ZX 14 Backfire

I am new to this forum so if this topic is an old one then sorry for not finding it.
The problem is with a newly developed backfire on my 2006 ZX-14. The bike has about 10K miles on it and has the following modifications. Dyno-Jet PCIII with Muzzy X10 map. Muzzy X 10 exhaust, TRE . No modifications to the air box or filter. Love the power and the sound but now I have a back fire when getting out of the throttle that I could more than live without.

You hose has come undone from the bottom of the airbox or has a leak, unless the pop started when you installed the exhaust then mapping will help but there will always be a slight pop (except on my bike I have no pop whatsoever) hope this helps

pops come from air getting in on decel, if it bothers you make sure you have your airbox plug in and tighten your connections on your injectors to the intake

The TRE006A (for flies out) throws the N map and gets rid of decel popping, a 10K resistor properly wired into the GPS G/R wire does the same thing.

No, no resistor needed...straight to ground instead, but you lose the GPS indicator in any case...

If the pop came with the installation of the pipe then there is really nothing you can do, Like I said mapping will help a little.

I've been running the M10 for a year or so now. The backfire is huge on decel.
Favourite pastimes
1. Find a tunnel (poorly lit), find 4500 - 5000rpm, find a mate with a good quality video camera and get him / her to ride behind.

Saftey caution
Make sure no - one over the age of 60 in tunnel whilst sending out massive blue flames

ps
Is the end cone on the M10 still hanging out????

I'd think that with a custom map, disabling the clean air system would take care of most all popping ????

Nope; a bit, but not a whole lot. Keeping idle below 900 makes a HUGE difference though. You still get the one big pop at 3800 or so on decel.

reward69,

Go to Kawi's website and bring up the parts diagram for the zx-14; select the Cylinder Head diagram; look at part number 92171 (clamp around throttle bodies); tighten the four screws.

I had the same problem with my Gen 3. Brock sent me a pick of the diagram. He's had several people with the same issue of those clamps not being tight enough from the factory. Mine will now only pop on hard decel, which Brock suggest to avoid.

Still in the dark as to what flies out means. Any light on that term?
So far I am hearing that there is no real fix for the large pop on decel. If it was a few loose fittings I would think I would have had this problem before the M 10 was installed. Has anyone had this pipe on a zx-14 and fixed the pop?
What if anthing is Muzzy saying about this issue? Or do I just need a tissue?

I would be interested in this info.

Shrek,

Did Muzzy's exhaust system come with a plug for the bottom of the airbox like Brock's system does? There is a hose that runs up through the bottom of the frame on the right side that gets cut and a plastic plug to stop that airflow from the bottom of the airbox.

I'm not sure the exact terminology on these items.

There is an abundance of info. on the flies out if you use the search functionality on this site including pictures and detailed instructions. Also go to Brocks Perfomance website and read:

not sure on the HP. What ever it is it is not enough.
Just to give you an idea my license plate reads " 2 SLW"
The bike is fast, probably too fast. Just want it to go a little faster from the start and pull my shoulders out of the sockets like it does when the gerbils are up and running. The mods I have listed are a step in the right direction. I guess one mans blue flame popping antics is another mans backfire.

What are the down sides of removing the flies? What are they there for? Why did I need them? Why don't I need them anymore?
If it makes the bike faster than that is what we are looking for or we would be ridding something else. What effect on smooth linear acceleration?
I am all about taking parts off if it improves the enjoyment of the machine.
The M 10 took big ugly chunks of unwanted metal off. Just replaced by the pesky little "pop".

Do a search on "flies out" here Shrek; many people have the exact same opinion of all the effects removing them have; all for the better -- they were put in to appeal to a wider group of riders, who couldn't handle the radical low end grunt of a Busa. Basically, that's thats the reason. KAW realized they fucked up on the demographics of the intended buyers of the bike -- that's why they are no longer as restrictive now and open way earlier, which will appease most riders now. Taking them out on the 08 still yields more punch down low, though not to the same extent as the previous model years. The net effect on an 08 with them removed, offers even more low end grunt than the 06-07.

no downside to removing the flies, unless you have a weak grip.the bike is going to pull hard. i suggest you ride the bike first to warm it up before fly removal, this seem s to make it go easier, you need a fresh #2 long philips screwdriver and a slow steady counter clockwise turn to remove the screws. as mentioned earlier don't open the throttle primaries during this procedure. yea they all pop and crackle on decel with a pipe open enough to hear it.

That poppin sound is Great! I'm told from those who ride behind me that there are blue flames that comes out of the pipe while it is poppin. Great, cause blue is my favorite color. If my bike ain't poppin that means it ain't running right! LOL!
