Air shifter questions

I lost a race Wednesday because my air shifter wouldn't shift. It only does it occasionally. Is it normal for them to not do the 1-2 shift sometimes? I already have the kill time set fairly high. It's an MPS kill.

Also, is there a valve or something you can install so the air doesn't keep coming out if you hold the button too long. I think sometimes I don't push the horn button long enough, because I'm afraid I'll use too much air. Maybe that causes the missed shifts? I'm new to air shifters.

How much air pressure are placing in your bottle?
I place 120psi in mine to ensure there's enough air for all shifts.
Usually when mines hesitates it because I didn't firmly push the button.

This missed shifts could be because of a slight bind with the ram air cylinder.
Check it and make sure it has some play in it and doesn't bind during upshifts.

Also, you could check your lines make sure there's no leaks

How long is the line from the air valve to the ram? Mine is about 4-5 inches and it set almost all the way where you feel no pause at all when shifting.

I run the air up to 130 psi. The ram appears to move freely. I still ride on the street and I can't tell it's there when foot shifting. I've pumped up the system and let it sit. It holds the pressure.

I mounted the air valve on the frame just above the sprocket cover, so the line to the ram is about 5-6 inches.

If you shift and continue to hold the button, the air just keeps coming out at the valve until you let off the button. Is this normal?

Yep that is normal. Is it not activating or just missing the shift after it tries to shift?
If it is the former, the horn button isn't the best button in the world, I've had poor contact issues before.
Also 1-2 shift is the longest throw, maybe check that it doesn't run out of ram throw on that shift?
You really shouldn't worry about running out of air if you are using 130psi, most guys still have 80psi left after a run.

on that particular pass, it went into neutral instead of second and I had to hit it twice to get third. made three other passes that night and it worked flawlessly. I think I may not be hitting the button long enough.

If your spinning a little it can also cause a missed shift.

I mounted mine right to the cylinder with a 90 degree fitting.....it shifts sooo much faster this way. You will also have to turn your kill time down alittle.

I'm bringing this one back because I'm still having problems. Tonight it wouldn't go into third at all. I made 2 passes back to back and it wouldn't shift at all into third. It just bounced off the limiter as I repeatedly hit the button. Went from 1-2 fine. Upped the kill time more I'm probably around 85-90 ms, which alot of people say I should be able to go less. The next three passes it did the same thing. The last pass it shifted 1-2 fine, then when I hit the button it went into neutral, it wasn't a false neutral, the green neutral light came on. It only seems to be third, no other gear is giving me problems. I'm worried I may have transmission problems, but I'm going to try to eliminate some easier things to check first.

Can the ram go bad, or wear out? I bought it used. Also, I'm wondering if it could just be dry in there.

Also, I've heard this could be a sign the clutch is going.

If anyone has any idea what would cause this, or has any ideas what to check, please let me know.

Mark two things an air shifter will not do ....(1) it will not shift if it's on the rev limiter ...(2) It will not shift if the tire is spinning ..

You can add some WD40 to your air tank to lube the ram ...Make sure your ram is not binding on the mounting points....Make sure you are not just thumbing the button, you have to really press it ....Hope this helps ... Smokin..

Mark your clutch maybe slipping mine has done this same thing on a bad (slipping) clutch.

Also you can spray wd40 directly into the top hole of the ram just to reduce friction inside.

+1 on firmly pressing the button (I make that mistake often)

mine only does that when it's low on air.....it hits the 1-2 fine then it doesnt have enough pressure to kick it into 3rd.......happened on more than one occasion.... I run mine at 150psi....if its low on air, by the time i hit 3rd it's only got about 30-40 psi in it. I take mine up and down the pits to see if everything woorks before i race.

i just thought about this and I may have been hitting the rev limiter, when i put my extensions on, i went from stock gearing to -1/+3. i know thats a huge difference and everything happens so much faster now. maybe i should set my shift light lower to make up for my reaction to it.

thanks for all the advice

also, i have the factory shift light set at 11000. does anyone know the difference between the actual rpm and indicated?

6% error on the tach, so 11,500 actually is 10,800....
