Tool Choice ?
Hey Guys... Here's a topic that should get varying opinions... Got my new 14 three weeks ago... figured i'd start on some small mod's... im by no means a mechanical wizard...but having owned bikes for quite some time..there are certains things i feel comfortable doing... Frame Sliders for instance...now hard hard could that be? Well...that old saying about the right tool for the job...ive never seen so many allen & hex bolts in my life - a little out of touch huh? anyway i obviously dont have the right tools for my 07 ZX14...Figuring on just doing some general maintenance & Mods ( oil, filter plug changes, exhaust, pc, gearing change, some cosmetics) I see Sears/Craftsman has numerous tool set collections? Not sure any one set would give you all you need... might be better to buy separatley... Should i just look the bike over & make a list? Funny i havent seen it discused here much...gawd am i the only one without the proper set of tools?

allen wrenchs cut for use in the chuck of my cordless drill.
Otherwise metric 3/8 an 1/4 drive socket set,
impact screwdriver always is a must to prevent stripped phillips heads, or allen heads
new philps driver, and heat gun for the secondary throttle plates (flies) is a MUST!
Yes I already owned these tools, just a good starting list for ya
Don't forget a rear stand for lubing the chain

Probably not, looking at some of the posts here and at the other site. Sure, a good craftmans set is a great way to start. Allen "T" handle sets are fairly cheap at auto parts stores. I'd suggest a set of 3/8ths drive allen sockets AND a swivel head 3/8ths rachet.
the rachet makes everything easier.
A torque wrench is a good thing Too...., Plus a factory manual. Theres a free pdf one somewhere on this site.
Get 6point sockets if you can or later as needed. Saves on stripped bolt heads in hard to loosen or hard to get at fasteners.
Go easy on the rubber mounted allen body screws. They will rip free if you torque on them. Or in my case I used too much locktite and the rubber broke free when I went to reremove the finned body panel on a later project.
Oh 1 must have. The big bottle of Locktite "blue". Jap bikes have come a LONNG way in fasteners in the past 30 years, but they still are Jap bikes. The fasteners arent top of the line and whatever they go into isnt the highest quality either. So keeping things from loosening saves stripped threads,lost parts etc.
I got a box of metric nuts and bolts from Motosport for my Jap dirt bike. Half the price of what you see them for in Bike shops. There has been a need for them on this street bike. Web stores are also a place to shop tools. Any of the web catalogs are usually much cheaper tnan shops. Especially tires.

A good stand is priceless. I just bought a forward handle pit bull and its ok. For 50 bux less an awesome VORTEX stand is offered, instead of the handle being forward the handle itself pops off.

Thanks guys... i have some tools.....just not alot to deal with the all allen & hex nuts/bolts... got a stand Steve a little different than what most here seem to use....but i figured id give it a shot..

Hey DAC, Like that stand. How much did it cost ya? Now, with the stand and your new tools: (1) get a full exhaust system, (2) get a Power Commander, (3) pull the flies, and (4) hang on for dear life and be prepared for a smile you can't wipe off your face.

Hey Raptor... The stands like $210... i like it because you can tilt the bike back on it to lift the front wheel (kinda like the factory centerstand)... ive got a whole list of upgrades i want to do (dont we all)... working on some small items first...then after my first dealer service.... onto the fly removal...pc & exhaust.. i figure before you & i ride ive got to get some upgrades done...dont want you showing me up too bad... nah... you wouldnt do that...would ya? ...of course all those upgrades could take a while....took a whole Saturday just to paint my inner rims...
