Bike making extra HP in mountains
Can someone help me, I want my ZX14 to run in FL like it does in the mountains. I'm not sure if it was the colder air or the high elevation, but my bike has NEVER EVER came close to performing like it did as soon as I took it off the trailer in Gatlinburg.
Could the map be more adjusted to the altitude and I can get a custom dyno map for FL?
I can't stress how much better the bike ran regarding raw HP and pull, and I'm not exagerating. It was an entirely different bike.
Any input will be appreciated. I'm still hanging out in NC and will be riding low in Hickory and high in Wilkesboro and Mt Airy (the real Mayberry) and I'll see if its elevation differences.
I know this, the bike doesn't run in FL even close to as well as it runs up here.

If it was better then you must be running lean............ it got better when there was less air and it fattened up. You shoulda melted a piston or 2 by now if it's that lean though......prob was the temps.

Maybe the temps. I wasn't expecting such a profound drastic change. If anything I thought the bike was running slightly rich in FL, it has a Brocks map for flies-out
Thanks fella's for the replies

Just got back from Mount Airy, passing the Flag on to ZXGRIFF. Weather was perfect for bikes. Not too hot, not to cool. It was 65 degrees. Bikes will always run better in cooler air. My bike makes 10HP more in Nov/Dec then it does in July/Aug, that's why it's always best to map your bike twice a year. Once for the cooler air then again for the hot humid air. Mapping will make the difference when it's done according to the air. In Florida, the seasonal changes is not as drastic or noticeable as it is here in NC, so you won't notice the difference as much there, where is always warm. Sometimes you really have to custom map a bike to the air/temp instead of just using, say a Maxton map or track map.

The inlet temp sensor should compensate. Any good dyno operator should end up w/ about the same map both times.

I have followed performance with a data acqusition unit at sea level - 1500 and 4,000 feet(Bonneville) and it stays within .2% - to me the fuel injection is incredible on this bike. Standard map is faster than the 200 map - in my bike at least..... doing land speed - they are identical at mid range and low rpm as I recall.

Cooler Air...More Power..
Stevewfl:
Totally jealous that you are riding in NC. That said, I think you will be happier as it cools off here. I went out early on Sunday AM (62 degrees) and immediately noticed the improved response on my bike and I still have "flys". Cooler is better. It 'swhy I like Florida best between November and February. Ride that thing in like 45-50 degree temps and it will be insane fun. Not sold....yet.

Everytime they hold the Drags here in Ont Canada they break records... The elevationis a factor. I met John Force in London Ont. Got a shirt signed. Nice guy!

i,ve noticed a considerable increase in power with the cooler temps. will power wheelie @wot in first at any rpm without slamming the throttle closed first in temps below 60

Exact same thing here.
Over the last month I noticed this. First I leaned the map a little bit in some areas. Then I leaned the map in the LOW and MID via the PC buttons, -1 bar which is 2% I think.
This is how I will start out in the spring. Then as it wams up outside I may lean out even more MID, perhaps one more bar.
When you go backward (lose power) on the PC, you will feel it.
