Advantages/Disadvantages

I'm trying to understand the advantages and disadvantages of certain exhaust systems and need some help. Of course I want to improve performance and take advantage of the tremendous weight savings, but since I have no real intent to go to the drag strip on a regular basis there are some compromises that I can and should make. That being said here are my questions: First, what would be the reason to run a "megaphone" style exhaust like the M10, Brocks SMEG, or Alien Head vs. a more standard exhaust like Brocks gen 3 or similar type? Which of these types makes more power? Is one type more for mid-range street gains rather than peak numbers? I would assume that the megaphone exhausts would make more power than a standard type exhaust but is it really drastic (ie. 10-15hp diff or like 3 to 5hp)? If overall total increase of the AUC (area under the curve) across the board was the goal which one would be the way to go. I only ask this as I'm very taken with the appearance of the M10, SMEG and Alien Head. I'm not really that fond of an extremely loud exhaust as I do regularly ride my Harley's and they have very loud pipes and so my definition of loud may be different than someone elses. I really would like to move forward and get this done soon but it's hard to find dyno numbers from a similarly prepped bike with those systems. BTW my bike is a 2008 and maybe I should wait until systems for the 08 come out. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance and sorry for being so generally uninformed but this is my first zx14.

If you don't plan on running at the track muche and don't care about every last hp then don't worry about running a megaphone or alien head style exhaust as at most you talkin 3 to 5 hp difference. Was told on my 08 Busa difference between normal style can and alien head was 1 to 2 hp. Believe when I bought my megaphone for my 06 14 was told 3 to 4 hp difference. So i would say get what ever pipe you like the looks of better, but imo it's hard to beat Brocks maps and customer service. look into the gen 3 style from Brock. I have the alien head on my new Busa with the noise reducing plug and it's not bad on the street at all, then if you want remove the plug and make lots of noise! and on the dyno the megaphone and alien head pick up power across the board.

My 2 cents, Brocks Gen 3. I have the Gen 3 and the Street Megaphone. Currently I have the Gen 3 with the carbon can. It looks great and sounds even better. I use the SMEG when I race, but it is a bit louder than the Gen 3. I've read a lot and I honestly dont think there is a huge day to day advantage over any of the pipes made. With that said, I dealt with Brocks because his reputation and his genuine care for his customers. The guy is good, and so are those that work for him.

As far as the midrange on the Gen 3, I couldn't give you a solid answer, but it is strong all the way into redline.

Go with Brocks...I have the S-meg and could not be happier. It is a loud pipe, the Gen3 is a little more mellow at full throttle, with less of a difference around town...IMO. Brocks support is #1. Very helpfull and well tested maps...plug and play.

In your situation buy the pipe that appeals to you the most...Whether it be the looks, sound, performance, fit and finish, cost, customer service!!!

The pipes made today are not so generalized anymore due to the competition of racing!!!...If you race!!!...If you dont race then it really doesnt matter which pipe you buy, just figure out what you want from a pipe and buy from the manufacturer that offers that need!!!

tool man told you right, buy what you want, but if what you want is the best performance ,looks ,support, and quality go with brocks. any pipe you choose will work but brocks mapping support and support after the sale is priceless.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I'm now leaning toward Brocks SMEG. I really don't care for the pipe and can look. Muzzy's M10 is also nice. I understand that there's an M14 to come but admittedly probably don't have the patience to wait. I've seen numbers posted on it but have yet to see the actual pipe which means that it may be a ways from production. The one thing that I'm having an issue hearing about is whether or not many people are running the "flies out" with aftermarket exhaust on the 08's. I know that it's better than it was on the earlier models but I believe someone here stated that even the 08 will benefit from "flies out" (might have been FBA that said it, not sure). Anyone in the Tampa, FL area that races their ZX14? Would love to meet up with someone and get some tips on how best to drive this thing from someone that really know how to ride it hard. Thanks again and Happy New Year to all.

xzonefour, I've had both the Gen 3 and now the Smeg on my "06" 14. Rode with the Gen 3 for about 8 mths. Once I saw the Smeg, I fell in love with both the looks and sound. In addition to that, they both fit on the same head and mid pipes without any modification. Totally convenient. Between the two I like the Smeg better. It has a more unique look and sound than the Gen 3 and my bike did pick up 3 to 4 HP on the dyno with the Smeg. The Gen 3 is a very nice pipe too but it is another can pipe, appearance wise but it's a great performing and sounding pipe. I have no complaints about the Gen 3.

Brock's customer care and support is what sold me on Brock Performance all together and his passion to get the most HP and performance from any bike he's building for and him posting his results online in a very definitive, objective and thorough manner is very helpful for the customers. I admire Brock and his company for that and the way he does business.

My opinion and my advice to you is to go with Brock. Wether it's a Gen 3, Smeg or Alien head, you will benefit from either pipe but Brocks customer care is what will impress you, even more so than the performance of his exhaust. He won't just sell you a pipe and then send you on your way after he has your money like many of the other companies out there. He'll stand by his product. Also go with which pipe who's appearance you like best. When you're satisfied with the looks of something, that's normally the most important quality.
