Like Smokin said thats going to be a heavy bike with shaft drive...........to be a big seller and competitive dragbike it needs at least 220-230 rearwheel horsepower and preferably chain drive............damn if it put out 230 horses i'd consider it as a second bike.

Mike, I know it sounds like BS, but there have been reports, supposedly leaked from Yamaha that this 1800cc engine has produced some unbelievable horsepower during testing, which lead to its detuning to 205hp. It'll be interesting to see all the stats & numbers on the new Max.

Quick, i wasnt calling it BS........i've actually been following news about the new VMAX for the last few years.......one of my buddies had a Vmax 15 years ago and we used to swap bikes for like a week at a time i really liked it............i'm just saying that to get my interest at least that pig would have to have at least 220-230 rearwheel horsepower.........if your saying it could easily and cheaply be upgraded to 230 or so then it would have my interest.

I had a new Vmax in 85 when they first came out and i loved that bike ...But the aftermarket parts were far and few .... and the cost of aftermarket parts were out of sight ...Sure maybe you will be able to get 225 RWHP out of it with some costly mods but only to get run over by a zx14 ....

Every bit of 600 pounds for sure ....It's not going to make much of a drag bike ....Can't change gears ( shaft drive ) , No aftermarket but for a pipe and p/c ......Oh you may be able to buy some bling for it but that's about all anyone will make ...
LOL, sounds like you had one like I did in 1985, mine sat for a few weeks because no one made a 15" rear tire for it, or an aftermarket exhaust.

wee
Yup just like my zx14 i got the first 1985 Vmax that hit the dealer floor ...Great bike for 1985 ..... I got that thing to run a 10.92 all stock , ok for 1985 but a new 600 would run over that bike today ..

That bike in 85 used for the runs was not showroom stock..........I've talked to Dale a few times and he will tell ya that it was "special." I've run what magazines have on my 05......low 11's.....but is shit for canyons - as expected. The new bike has an 1800cc V4 that ended up at 295 HP and was detuned many times to get it down to 210........and a 200 size tire. They have also given us polls on looks, performace .....etc to see what reactions they would get.

I've checked it out:

......I'm still waiting :-)

Hey Mike, All is good with you & I. I didn't think that you were calling it BS, I just knew that if I posted those reported high horsepower numbers that someone might have (understandably) called BS to them, cause they really do sound hard to believe. But for those who are familiar with how the Vmax made an impact on the bike world back when it was first released, it leaves reason to believe that Yamaha will be trying everything in their power to make a serious statement with the release of the remade Max. I myself love the ZX14 and will not jump ship, no matter how fast the other bikes end up being. This horsepower bike war is a lot like the muscle car wars of the early 70's... gotta love it!!!

I agree with you Smokin... heavy bikes don't go fast and this thing looks heavy. Power to weight ratio is where it's at!

wow, at least the 14 will handle, some of u are interested in more than straight lines. I think the 14 would kill it on the sales floor, the 14 is such an all around great bike.

No Steve, the 14 cannot kill anything from a sales perspective. Well, ok, maybe it could beat out a couple of POS scooters and maybe the Z1000... maybe. People just arent taking to it like they should. I don't know why, because like you said it is a great all around bike for the streets, for mild touring, and decent in the twisties, too. And of course shines in top speed and quarter mile. Name another bike that doesnt have the word "Fireblade" in it that can excel in that many arenas?

Kawi has just been horrible at getting that kind of info out there into the right hands. Oh well, at least I'm fairly unique when I go riding. There will never be more than one other 14 at any particular hangout or scenic area I end up at. Try saying that for a R1 or Gixxer 1k!

Hey Smokin, wasnt it a trip to launch a shaft drive bike like that old V Max i remember the frame would flex like crazy when you launched and the back end would rise on the gas and drop when you let off the gas.........you had to be real steady with the throttle and mindful of ground clearance when cornering and make sure you didnt chop the throttle mid corner.

The V-Max was the Beast back in the 80's. I love the look of the new one even more than the old one. As far as the shaft drive, this bike has a shaft instead of a chain because really it is meant to be a Hi performane cruiser type bike, not a crotch rocket (14/Busa). The shaft drive gives the bike a much smoother and quiter ride but you can convert the shaft over to chain drive, which will lighten the wgt of the bike quite a bit and give it more torque and HP. It will cost ya for the conversion kit and labor, though. If I was to get one of these, I'd want the chain as well with no wind screen.

I've been using a 170 rear a while.....biggest that will fit... and it tends to wheelie more :-)
.......but it is easy to light it up if you want. I dynoed mine and it only made 106/80 at the tire on a conservative dyno..........but it sure feels like more.

I was originally going to buy Mr. Max, but i found my 14 for cheap. i WILL own an original vmax though. I can still remember the first time I ever rode one. I was sore for 3 days afterwards because the seating position is straight up, and with the amount of acceleration that it has it really tweaks your Traps. The muscles in between my shoulderblades were killing me afterwards. "Given i was 15 the first time that i rode one".When i would say that i was buying a vmax, people would say "are you sure that you can handle a vmax" but i got my 14 and they are none the wiser on how fast it really is. There are two kinds of people who own vmax's. Type 1 is the drag racing muscle bike lover who likes to have the bike with the baddest reputation thus far on the streets. Type 2 is the yuppee rich guy that heard about one, bought it and lets it sit in his garage because he's afraid to ride it and will end up selling it. A 600 will run about a half second faster through the 1/4 with someone who can ride the piss out of it. Put them on an 1/8th mile track and the guy on the max will spank the guy on the 600's ass like the little squid that he is. You can't get a 600 out of the hole like you can a max. The vmax was never intended as a canyon carver, but it will out perform any other cruiser on the planet in the twisties with maybe the 2 exceptions being the Rocket 3 and the M109r. When all is said and done, the vmax will still hold the lore that it has carried around with it for the past 23 years. I just think that it's a shame that they stopped production on the original model. If the new max isn't the fastest accelerating bike on the planet, it will be a disgrace to the name and yamaha can throw in the towel on the arms race.

Sorry to rant, but that's just my $.02

The V-Max rocks. Always has, always will. Just a blunt instrument for accelerating and having fun in a straight line. Nothing more. :P
