OIL, 0w20 (off topic) must ask the pros

Ok guys, I read that lots of you run like ZERO weight oil in your drag bikes for optimum power. I think Brock uses it too.

My question is how long does it last? Do you change every weekend?

I wanna use 0W20 in my sled (Yammy R1 motor basically) as opposed to 0W40.

Thanks

I've ran fully synthetic 0w10 in my ZX12R at Maxton several times. One week-end we made 21 passes, it's a one mile course.
It's one mile to the starting line, then the pass, one mile shutdown and one mile back to the pits. I never let the bike idle more than I have to.
The bike has almost 30,000 miles on it with no ill effects...............so far :-)

I tried Brocks 0wt oil and i had no problems ...It did make my motor a little louder over the 10W30 i had been using ...The 0wt oil did seem to run a little faster in the 1/4 mile but i didn't feel safe running it so i went back to my 10w30 wt....I think it's fine if all you do is run at the track but i would not use it full time on the street....I could be wrong but i would rather be safe than sorry ..Smokin..

LOL!!! Remember, this is for my snowmobile!! I run 0W40 Motul sled oil now.

I run at near 11000rpm for extended periods and 9000rpm cruising!! Extended means like 30 to 40 seconds and backing off to 9500 for a steady cruise!!! Yeah, run the piss out of it!!
All day long!! Every weekend!!

The sled holds like near 4 liters I think....I could live with dropping the oil reservoirs oil every other weekend and refilling....that's 4 days worth of abuse and about 2 liters or so.

I was running mobil one 15 50 but last year i changed to mobil one 10 30 .... I started with 15 50 because i run that in all my race cars and worked well for me but the 10 30 seems to work well in the zx14 ..

Today I emailed Joe Gibbs racing....Lake Speed replied :

Jonathon,

You should not use our oil in your application. Our oils are designed for racing only.

Thanks,
Lake

Smokin I quit using it when I got the email from Brock. and I have heard from other people those energy saving molecules are not good on our bikes. I figured I only used it cause brock recommended it so when he stopped recommending it I stopped running it

Heard some major issues with Motul 0-30 from actual experience. So it's back to the hunt for the safest oil. For right now I'll run Kawa 10-40 and monitor the oil results from Caterpillar.

with motor oils that list two different #'s (10w30) the first # describes the oil cold, the second at operating temperature. there is no difference between 0w30 and 10w30 at normal operating temps. anyone running 50wt, i would emagine your oil pump pressure regulator is getting one hell of a workout

My 73 Triumph is my test bed for oil. If it doesn't say motorcycle oil, my Barnett clutch plates stick together like glue. I've tried about everything, Mobil 1 makes the clutches stick. Also the different oils and my valve adjustment intervals help to determine which oil works the best. 15-50 Aero Shell works well for most of the wear items but clutch sticks.
What would take me 1000's of miles to monitor wear on the 14, I can see in a few hundred with the Triumph.

Motorcycle oils are just that motorcycle oils. Keep in mind that automobile oil just runs in the engine only. Wet sump motorcycle engines run the same oil in the motor, tranny and clutch areas. Motorcycle oils have different additives than auto oil, these include shifting additives for the tranny. Spectro test a motorcycle oil against and auto oil and you will see major differences in the areas that count., calcium, magnesium and boron, these are buffers to neutalize acids. Zinc, phosphorous and molybdenum, these are emergency lubricants. they are the last resort when your oil film breaks down under heat and pressure tp prevent metal to metal contact. Most auto oils nowadays are cutting back on the zinc and phosphorous because they are hard on catastrophic converters. they are also substituting molybdenum disulfide which lowers friction and improves gas mileage. That will cause problems with people like us with wet clutch setups. Oil is a very deep and technical subject. Wal-Mart is not the cure. What kind of blood would you want for your transfusion? Top quality or some cheap easily available substitute. Would you run the cheap oil in your Ferrari that goes 190 mph ? Probably not , because the car cost 250k. You have a motorcycle that runs that speed for 10k, what a deal ! Don't use this as an excuse to run cheap oil, treat the damn thing with top quality blood. Even expensive oil is cheap in the big scheme of things. Geeeeeeesh!! Sorry for the rant....this is a very touchy subject for me because I deal with oil every day and you wouldn't believe what I drain out of bikes people have 10k-100k in and then I have to school and scare the crap out of em to get them to understand.

Mobil one oil just because i get it at wally world doesn't make it cheap oil ... Having built and raced motors for 34 years i know mobil one works... I even run 2 QTs of mobil one oil in my automatic trans and that has extended the track life ..Infact it has trippled the life of my and others racing trannys .. I'm not talking some wimpy 400 hp cars , i talking 1000 to 1600 hp cars ..These engines and trannys see way more stress than a zx14 motor..We can debate is oil thing for 20 years and we will all still not agree ...So keep using what ever works for you as long as you are happy so i'm I ...

I am not directing at anyone Smokin and respect your knowledge and abilities. I was directing more towards people knowing what type of oils and the care regarding what the engine needs are. I use Mobil 1 racing full syn in all but a few Triumphs, in fact that is what they come out of the crate with and what Triumph recommends. I just stress using motorcycle specific oils in motorcycles. My apologies if I offended you or anyone else, it was not my intention.
