'08 250 Ninja....Proof little bikes can be hot too

Guys:

Just had to share a picture of my kid brother's new '08 250 Ninja in Kawasaki racing green. Just a sick little bike with alot of trick stuff for a 250.

Enjoy.

If only it were a 2-stroke. i know that the day of the 2-stroke in america is pretty much over, but i still love the sound, power, and weight of one.

I think they should market a 450 single using the mx motors...
you wouldn't miss 2 stroke power much any more with one of those!

I'd love to do some laps on the track with one. A friend has been debating purchasing one for track only. If he does he mentioned he'll add dual rotor front brakes and suspension mods

That bike's so light it'd be easy to drag elbows (in addition to knees) around the track, big fun!

250 Track bike...?

Steve:

You are on to something there. I won't actually get to ride the little scooter until the summer when I travel up to see him, but it has got me thinking that is may be more fun than a 600 to just slam around the twisty bits looking for max lean angles and fun on the track. May just have get one in '09.

Ride safe....

That's an awesome bike. I like the looks of it because everything about it is 'proportional' to it's size. Whereas Honda's lame attempt at the CBR125 is goofy looking. Not even it's tires are 'proportional' to the size of the bike...more like for a bicycle!!

Maybe i can talk my wife into learning to ride now lol. She keeps saying that she's not going to try unless i teach her on the 14 so i keep telling her that she's not ging to learn lol. She just got the hang of my banshee last time that we were in texas. It was SOOOOOO painful. I don't understand it, we've got a friend with an 03 cobra that has a 6 spd, and she has gone high 7's in the 8th in it... Yet she can't ride a bike or quad with a clutch? how does that even make sense lol.

Bawls get her a dual sport dirt bike and let her learn on that. Trust me, a couple months on that and she will have the skills down enough for a 250 Ninja.

Not that she couldnt learn on the Ninja, but you have to rev those things so high just to take off it aint funny. Combined with the riding position, its a recipe for her to get so frustrated she will give up. Or crash. On the streets is no place to learn the fundementals of riding a bike.

As far as that 250, you guys that ride it will be completely annoyed by its lack of power. Once you get past that, you will be amazed how easily it handles ANY corner, and being able to be at full lean on a low speed corner and still be 3/4 throttle at 10K rpms is a pretty awesome level of fun that you have to experience to believe!

Good luck sliding the elbow though. You will scrape pegs way before that because it isnt designed to lay over as far as you might think. It doesnt need to get as low as a 675 Daytona, though. Its extremely short wheel base means that even if you are at the same level of lean angle as a 600, you will be turning at alot higher degree than that 600. It's all in the math! Shorter wheel base equals tighter turns for a given degree of lean.

As an example of just how great those things handle bone stock (with DOT race tires), consider this: on my 1987 250 Ninja, I beat the reigning California Super Stock champion in 1988 on his race bike, on a coned off 1/4 mile course set up by a Porsche Club for there new driver training. I actually lapped him in 15 laps! He accused me of cheating and cutting the course, but his crew was there to back me up. They were laughing there ass's off about it too! Course was ALL turns and he never could open it up for more than a second.

He bought me dinner for that. heh heh

And if you are wondering, yes, that is why the 14 cant turn with a 600. Even with the good amount of lean you can get out of a 14, a 600 or newer 1000 can out turn it fairly easily. That extra couple inches in length really hurt it in cornering. Makes it alot of work trying to keep up with a smaller bike in the twisties.

re-learning to ride

I would rather her learn on a bike that's less easy to put in her face. I've had more than my fair share of dual sports and dirt bikes. If anything the fact that the ninja doesn't make any power until the upper RPM ranges is a good thing for a beginner. That being said, Who the hell takes a beginner on the streets to teach them how to ride? I'm thinking more along the lines of the Stadium parking lot lol. That being said, If she can take off on my banshee, she can take off on a 250 ninja. A 75hp 2-stroke quad isn't exactly ideal to learn on either but she did it. She can take off now... it's just a matter of her getting used to 2 wheels rather than 4. She's a woman and is not going to be thrilled by a dirtbike in the slightest. Getting her to learn on a nice looking bike would give her much more incentive. She likes the Buell Blast as well, so we'll see if she ends up with one in the next few months. I'm trying to talk her into it but we'll see.

Take the 250 over the Buell Blast any day! I put 35,000 extremely hard miles on my 250 Ninja, which is almost the exact engine still in the new 250, and never had one issue. Hell, even the valves where good at 20,000 miles. It was stolen at 35,000 miles though.

It was the first street bike I had ever ridden, too. My recollections (surprising still fresh in my mind after 20 years!) as compared to the dirt bikes I was intimately familiar with:

Silky smooth engine, heavier steering, and had never leaned forward like that. Wasnt as easy to control/turn as a dirt bike, but close enough. Silky smooth power delivery and throttle response. WOW those brakes are great! (lol first impressions, they werent that good but seemed that way to a noob). Where the fuck is the blinker?! Crap I never checked to see if the brake lights work, or adjust my mirrors! Shit, I still cant see behind me! Where's my rear view mirror?! WOW those cars sure look big when I'm not looking through a car windshield! An almost naked feeling, like a cop is going to pull me over and go "where's the rest of your car fella? you cant be driving around exposed like that!" lol

It just struck me then as how the first few miles I spent thinking and worrying about everything BUT how to actually ride. Blinkers, oil spots on the road, mirrors, etc. took up my entire attention. When I got it home, THEN it hit me that I had just ridden MY Ninja home and I couldnt describe what it rode like (besides smooth).

Starting over without any riding skills? Hell, who knows. I had to "unlearn" quite a bit to ride it properly, but the fundementals at least got me moving! Good luck!
