Wrapping exhaust

Several have pm'd and asked me about wrappign exhaust so I figured I'd post a topic. My friends on the street wrap theirs mainly to reduce heat, which it does veery effectlively.

I've no drag race experience with wrapping, but my exhaust on my track bike we wrapped and the difference was noticable. Not sure how many HP I gained out of it, but the throttle response was improved big time which is so critical coming out of the turns.

Here is one note passed to me about wrapping when I was debating it:

"Exhaust Insulating Wrap: Insulating wrap for exhaust headers is claimed to increase horsepower while reducing the external temperature by up to 70%. Wrapping exhausts with Header Wrap maintains hotter exhaust gases that exit the system faster through decreased density. Increased exhaust scavenging is produced, along with lower intake temperatures."

Basically, it appears to me wrapping forces exhaust out faster, whech leads to the increased throttle response. Again I'm sure there are HP gains, but I didn't dyno before and after, and the race tracks aren't about the big HP numbers anyway.

Spend $135 to $150 and do it right. Get them ceramic coated rather than wrapping. My 2 cents. http://www.centuryperformance.com/heatwraps.asp. Other option is to try a sock rather than a wrap http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=THM&MfrPartNumber=11248&CategoryCode=3638B. If the link doesn't work then do a Google on Advanced Auto Parts and then search on exhaust wraps.. They might want your zip code before the link is active.

Wrapping is far superior to ceramic coatings as far as function. But cosmetically ceramic looks a hell of a lot nicer. I've had 2" header wrap on all my bikes. Its been on my 12r/Yosh for over 6 years and its still excellent, except where the small stones have damaged the wrap underneath. But in fairness my bike sees 1 mile of gravel road EVERY time it gets ridden, so if you never ride on a gravel road you may never have any issue.

And never wrap Titanium pipes. TI cant take the heat that stainless steel can. It will harden and become brittle from the extreme heat cycles. Ti "work hardens".

Thats a proven fact. The most gain in performance and decrease in heat will come from wrapping. Wrapping handles heat better. If you look at the pro race bikes, yup they're wrapped too. And as I stated I wrap my track bike, not my ZX14. The track bike is for performance, the ZX14, well, the chicks dig how it looks and thats about all I use it for anyway.

I never tried the sock, but we wrap so much around the exhaust its effective. raptor the advice you gave installing my Brock's was the best, and the next time I wrap I'll also try that sock thingie

it appears to me that wrapping burns unburned fuel that would exit with unwrapped exhaust..

but i'm dumfounded that it would lower intake heat... kinda sounds like snake oil there

How it works I don't care. But when I get throttle response results I got by wrapping, thats about all that matters to me. I was just saying that was the "science" that was given to me when I was debating the wrap :P

It lowers oil temps also i you wrap the pipe back to the midpipe. (like it should be)
And it reduces the heat that comes off the engine thru the side slots.
It increases the temp of the muffler itself. So dont wrap a pipe with a carbon can or it will deform and look like shit.
It will also discolor the stainless mid pipe to a golden yellow color.
It will also make an unheated wideband or start to function quicker.
