Running Hot?

I was running around the city today and got caught in some traffic for about 20 mins of stop and go crap. I noticed the temp gauge had all the bars lit. Bike was hot yes but ran fine. Stayed with all bars lit for about 5 mins. I was concerned it was going to overheat but traffic finally cleared and as soon as I got going the temp bars came back down. Anyone else experienced this? Anyone actually had theirs overheat?

Thanks
Frank

its normal for the temp gauge to run up in traffic. My bike do it but it never really runs hot. I hear once you put on an after market exhaults system it will run way cooler.

Pretty normal. I got a lot of that last summer here in TX, never had a problem. I think we figured out that unless high temp starts flashing on the display, there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

I'd still be interested in modifying the fan circuit to come on at a lower temp, or to be able to add a 2nd fan.

Thanks for your replies. I read on another post that this happens but thankfully have not seen any post where the bike actually overheated. I have a full Muzzy and the Muzzy fan. I can tell you It was hotter than hell sitting on the bike in traffic but once you get going again all is fine. Love the bike and still fast as crap.

Mine used to do exactly the same.
Since pulling the flies and installing a power commander the top bar hasn't lit up yet.
Bikes running rich run cooler.

With my recent mods ... I added a second fan on the right side of the radiator.
I used a fan from a CBR600 and wired it into the other fan so they come on at
the same time. No problems with temps in traffic.

I'm running with Engine Ice coolant and Redline Water Wetter (about 1/2 of the bottle). In all honesty, the Engine Ice doesn't seem to make the engine run any cooler than regular etylene glycol (green stuff). However, the Water Wetter, used with either ethylene glycol coolant or propolyne glycol (Engine Ice) does keep the engine from heating up as fast and it cools down quicker. Thus it helps at stop lights. It won't do much good in terms of steady state temperature if your running slow in stop and go traffic conditions.

My bike hit the top bar only once, on a 100 degree day after a few mintures at idle. Soon as I started moving it cooled down. It has never flashed at me, which is the indication of overheating.

Mine flashed once for 1 min. sitting at a light last summer when bike was new. No issues this year but the second fan will be a mod for me. At least then I can have two chicken legs for dinner after each ride this summer.

Gets a bit that way. With summer over down here I'm considering coating the headers to try and keep some of the ambient heat down.
