did the same thing over again. By the way the tire is good.
I realize no one wants to do warranty work, but I can't believe they wouldn't try to find the problem. You guys are doing more for me then my shop.
The question is, does this bother me enough to go back and get ti right, or do I want to ride?
I just think that if this is all the trouble my ZX is going to give me, I am one lucky rider.

Mine does little shift indicator things like that but I figure it is just a quirk of the bike. I can live with it just don't look at the indicator for a couple seconds. I'm not going to dwell on it or obsess or maybe I will just set my bike on fire teach them a lesson.

This sounds like a small prob but I think if the indicator was staying in the wrong gear it might potentially affect performance. The ecu counts on knowing what gear the bikes in to use the right fuel/timing mapping for that gear, and gets the same signal the indicator gets. I'm guessing it would be possible to lose a little performance by having the wrong mapping for the gear.....but then who knows?

I'm not sure how long it takes the ECU to spit out the numbers to the indicator after it receives the shift notice. The map may already be in place but the ECU hasn't given the info to the indicator. Either way its such a small time for this I can't imagine the performance being much effected. A little more fuel or timing can't make that much of a difference. Mostly its been noticed from fifth to sixth how often is that a factor also.

This is why I locked the ECU down......and dynoed in that gear.
I don't need an indicator so it didn't matter that it never changed
