First post zx-14 heat issues

Hello,

First post and a question.

I am just past the break in period on my 14 and am not too happy about the (well documented) heat issues. Stop and go traffic is a no no on my bike. I have heard that the cats retain a lot of engine heat and that by switching to after market pipes you can help alleviate some of the heat issues.

Will moving to slipons get rid of the cats? and yes I know going to a full system will give me more HP but honestly....I am pretty happy with the pathetic power output of the 14 =P.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Welcome to the forums!

Yes. The Cat's are in the forward part of the mufflers and run extremely hot as all cats are designed to do.
A set of slip ons will get rid of the cats and should help with cooling. A Power Commander and a good map is a must. After about 1500 miles switch to a good full synthetic oil. Mine runs very hot as well. As soon as I can put away some $$ I will be ditching the stock exhaust.

Thanks Faster.

Makes my decision tougher though hehe. Was trying to decide if I was going full system or slipons.

If slipons would not have gotten rid of the cats it was a no brainer.

Heat is really the only flaw in the 14 ointment.

Edit to add:

I like slipons because the look (dual exhaust) and ease of instillation. Full system because Brock has ceramic coated headers which should also really help with heat (next to the radiator).

Hmmmm....decisions decisions........

FBA,

Did you have an opportunity to evaluate your heat issues with just your pipe and PC prior to moving to redline and distilled water? Were you experiencing heating issues even after the exhaust swap and then moved to your alternate coolant mix?

You can always try the distilled water and water wetter first and see if that does the trick. It will help but the restrictive exhaust and the cats are really retaining the heat. If you go with slip-ons with stainless or Ti cans then you can use exhaust wrap on the headers, It's a pain to do right though. You have to remove the headers and at that point you might as well be installing a full system.

With the original exhaust, there was a much greater heat issue. Everything I did was done in stages starting with the Brick Hindle/ full GEN3 exhaust and PC3, which made a big difference. The next and last thing was the Redline/Distilled mix. Also, I run Amzoil race, which I have noticed helps lower the friction levels, resulting in somewhat reduced heat. At the end of the day, each of these things contributed to an engine running well over 20% cooler IMO. The other thing you need to remember, is that due to the design of the body, no matter how little heat you feel, it will always exhaust on the riders legs. It's also very very important to make sure that the gray foam inserts on the lower part of each side of the fairings are placed as they're supposed to be. They do move, especially on the right side. They're quite effective at reducing heat, but were no doubt an afterthought by Kawi.

After looking at many posts I thought we had a monopoly on cool running ZX14 bikes in FL, and the new 'busa and all the other ZX14s need an extra fan !!!

Suzuki thought it runs so hot it needs a second fan, the spec sheet mentions it :P

maybe it was a ploy to insure the bike has extra weight!

An intersting item is that the new Busa radiator is much smaller than the ZX14's. There
are two on the 08 Busa. The upper one is for engine liquid cooling and the lower one for
oil cooling. The 14's oil is water cooled so there is no radiator type oil cooler.

Per the main topic of this thread:

1. 1 bar below on hiway at 55+ mph, 1 bar above below 55 mph (highway or back roads)
with temps in the 90's.

2. Hit the top mark only once last year with temp at 100 F and idling.

3. Running Engine Ice + 2/3 bottle of Water Wetter. Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W-40 oil.
Brock's Gen III StreetSmart + PC, flies out. Getting my Michelin Pilot Powers installed
as I write this. On the 3rd set of tires.

4. Waiting to see if Concours14 2nd fan will fit ZX14. Just a measure of comfort when
riding in slow traffic on a hot day.

5. Like the front of the new Busa. Hate the back end. Last year Busa's outsold the 14 by a
margin of 2 to 1 per latest Sport Rider magazine. I'd still get the 14 over the Busa.

stopping or idle for more than a few minutes or sitting at a stop light the temp bar is at its highest mark........ riding local roads 1 bar off of the highest mark. Highway riding is fine, does that qualify as hot for U? and b4 u ask its a '07 with about 400 mi on it

your bike is new and tight, during the break in you will have more heat, that break in oil does not prevent friction, it promotes it for the break in, after your oil change you will notice a big improvement, in more than just the cooling, shifting will improve as well. put a full aftermarket exhaust system and remap for it and voila no more problems. the stock pipes hold a ton of heat. even if you leave the stock pipes on the bike will run cooler with time and oil changes. i have 3500 miles and i am on my third change using motul dino oil. next time(soon) i will switch to synthetic oil and that will help even more, trust me.

sounds like it should work ok, as long as you don't get the overtemp alert you are in the bikes operating range. it would be nice to have numbers instead of bars. i use synthetic mobil 1 in my small block chevy and it definitately runs cooler with the synthetic oil. i will be switching to synthetic in the 14 soon.
