Another clutch thread..listen drag racers

Alright guys, it's been a year since i picked up my bike. I was sitting around today thinking of all the abuse and torture i put it thru......only 2500 miles on the ODO and about 400 dragstrip pass's. I have been thru 7 clutchs, 4 back tires and a half dozen chains. I have awhole new set-up this year and still trying to work the bugs out of it. i havent beat my best from lastyear...but i'm close. I started playing with my clutch today and found a few things out. Ever since the first clutch i burned up i have been trying different combinations of fibers. None of them has had the "feel" of the ol'e factory clutch. This year i'm having a problem with a short stack hight to meet specs with the MTC lock-up. You need between .100-.125 clearance between the fingers and the pressure plate. Now i'm using all zx11 fibers in there now. This is fine and dandy but their alittle thinner than some of the factory fibers. This gives me the correct stack hight but it leaves me with a clutch lever with about a inch of travel.
When i launch the bike the clutch throw is so short it's almost like dumping the clutch coming out of the hole. Most of the time it spins.....if it hooks it bogs, no good. So i sat down with the calipers today and found this out. My stack hight with stock steels and zx11 fibers was...2.048in or 51.71mm. Factory specs for stack hight are............
2.11-2.14in or
53.52-54.52mm....as you can see this was waaay to short but, this gave me the correct space between the fingers and the pressure plate..."which is what MTC called for. So i went back thru and tried to figure out how to increase stack hight and still keep the lock-up in specs. I figured out by using the thicker steels i can get the stack hight up to 54.41mm or 2.156in. Now i will still be using the zx11 fibers but i will have the benefit of the thicker steels...which will give me back my clutch throw. I'm going to space the lock-up off the pressure plate to get the correct distance and see what she will do. If anybody wants to chime in on this let me know...i'm not a expert but i have done this sooo many times

You can use 'Busa fibers to build the stack. They run 3.04 -2.97 mm in thickness. Just out of curiosity, how come you have gone through so many chains?

well you can get the zx11 fibers cheap and ill burn up 2 sets of steels before i go thru 1 set of fibers. The first 2 chains i just wanted more stretch in the bike...the next 3 i stretched and they got tight spots...and the last one i stripped some teeth on the back sprocket and it messed up the chain too.

So I can run zx11 fibers with the 14 steels and will have the same clutch throw and stack height as stock???

Good info on the cost of fibers. I'm currently paying $11 ea. for the 'Busas. My clutch loves me now that I check it every week, oil it down and throw in a fiber or steel as needed. I do about 10-20 runs a week (skipping a week here and there).

The reason I ask about your chain is that I've heard some scary stories about them breaking and I have about 250 runs on mine. What do you look for on the chain stretching? Can you identify tight spots when the chain is on or does it have to be off?

I think he was saying that it wasn't the same because the fibers are thinner. He is going to try the larger 2.9mm steels vs the 2.6mm ones to bring it back into spec.

No...with zx11 fibers and the stock 2.6mm fibers your stack hight will be way too low. I'm just using this set-up to achieve the space i need for my lock-up. I'm going to try the 2.9mm steels with the zx11 fibers...and if i done my #'s correct it will put me back in OE specs. I ordered them friday and should have them by the end of next week....ill let you guys know how it works.

Put your bike up on a stand and just spin your back tire...if it rolls smoothly your ok..if the tire stops spinning in a spot you have a kink...

385 passes, 2nd clutch still pulling strong, 4th tire, 1 chain, lots of oil changes.
Couldn't be more satisfied!!!

I know the question wasn't for me but I've slowed a tenth since the weather has changed.
Now to stay on topic I and using busa fibers in my bike and so far with only 6 runs it seems ok however, if I dont see some 50's again I'm gonna swap it out as soon as the set for the 14 arrives.

I was told busa fibers are thicker....not sure because i dont have one in front of me. Did that put your stack hight in specs...2.11-2.15? The only problem i see with the zx11 fibers so far is that they get sticky when the bike sits. I'm not sure if its just the material their made out of or what...but you better not try and start the bike in gear because it wants to take off if you do....thats how sticky they get. Let it warm up for a minute and your fine...

The 'Busa fibers are within the thickness spec for 14 fibers. I measured the 'Busa fibers that I have right now and they are between 2.97 and 3.04 new - most lean toward the 2.9x range. Right now I swap in 2.3 or 2.9 steels as needed to keep my stack height at the tall end of spec as the fibers wear down from thick to thin. I've made 32 runs in the last 3 weeks with numerous hot laps and I've had to swap out a 2.6 for a 2.9.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if I'm quicker with a stack height at the low or the high end of the spec. --or if it doesn't matter.

Turns out that the 'Busa fibers are the exact same part used for the outermost 14 fiber.

Sorry for the late response.
Shit I slowed 2 tenths, sometimes more depending on the track.

Went from 8.90 to 9.10's and 9.20's. Our humidity down in south Louisiana is unreal.

Can't wait for the winter time to come back.

Ok, i finally got the clutch installed with the thicker 2.9mm steels. With all 2.9's and zx11 fibers the stack hight was 2.178...i took out 2-2.9's and put in 2 of the stock steels and got a stack hight of 2.161....close enough for me. I put the lock-up back on and only had like 60 thou between the finger and the pressure plate. I found some small lock washer the correct thickness and flaten'd them out and spaced the lock up off the pressure plate. Now it's .102 off the pressure plate well with-in MTC specs. I never got a chance to get in it, but everything feels ok. I have my clutch throw back and hopefully my 60's. If it does'nt rain wednesday i'll find out.
