couple things: road race tires and drag tires both are designed to "grow" as the rpms of the tire increase. This growth can be quite large and help in the gearing department. However, a soft compound also absorbs a significant amount of power, especially at higher speeds. So you will find it to be a "slower" tire unless you have the power to overcome this and utilize those tires "growth" at high speeds.
Do not forget, You are creating alot of heat at those high speeds and if your tire is under-inflated AT ALL you are going to either find the tire shredding or you'll 'cook' the oils out of it, hardening it for good. The closer to a full race tire you get, the better able to handle and dissipate the heat it gets. Compromise with a Pilot Power IMO.
BTW: you guys mention running specific speeds, I must assume you are using GPS to measure it??? what unit are you guys using, and how did you mount it? I plan on having a camera running for my runs, and want it to see the GPS and road, gauges are a +. Any ideas?

Sticks,
I don't entirely agree with what you say. It was true that tires grew with rpm some years ago but modern construction has almost entirely overcome that. I'm talking standard road rubber, not specialist drag racing products. The speed at our meetings is measured through two beams a set distance apart and is accurate to one tenth of a mph, these are professionally run meetings on an airfield runway. I remember a few years ago a guy from Avon in the UK explaining that when they say their product is safe to a certain speed with a given loading, that means they run it on a test rig for 24 hours and if it fails it's back to the drawing board. The margins for safety are considerable but we are pushing the envelope at 200mph plus so we have to use the best product we can buy and not take chances. Safe riding.

I'd love to do the Texas mile but it's a bit of a journey from England. One day maybe.....

I JUST read an article where they tested a bunch of tires and mentioned it. As a matter of fact, they were unable to fully test the Dunlop 208GP's because over 100mph they rubbed on the swingarm! The article clearly states that all tires do it, race tires just more so. common sense, really. question is how much? On the 208GP's the answer at 100mph is over 4mm, which is the gap it had at rest. Here is the SuperBike Magazine article:

MR turbo. did the run on a highway here on a sunday morning at seven aƧlock in the morning.... my front sprocket was 17, standard.. You wrote about about the zx11 mr turbo, I did read that ten years ago, and you are right about those numbers, I think it was in performance bikes. it was a blue white zx11... it was water injected cooled, and they blew the engine in those testruns.

I think it was in cycle world they had that monster Mr. Turbo ZX-11 featured. Bike made well over 400rwhp making a dodge viper look funny in terms of power. Top speed was 234mph and would have been higher since the bike was still pulling. But the front tire was dancing so much they didn't push it any furthur. It was some yearly thing cycle world did for awhile called "UFO" where they'd have atleast 4 different built bikes just for the purpose of seeing how insanely fast they could go in the straight line. Last year they had it i think Mr. turbo showed up with a blackbird but the motor caved in before any top end runs could be done. However i don't think the zx-11's 234mph speed was ever surpassed in these events, which ended after only a few years.

Ryu,

the bike made like 494hp over 10 years ago, talk about being ahead of its time. some builders would give a left nut to have anywhere near that now. i can tell you first hand Mr. Turbo is the man. The zx14 bike we are building is well up into the 400's hp and 230+ lbs of torque and that is only at 20lbs of boost. we have 30 to 35 lbs potential. runs perfect and is very streetable. not to mention fully chromed out top to bottom , all plastics etc chromed by XXX Chrome Plating, WI . the bike should be fully completed by the last prostar in FL in nov. but i am hoping to run it at the Texas Mile with member TG.

Hey fellas, how about some onboard video of the runs??? Probably has to be onboard, I would imagine any outside camera would just show one helluva fast blur of reflected light off all that chrome going by at 200+!

Thanks for the link, an interesting article. They do say, as you point out, that race tires grow more centrifugally than road and the D208GP they had problems with is not a road tire. The zero degree steel belted technology, such as that used by Pirelli and Metzeler, is to prevent growth. Take the Metzeler Dragtec for example. I'd like to get some definitive data for the BT014, maybe I'll use a laser level to measure it next time my bikes on the dyno.

After a few days of research into tires, I think i am going with the pilot race med compound. that is what a few world record holders are using, and i can argue with that.

also does anyone know of the biggest front sprocket availble and the smallest rear?

thanks

I have 18x38 - vortex i believe - I use Battleax with race/street compound - hich has worked well.... jody and trillian are using the same and are pleased on their turbo set-up Busa at maxton.

With his setup he's gonna have to run 18/38, or 40 gearing. 17t is really too small for a high horsepower turbo bike. You don't want the chain getting damaged, and you need the lower gearing to launch and race the bike, and it also raises the chain up off the swingarm.

I'll be going to an 18tooth front when I get around to ordering one.

Update on gearing

we have decided to have some custom gears made for it. (19 and 20 front) and somewhere between (30 and 38 rear) Mr. Turbo is working some gear charts right now based off of everything from tire dia. to crank speed, engine speed. and about 10 other variables, he has it down to how many inchs per rpm !!! he is way over my head with that stuff. but i will trust him he has been 260+mph on the budwiser busa he built for Ron Yancy. we really want to run some top end speed, then it is off to run prostar in Nov. to run super street. thanks for your input

Here this will help you, I'm sure Terry has it all worked out with his own formula.
But you can play with gearing tire sizes, RPM's, it helped me out alot.

Stage XXX get your facts straight. Rich Yancy built his Bud bike. He used a Mr Turbo kit but modified it so extensively that it is really a Yancy kit. Terry Kizer went 239 MPH on it at Texas while Rich (6' 8" tall) went 245 and Scott Guthrie (age 60) went 251 that same weekend. The bike has run 260 at Maxton, N.C. with Lee Shierts riding, A real accomplishment.
200 is pre-school in LSR. The stock tire is more than adequate. The best tire made for LSR is the Michelin Pilot Sport HPX. It might be too hard for short acceleration tracks so try something like a BT002 or equivalent. LSL

Larry,

All i am tring to convey is that he had been there, part of projects that have set lots of records. you dont become a 9 time national champ for nothing. he knows his stuff. As far as tires go, I have heard nothing but good things about those pilots and that is more then likly what i will get. Larry - what kind of bike to you run and how fast have you been. are you coing to Texas?

xxx I am retired as a rider (but not before joining the Bonneville 200 club with a stock exhaust Busa in 2000). My team runs at Maxton (We set a new Production record today at 206.9 mph) and Bonneville next week. The bike in the avatar has been 220 on motor. The other is a custom framed turbo which was the first Japanese powered bike to go 250 at Bonneville in 2003.
I have all the respect in the world for Terry Kizer, his accomplishments speak for themselves. LSL

Just call them in the AM ...I'm sure they can cancel it .... But check first to see if my 2005 ZRX1200 sprocket is the same ...I'm 99% sure that it is but better check anyway..
