Vortex rear sprocket longevity
I just purchased a black- hard-coated-Vortex sprocket...the service tech seemed concerned that it was too light to last. Should I be concerned?
Do you have any suggestions for quality sprockets if I need to replace this one in short-order? (Preferably black)

keep your chain adjusted and it should be fine. Loose chains or misaligned axles eat aluminum sprockets. I have put 2000 HARD miles on my vortex cat5 and it looks good.

In addition to silvers comment, cheap chains stretch and thats what eats sprokets!
I ran about 2000 miles on mne before parking the bike, has at least another 4000 in her, and all I use is wd-40 for lube!

I also run a hardened black, 44 tooth sprocket with a heavy duty chain. I have read that WD-40 works well for the heavy duty chains, what are the other alternatives besides chain lubricant that just flies off chain almost immediately? I know some use chain wax, but I believe that it is only used for O-ring chains.

you can use wax on any chain...
I hate the mess.
I'd rather replace my sprokets and chain every second or third year, than spend 30 minutes cleaning the goop off my bike every sunday....

You mentioned that you use WD-40, is that sufficient? I have talked to others who also use it, just concerned about longevity of the lube?

I would put 1000 km or 600 miles on in a day and only lube it once at the beginning or end....
no problems! LOL
only wd40!

I've used Vortex sprockets for years roadracing and they have held up great. When roadracing we tend to run the chain with a little more slack than a streetbike to make sure not to bind the suspension during cornering and braking. Even treating them like that they have held up extremely well. Proper alignment and adjustment is as important as lubrication. The WD-40 for chain lubrication IMO is a little more problematic due to the possiblity of the solvent base causing the o'rings to swell. I prefer a premium olefin based chain lube and the best I've found is Honda-lube. It doesn't sling off and holds up very well. Just a word of warning, the chain lube question is as hotly debated as what motor oil is best!

There's another fly in the oinment'' Most all arms alinment marks to adjust the chain are not accurate. If you check them with a swingarm tool you would be amazed how far off most are!! This obviously serverly shortens chain/spkt life. When using arm ext'' its even more important to atleast measure when adj' the chain. I use the arm tool on every chain adjustment... Bill.....
