Don't need it. A waste of money if you ask me. I never had a problem with over heating and I don't think many people have.

Unless you ride in stop and go traffic in 1st or 2nd gear most of the way in 100 degree heat, don't worry about an aftermarket fan.

I haven't had the chance to use any in my bike yet, but I run Engine Ice in my Banshee and in my car and they both run around 10 degrees cooler. My car used to run around 200 degrees, and now it stays around 190. If anyone knows about the fan, i've been wondering the same thing myself.

good for hot city driving, stop and go , where the bike is ridden too slow to get much air in the rad. It will bring down temps alot quicker. moves alot more air.

I think my zx10 fender mod did more for it, ALOT more air going into rad, and fan comes on alot less.

with both mods, my bike has rarely seen more than 3-4 bars, even in 110f weather.
and high temp alert has never come on.

I have to mention that losing the cats made a massive difference too.

I've had numerous problems with it running at the top bar on the temp gauge, even though it was only 80-95 degrees outside. It only had a problem at low speeds stop light to stop light stuff, or on the freeway in stop and go. Really pissed me off that my brand new (stock at the time) bike was nearly overheating from that. For some reason certain bikes seem to run very hot... And its not a gauge issue, either. Idled it and measured with a non contact thermometer gun and fans kicked on at 210, engine hit 230 at top bar indicated.

I got the Muzzy fan now, but its only 45-55 degrees so I dont know if it helped yet. But I did notice a definite improvement when I installed my two brothers slip-ons, and then gradually as it broke it. The week after I put on the exhaust (and hit 2500 miles) it stopped hitting the high bar on the gauge. Second one downs not alot better but still...

I just wish I could install a lower temp thermal switch to engage the fans sooner! Should be around 180 or 190, no reason why they kick on at over 200 degrees. I'll let you all know when it warms up into the mid 80's at least if it worked. Sometime in June... lol

to lower engine temps, listed in priority from my experience and results:

1) get rid of cats... huge improvement
2) zx10 fender, much more airflow fan hardly comes on
3) muzzy fan, when it does come on it brings temps down quicker

I also run engine ice.

and of course anyone running aftermarket exhaust needs to make sure they're a/f ratio is in check, via map. If its lean it will run hot no matter what.

I had an 03 R1 (with a digital temp gauge) and the fan kicked on at 214 degrees and turn off at about 205 degrees. I would assume that this is normal for pretty much all bikes. I think my 14 runs a touch hotter than the R1 based off the temp bars but I don't think the fan runs any more than on the R1.

I live in one of the hotter climates in the US (southern AZ) and I think the muzzy fan is a waste of money. The only way I would see my temp gauge rise higher than one bar above the middle would be if I stopped at one of the longer lights mid summer when its about 105 or so. Even then it would only rise one more bar and still not reach the top. As soon as I'm moving it will almost instantly drop to below the middle.

Some bikes run hot. My temp gauge is always at 5 bars in the city in traffic. Any improvement, even a small one would be welcome. I'm changing coolant before getting the bike out this year. I'll see if that helps.

Hmm. found the answer to my own question! Lots of choices that would work, I would recommend the one that just makes contact/is attached to the radiator hose. The probe thru the radiator works, but I've had them and found they always have issues over time, between the probe just going out and the connection going bad. Must be related to the wind blowing through the radiator constantly flapping the wire till it breaks all its strands.

Obviously the screw in type is the best, but good luck finding a hole to put that into on a bike.

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+115+%2D106362&D=%2D106362

Just run a power wire to the battery (when using the probe so it will run after shutoff until radiator cools) or to a switched source, or even better to a 2 input switch. Run a switched wire and a hot wire to it and if you want it to run after you shutdown (especially useful for drag racing) you can just flip it. Take that fan + wire and splice in the new thermal switch. easy!

almost every engine made today runs at 210 degrees. what would the advantage be in making it run cooler?

because 210 degrees is around the prime spot for an aluminum headed and/or blocked engine to make its most EPA efficient burn. you dont get the best power at that temp, but you do get the least emissions readings there. It's a very common hot rodding trick to drop it down to 180 for iron heads and 185-195 for aluminum. Trust me, that 15-20 degree drop in operating temp is very noticeable in power, and also in radiant heat put off by the engine and engine compartment.

if your bike has a 180 degree thermostat, it will run 180 degrees no matter what fan you have, even if you change to a water treatment, the additives make the temp rise slower and drop faster when past 180 degrees. make your hazard light switch a instant on fan switch, you can turn on the fan when you see traffic ahead or at a redlight at a push of a button.

agreed with the haz light switch IF the fans wont drain the battery when the bikes at idle. Would hate to have a dead battery after driving an hour in snarled traffic, ya know?

Keeping Cool...

Lawnplus:

I don't know where you a based, but I am in Florida and most everyone I know here with a 14 has seen significantly cooler running bikes once a pipe went on. I ran a Leo Vince 4-2-1 and Mobil One all through 2007 with no overheat issues in traffic, heat, humidity, whatever including alot of time in 90+ degree temps. Some of the guys here have also run Engine Ice so I guess it depends on your environment and whether you are a racer spending time in staging lanes, etc or a ton of city traffic. Good Luck.

Suspect mapping will help most of the overheating problem. After the turbo install haven't seen beyond the third bar even in one hour stop and go traffic. 2200 miles on install.

Thank you california for legal lane sharing lol. I plan on putting a manual switch on mine, and running engine Ice. Seems like a good idea since i'll be going through TX,NM,AZ and CA in mid June *yikes*. May end up having to ride at night. I guess we'll just have to see lol. The good news is that i've got a white bike so at least it'll be a little cooler in that sense.

I was riding this weekend in 30 degree weather here in Ohio and It wouldn't go above 1 bar when I was moving...lol.

On warmer days it does get 1 bar above halfway though.

I agree tuning can make a big difference.

The muzzy fan does pull more air than the stocker. But (and as Muzzy has told me) the 14 does not have cooling issues like other bikes. Jet Hotting the headers and pipes has had more effect on the overall engine heat.
.
So its and improvement not necessary. But I was ordering packing for the cans anyway so I went with the fan. (and painted it the color of the bike)

I'll be installing the fan this summer when the weather hits 100+. Not because it's needed but to keep the engine as cool as possible.

Muzzy fan does pull a significant amount of air over the stocker. I have one and was a snap to install, I had no clearance problems or need to trim the fan. Probably wasnt necessary, but also doesnt hurt to have the extra capacity. Cheap insurance if othing else but to make you feel better.

I also did this, and it made a world of difference. Although I am currently not running any fender at the moment. I was thinking about getting a secondary fan, but this might not be necessary.

I am running a Yoshimura system with Engine Ice and a Muzzy fan. haven't gone above 4 bars and rarely over 3 bars in 105 degree heat with stop and go.

My 2009 ZX-14 ran at one bar from max on gauge in stop and go trafic, any weather condition. I purchased a used stock cooling fan on ebay for $74, installed it and wired it to the stock fan. Increased fan fuse by 5amps.
Now it runs at one bar past half way point on gauge in any weather condition, including 106 degree weather.
And the whole thing looks stock.
