CAM timing RULES of THUMB

I know there are 'rules of thumb' when it comes to cam timing...like for boost applications, n/a, and for torque vs hp.

Can someone please refreshen me on this topic?
Thanks.

Well, on a boosted bike, you don't want as much duration or overlap.
Many will advance the intake, and retard the exhaust cam timing to reduce overlap.

with boosted motors the pressurized intake charge actually assists the exhaust scavenging by pushing the exhaust out, if the overlap or exhaust duration is too long, you will blow some fresh charge right through and out the exhaust...

In addition to wasted fuel and poor mileage, I don't imagine backfires or flashing in the turbo is real good for it either...

This cam timing is also good for making more bottom end power, so additionally it will pick up bottom low boost power, and spool up faster

Thx Lyle, so I could also assume under boost situations, even the stock cam timing could use a change too?

Cam timing and lobe center line are two different things ... While you can change the Deg of your stock cams BUT you can not change the lobe center line .. Changing your cam timing will do little if anything ... If you want more power from a turbo you need to have a cam ground to fit the needs of your turbo ....

Lowering your cam timing will lower your power band ...105 105 to 101 101 will help bottom and mid range while killing top end rpms

Rasing your cam timing will kill lower and mid 105 105 to 108 108 will boost high rpm power

To see any power gain you will need to move the cam timing at least 3 Deg to see and difference in power on a dyno ...

Keep in mind that changing the stock cam timing will yeld little or no gain ...Best to keep it at the factory numbers ... If you want more power you will need cams that match your combo...

The only time you should set your cam timing on your stock cams is if you have milled the head or anything else that would have altered the factory set up ..

good info there Smokin...

unfortunately, nobody seems to make cams specific for the purpose, but I have been told by several tuners to advance the stock intake, and retard the stock exhaust.
I have asked 4-5 very big names out there about cams, and every time told to use stockers.

Stock cams / timing are best for boost. (IMHO)

In the past i've run 106 / 108 on motors with compression & carbs with great results,
and 108 / 110 on my drag bike with nitrous. Movining the powerband around like Lee
said for you type of application.

then a connie cam would be perfect ..they have both less duration and lift on both cams ..

105/105.... ?? guess bigger cc engine. My 1986 FJ1200 was 110/112 new . most of the FJ1200 we messed with had the cam's timed this way from factory.......... my 1983 CB1100F was 107 when we checked, it had like 5,000 miles on back then. Don't remember what Honda said it should be from factory.too long ago and too many newer bikes....still have the FJ1200 :-)
