Knock on idle?

hey newbie here again... my 14 has approx 500 miles and has a faint knocking noise to it on idle its not the clutches i noticed them too so rule that out, just wondering if its a normal noise with the 14 before i go too the dealer.

Pretty common, it is often the vibration dampers (counter-balancer) need adjustment.

and thats something the dealer should be able too adjust? ive actually been pretty good too the bike not taking up higher than 6000 rpm so i was starting too worry if it was something serious.

MIne started to do it too....on Monday night I changed my oil (1000kms on the bike) and shortly afterwards I noticed the knock.
My dealer had one in and changed the clutch basket parts and it still knocked.

There have been a couple things mentioned that could cause the noise...
cam chain tensioner
counter balance shafts

Many ppl did the balance shaft adjustment and still had the knocking.

Mine only does it sometimes now...we'll see how it is tomorrow.

Mine has done it since I got it new. I now have close to 3800 miles on it and it still does it, but it has gotten alot better. It's the loudest right after it idles down from a cold start. After a little bit of riding, you don't really hear it unless you pull the clutch in. I've changed the oil several times and it looked clean. I'm gonna ride it until I notice it getting worse, but for now it hasn't caused any problems, just gets annoying sometimes.

My buddies 07 in the shop right now, same knocking sound at 500 miles, just after oil change. The tech says it aint right but Kawi says to bad and live with it till it blows up or goes out of warranty. Kawasaki hopes its the latter and they'll wash they're hands of it.

Just after the oil change! Mine has 600 miles on it, and I did my first oil change Monday night and that's when the knock started.
I used KAWI 15w50 full synthetic oil and KAWI oil filter.

I have an 07 too but it's not knocking,,, Thank God!!! I don't think its related to oil changes or even types of oil used. Tech thinks the crank needs to be shimed, to much play side to side. I have been following this problem on all ZX-14 forums and it seems like the number of 07's is growing larger by the day. This dosen't even take in account the peeps that we never hear about or don't use the net. I think Kawaski has a big problem brewing. I just hope they step up and fix the problem instead of putting they're heads in the sand. Unfortuntly, looks like my buddy is going to have to seek a lawyer on this one.

He's not going to hear anything Kawasaki wont let him hear. Kawi saying theres no problem with their bikes. They sent out that BS bulletin about noises the engine making like cam chain ten. and clutches but nothing about the engine knocking. Like that suppose to cover all abnormal engine noises. They told my buddy's tech that they're not authorizing him to go inside the engine and that if he did then it was going to be "his baby". Nice huh?

I've got 5 years warranty on mine for just this reason. I figured a new design bike would have things wrong with it. My little knock started before my first oil change so I don't think it's that. I ride the hell out of it and put the little knock in the back of my mind. I'm not going to worry about it too much until something happens.

Ok, last night I adjusted both balance shafts. It made no difference in the knock pattern, it just knocked the whole time I adjusted!!

So it's not the balance shafts!

Like blackbullet76 says, I am not gonna worry about it either, I have 4 yrs warranty! My dealer is fully aware of the knock sound.

I have a 2007. I adjusted both shafts too. Still knocking. I was very concerned when I first heard it, but since I've heard of alot of others having the same thing, I'm not so worried. I'm just going to get a smeg, then I won't hear it!

Mine is heard at idle and slowing down I hear it right before I stop from about 4k rpm down to idle. And sometimes I'll try to show it to someone else, and I start it and it won't do it.

Could it maybe be the injectors?

well my bikbues at the shop, they just called tech said he rode it and hears the knock, so he called kawasaki, and talked to a guy who said that they have heard nothing about a knock in the engine on the 14s. lol this guy stated "I just bought a 14 myself and its probably clutch noise but mine has no knock thats probably what hes hearing" in other words live with it. my tech agrees with me its a knock and not clutches. He said they gave some number for warranty and if something happens its covered. My tech said he adjusted the balance shafts but no luck there.

I think this knock is just the normal sound of the motor. Everyone I talk to has the same noise and nothing is wrong. Mine is brand new and does it also. I wouldnt worry.

Well guys let me weigh in here ...Mine did it from day one ... Even the dealer heard it and i have heard it on two other zx14s ..Tonytooths zx14 is the only one i have not heard it coming from... I did reset my Ballancers and it seemed to go away for a short time ...But it's back now and resetting the ballance shafts didn't help .... Now keep in mind that mine has done it from day one and i have over 500 1/4 miles passes plus some very high speed passes ...I'm a long time engine builder (33 years) and the sound is not rod side clearance .. I have set up motors with 5 times the rod side clearance set by the factory and they will make ZERO noise !! Now if it were crank pin to bearing clearance it would make a knocking sound and would fail with in Just a few miles , so you can rule that out ...

That leaves to items >>> wrist pin and piston slap ... I'm ruling out wrist pin because it would get increasing worse with time....Now back to piston slap >>mine is louder cold than hot , that tells me the piston if swelling with heat and as it gets bigger the sound lessens...
This is something you should know about after market pistons and HP motors >> the wrist pin is not offset ..On factory motors the pin is offset to one side to load the piston to one side if the wall and that stop all piston rattle ... I have seen the zx14 pistons first hand and they have NO off set....The zx14 with its small skirts and no off set pins will rattle ...

That brings us to another point ...ZX14 is a race motor and the piston are going to make some noise , some worse than others ... I have had my bodywork off the bike and tried to find where the sound is coming from and can't hear a damn thing ....I put the body work back on and i hear it again !!! I hear it best setting on the bike with my helmet on with my face shield flipped up ....I take my helmet off and i can't hear it ... The body work and my helmet make the sound louder ....The body work acts as an amplifier..

End of story is you have no problem ....If smokin can make 500+ passes and NOT break it you have no problem .. Now go ride you bike and have fun ...

Well put smokin'!!

My dealer's head salesman has an 07 ZX14 for a demo bike. He hasn't hit 1000kms on his yet, nor has he done an oil change! But I am 100% sure that once he changes his oil, he'll get the 'knock'!!

I am no longer concerned, infact I rarely notice it these last few days. I actually had to think about it to hear it!!

Once my dual slipons are on tomorrow, I bet the knock will be gone!!

That's exactly how mine does. Sounds like a paint can rattling when coming to a stop. Again, I aint gonna worry
