That was Brock's pipe out of the box. No plug, if that's what you mean, as he didn't have a plug back then. I love his pipe for racing but my ears can't take it on trips around the city even with custom ear plugs. I got bad hearing from flying and playing in Bands in college. I have a Gen 3 for when I'm at home. Great sound and not hard on the ears. Love that one too--

By the way, your custom pipe is very good looking. Now if it can hold back sound?

Thanks Flyboy. I'm working on an idea to suppress the sound even more. But, first thing I wanted to do was to increase the exhaust flow and hopefully pickup a few more horsepower in the process, so I removed one of the screen baffles that I had mounted inside the stainless steel tip. I still have one of the screens mounted in the mid-pipe that's been drilled with larger holes for maximum flow, while still allowing some back pressure to the motor. I may have been a little too close to the stock back pressure by using two of the screens. I took the bike out today and I can't say for sure, but it definitely feels stronger at take off and all through the lower rpm range, it even seems to turn the rpm's up quicker too... more of a snappy, instant throttle response. Bad part, it did increase the sound a little more by doing this. But, I'm going to be working on installing a tubular style baffle that I can wrap with packing to suppress the additional sound without restricting flow... much like the small removable baffles in other pipes that I've seen. Doing so will also reduce the size of the exit hole on my exhaust from 2 1/4" to just under 2", but I don't think it'll make that much of a difference on power since I was able to increase the exhaust flow so much more. I guess that I'll be making another trip to the dyno to see if we have made any gains. I'd like to reach 180hp with these pipes, but realistically it'll probably be around 177hp tops, if I'm lucky. Oh well, it gives me something to strive for and it's a great stress reliever if nothing else.

Qwick, never give up. I believe Edison tried 125 lightbulbs until he found the formula that worked. I admire you.

Thanks for the kind words Flyboy. Now, if this last mod doesn't do it for me, then I believe it'll be time to break down and write a check to Mr. Davidson. Problem with that is, WHAT PIPE DO YA BUY? Smeg, Gen3, Alien or maybe we should wait for the new Short Meg? Decisions, Decisions, lol.

I don't know if this will help you but if you have no problem with your hearing I would go with the "coolest looking pipe". All of them (Muzzy and Brock et al) are all within 2-6 horsepower gain with less weight. Unless you are dragging your bike for money/prestige or going for a World speed record the 2-6 hp is immaterial. When you look at the fact that the stock blinkers on the side fairing stick out in the wind they can be 1 or 2 hp lost by not replacing them with smaller blinkers. Some bigger/heavier guys can not get their heads behind the wind screen which can be a lost of 2-10 hp. By not keeping your elbows into the side of your body when racing can mean another 2-5 hp. Changing your gearing can gain you more speed. By not using 0 weight oil might mean missing out on another 1-3 hp. When you pull up to a crowd of 50 fellow bikers... well the last thing they will be looking at is your custom exhaust and how many horsepower you might have. Just go for what you think "looks cool".

Sorry for my behaviour, just some fun...
anyway, if you end up deciding on one of Brocks pipes, get the smeg or alien, and use the quiet insert if necessary!
I know Kevin wants to let his inner "rebel yell " out, after conforming in the uniform all those years!
Let loose!

Hell after all those years being upstanding, you should get the smeg and rip the core out!
The do some fly-by's of the local constubulary detatchment, just to say hello!
I doubt they would do more than chuckle and shake their heads at you ! LOL

and tell the ol'e lady hers isn't supposed to be as fast as yours.... and to get over it! LOL

Kevin,
tell her I said so, and hello too! LOL!

she can give me shit next winter when we visit!

Lyle, Qwicker said hello. Also said to tell you that she'll hold off on giving you a hard time when you stop by on your trip... said something about giving you a spanking at the local drag strip instead, LOL. Ahh, pardon me? Did she just say what I thought she said? LOL

Lyle, You're gonna have to change your screen name to the "Comic Canadian", lol. You're in rare form... must be the subzero temperatures or maybe you're suffering from dementia, lol. You know, most people fall into a state of depression when they realize that their beloved ZX14 no longer inhabits their garage floor. Just look at what happened to poor old Steve Wiffle... he woke up one morning in horror when he found that Yamadog key in his pocket, lol. He ain't been the same since.

He 's got some damn tenacity over that new CBR1000RR!
don't let him near the pipe on one of those! He just might whip out his memeber, and start pumping the hole!

Just so you know, I'm OK as a visitor, very respectful around the ladies, and always take the time to feel out the atmosphere. I am socially responsible in public, at least till I put on my helmet, and fire up the bike! LOL

Back to the pipes, Quick they look great and again I admire your ingenuity and craftsmanship.

BTW, did you say you were going to offer them to the public?

Thanks Kawboy. I just got back from the shop, should have the dual tubular style baffles fabbed up soon and installed to see what they sound like. This should help suppress the sound a lot better since one of the screens has been removed. I was able to run the rpm up today and it seems like I need to increase fuel on the topside now, which makes sense... It now has a less restricted exhaust flow, noticable power increase down low but seems to have plateaued at higher rpm's. It should need more fuel up top, which should produce more power there too. The next dyno run should be very interesting.

But, as for making another set by hand, I doubt if I will. Now that doesn't mean that I won't have someone else reproduce them for me. (That has been addressed!) But, I really want to see the new dyno numbers from these mods first. If they incease another 4-6 horsepower, then I may just be "in business". I'll keep you updated.
