Clunky Trans

Good Evening Gents,

I have a new ZX14 that I picked up two weeks ago it currently has 550km on it (About 300mhs).

I have noticed one small problem so far, the gears on it seam to be rather clunky (it rattles going into first and occasionally jumps into neutral when I am trying to get it into 2nd).

All in all I love the bike and think it is a great improvement on my 2002 ZX12R or on the Busa. But am wondering if this is something I should be worried about and get checked or if it is just because it is new and needs some breaking in (it has been 5 years since I broke in my last new bike and I relay don't know if I experienced this before.

welcome aboard. the 14 has some huge gears in the tranny and when the bike is new with the thin break in oil, it will clunk going into first. it will improve greatly with the first oil change and continue to get better. there is nothing wrong just get er to 600 and change the oil. i am still running conventional motul at 3600. changed oil at 625, then 2400 miles. i will change to synthetic very soon. the bike gets smoother and faster all the time. congrats on a great choice.

check your chain make sure it is not too lose. it reduces the clunk going to first gear if the chain adjusted properly.
welcome aboard.

one of the strong points about this 14 bike compared to the busa's I ride is the tranny is smooth as butter

Trust me get some miles on it and fresh oil, and it does nothing but get better. I thought the same thing, but then i rode an 07 busa, and it was worse. And the going into nuetral thing, thats just you not pulling up enough to go to second, it happens to everybody.

Same here... get some miles and a couple of oil changes and it is awesome... Several things... before shifting into first... pull the clutch about 10 times.. and make sure that the bike idle is down under 1000. Some of the problem noted on this site was the RPM setting also. Lastly.. I am not a pro.. and I don't race at all, but I have never hit a false 2nd gear on the 14. You may want to check on the shift lever and move it down one setting. Sometimes that will help... maybe your foot isn't as flexible as it once was... Although I have not ridden an 07 and don't know if there were any changes that might account for the second gear problem that you mention. Wait until you get 4000 miles on it... it just gets smoother and faster. (Welcome aboard!!)

Under hard acceleration, many do not release the shifter fully. This causes the ratchet in the shift drum assembly to NOT engage the next shift dog, Hence missed shift.

Try leaning forward more to counter the G force...

Thanks for all the good advice,

Much to my wife's displeasure I am going to take it out for a run this evening and see if I can put a few more miles on it. After all it is "maintenance" just like doing the dishes...
