AMSOIL...clunk a dunk?
For my first oil change I used Castrol Actevo 10W-40. I think it is a mixed blend with synthetic active protection molecules, not sure if it is full synthetic, I don't think so, it was $5.95 qt. A little clunk into first(as everyone has talked about) but pretty smooth for the rest. When it came time to do the oil again and after reading all the other oil threads I wanted to try something else. Full synthetic, etc. etc., AMSOIL being the best. So at $10.00 qt. I bought $50 worth 10W-40. I did the first change around 5 or 6 hundred. I think I put the amsoil in around 5K, not sure. I have a over 8k now. Just seems that every sense I went to AMSOIL everything is clunk a dunk and I lost alot of the smoothnes I had from Castrol Actevo. First is clunk, upshifting is clunky, downshifting clunky. Is it because AMSOIL is more for performance or what? Has anyone else had these kind of experiences? I know another oil thread but I had to ask! Thanks

Yeah, mines got very clunky after I changed to full synthetic 10W-30 from non-synthetic 10W-40. Some guys notice the clunk, some swear there's doesnt clunk. I have a 'clunker' too I guess.

I use Casrtrol R4 and have since the first oil change. To be honest I think all of these are good oils and have little to do with the clunk. I think first, its a Kaw, you want butter smooth you got to go Suzy, but with that comes a cost. There is a reason Busa's eat output shafts. Second, chain adjustment, especially if you are stretched. Try this, back your bike up and stab the back brake, then put it in gear, chances are the clunk will be gone. I will tell you first hand, no need to worry. Back in the day if you road a zx you had your next second gear on your work bench ready to go, not the case anymore. I have 5k worth of street miles and 150 or so passes (many of them hot lapping), and I have had no problems whatsoever. Just the normal clutch wear that one would expect and I have to say even that has been minimal, I just put my third set in so I am averaging 75+ passes per pack. I look at the brightside with the clunk comes the certainty the bike is positively in gear. If you want you can also put the bike in gear then pull in the clutch and start it.

Ya I guess I got spoiled with my Suzuki's, especially my TLR, now THAT tranny is amazingly smooth, yet you knew you were in gear also!
On this subject, I've now had my bike get a gear crunching false neutral 3 times now when I downshift from 4th to 3rd and nail the gas. Happened at high rpms, too, and once left me facing oncoming traffic during a pass with the bike between gears! Had to slam it down, gears crunching horribly, into what turned out to be second just to get out of the way of the RV coming at me. Not exactly confidence inspiring. I always worry about it now, and just skip 3rd entirely when I am passing or really need to move out NOW.

Again, I doubt your tranny action has much to do with your oil. If you are constantly having these problems you may let someone else ride the bike that you trust. You may just need to be a bit more aggressive with the action or you may have a tranny problem. If it is the ladder you want to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Biddtd- Has that brand taken away that slight clunk going into 1st? I also noticed that the weight ration was differnent then Rotella 5w-40....Which one is the best for performance and engine longevity?? Anyone? I have to change my oil as well and want to put in the best!

they all clunk some going into first, but if you let the bike warm up properly, work the clutch in and out a couple times before leaving, it improves quite a bit. sometimes it slips right in sometimes you get a clunk, this bike has massive tranny gears compared to any others and it will clunk some going from neutral to first. that being said i do like the motul 300v 20w-50. some folks run thinner oils for the sheer performance aspect but i feel the added vicosity is a safety blanket and my bike runs plenty fast for me. added mileage is a factor for smoothness as wel i have around 5400 miles so far on the 14. also a quart of the motul full syn costs as much as a gallon of rotella, but my baby is worth it.
