I definitely agree on the synthetic oil I also have a M109 and it runs significantly better with the synthetic oil even got rid of the shift clunk at that point, I really like the idea of the second fan though on the 14 will make a decision soon thanks for the info

No question about it; new bikes will run much hotter, especially with the break in oil.

Never had a problem with heat where I am. Came from a rally when it was still new last year +- 38 degrees celsius and it was running 1 bar and occasional 2 bars above when in slow traffic but went down soon after higher speeds. We also have a harsh summer her in South Africa.
I wonder if the break in period isn't more important than what most of us think? I was not to careful with the break in, did not rev it to high but ran it normally. More the way that Brock suggests. Can't complain either about the performance of my bike. Don't want more at this stage.

funny all these first time posters have the problems, can you say troll

No definitely not a troll here....lurker perhaps.

I am (just) beyond the break in period at 1200 miles. I have switched over to full synth Mobile 1 motorcycle oil 10w-40. The bike runs very cool at higher speeds (freeway, 70-80mph). However, the problem I have had and continue to have, is at speeds under 40 miles an hour. The bikes temp climbs rapidly and if I idle for more than a minute or so (after the bike is warmed up) I have to turn the bike off or risk overheating. That is not cool (pun intended).

I have been riding motorcycles for over 24 years and have two other sport bikes in the garage. Neither of the other bikes has this heating issue. I would think there is something defective with the bike save for the fact that so many other people on forums have indicated similar difficulties. Per Fish Antlers post, Kawasaki's has acknowledged they are aware of the heat issue. Kawasaki has chosen not to address it.

My ZX-14 is absolutely bone stock. It should not have a heat problem.

Having said that, except for the heat problem, the bike is a monster. Twist the throttle and it is like getting shot out of a gun =).

Edited to add:

No mass produced motorcycle should require the purchasing of after market parts for it to work correctly. I am resigned to putting on an after market exhaust system and switching to water wetter....I just don't think I should have to.

Wait it out -- the heat issue will become less apparent over time -- and do the water wetter / distilled water thing; it helps big time. I don't know that Kawasaki is "aware" of the heat issues. These big bores high output motors do generate a lot of heat. Changing to a non stock can also makes a huge difference.

Am crossing my fingers it does improve over time ;-)

Yep, got the high temp message and the temp gauge was flashing = immediate shutdown (intentional on my part to avoid damage). I know how to avoid it now but that means I can't ride during certain parts of the day due to temps and traffic.

By now it probably seems like I don't like the bike much, but honestly it is really a fantastic machine (except for the one damn niggle). I have never felt such incredible acceleration on anything.....ever.

And I personally love the way it looks....even the Testarosa esque/George Foreman grills.

For the longest time I was looking at getting a Busa but just could not stand the looks of it. Suzuki has a penchant for making bikes with faces only a mother or owner could love. Though there is no doubt about Suzuki's ability to engineer super fast and capable machines.

I think the thing that impressed me the most about the performance of the 14 is after I got it broken in and took it out on the freeway. I was going about 80 MPH and twisted the throttle....hard....I believe my exact words were....."Oh my Fu&%ing GOD!!!!"

I could not stop smiling.

You think she's quick now? Wait till you remove the flies -- talk about a night and day difference, holy fuck!

If you want to know what it feels like, try this --

1) Walk your bike out to the street without starting it. Make absolutely sure the engine is cold, like not started for 5-7 hours.

2) Start the bike, immediately jump on it with no warm up at all and hit the throttle hard at 3K and watch what happens -- but be prepared and hang on tight...you'll freak!

ranast--what do you have your idle set at? I turned mine down just a bit and it helped in the stop and go traffic. I think it keeps me just under the top bar. I have not had a problem with heat, but cooler is better. The exhaust holds a lot of heat in, as does the engine until you get a few miles on it. Mobil 1 and watter wetter here in hot-as-fook west texas.

I'll double check tomorrow when I go for a ride but, off the top of my head I think about 1100 warmed up.
