I'm with Dubious, I'd never go that route. These bikes aren't made for out of true wheels; they need all the edge on stability they can get, starting with the wheels. Good luck!

I did -- and fully I concur with both you and Lyle. When I got my Road Queen in 99, I sold the lace wheels off the bike before it was even prepped, but looks are subjective and I don't like the look of lace wheels, or see them as practical from a maintenance point of view either, so I chose solid chromed wheels when I bought it.
On the ZX14, I see them as nothing more than bling and dangerous for my style of riding. I don't know anyone who won't whack the throttle hard on the 14 - and that's where I'd worry. I guess for 60 MPH cruising in the Sonic lots, they'd be just fine...but I my speedo doesn't go down that low, except maybe in the gear below 1st...

i don't know how they'd do in the twisties but i see old school KZ's runnin in the 5's with spoke wheels and slicks season after season. so they cant be that unsafe can they?

madkaw are you referring to the thick factory original spokes that came on the KZs, or the shiny little blinged aftermarket wheels of today that are commonly known to be unsafe?

maybe so. if thats what guys are using when they relace them with wider wheels. i was just (ass)uming that you guys were talkin about all spoke wheels. i dont know about that radial lace pattern as far as strength goes but those wheels in the pic have some HUGE heavy lookin spokes! but they do look kinda nice though.
thats all i was wondering. i don't know much about the newer spokes other than what i see at the track.

in any case they will need to be retorqued and trued initially, no matter how you ride, then trued and maintained thereafter....
I rather be ridin than truin wheels, or cleaning spokes, or worryin about warped wheels from loose spokes...
Once they set in and are trued from the initial stretch, they may be good for a while, but eventually all spoked wheels need maintenance.
Definately another item to add to the maintenence list...

You all are forgetting one very big thing: She is a cute female working at a bike dealership. Do you REALLY think SHE will be trueing up those spokes? lol a bit of sweat talking and batting of eyelashes and the mechanics will become her mechanics Not that I'm saying she couldnt do it herself (well, kinda I am - hell I cant even properly true up spoked rims and I've got alot of hours trying) but if I could get someone to work on my bike with a shake of my rump and batting of the eyes at them I would!
Last time I tried the guy didnt stop running for 15 blocks...

put his back out? Im sure it was something else he was scared of! lol Gotta admit I would make the most hideously ugly monstrosity of a woman you ever did see. My wife once talked me into dressing as a hooker one time for a Halloween party and after spending 2 hours "prepping" me she took it all off in frustration. It didnt help that my 4 yr old daughter saw me and ran screaming from the room absolutely terrified of me! lol

"i have some very nice mechanics that take good care of me here"
USED to work there...after taking apart those spokes, cleaning them for hours on end, and trueing them on a regular basis....they may go work down the road and do something more mechanically inclined :P
