Metzler Dragtech....
I wanted to give you guys alittle heads up on the metzler dragtech. I got a call a few weeks ago from schnitz saying my dragtech was in and since i was getting my bike dyno tuned that week i was just going to come in and pick it up. So while Ryan was tuning my bike i walked up front and to get the tire. One of the first things i noticed was it looked nothing like the picture. The pictures i seen this was supposed to be a flat carcus tire almost like a slick with just groves cut in it. If you ever look at the mikeys you will see what i'm talking about. i thought " oh well"...we'll see what she does. I mounted it and threw it on the digital scale...it's almost 4 pounds lighter than my wore out 190 shinko...good start. We'll it rained the last 3 weeks on wednesday night so no racing for us. Last night was the first time the track was open this year.
Ok here is what happend lastnight....48 degrees and windy. Track had a new bunout pad poured and it was prepped just before we got there. Now i say it had a brand new pad because i think some of the dust in the concrete was getting tracked up to the start line. One of the first cars down the track was a malibu which broke both back wheels off clean at the drum....ok so maybe the track is going to hook! My first pass was at 24 psi and a moderate burnout to scuff up the tire.....it lights the tire up instantly out of the hole (crap). 2nd pass....20 psi, moderate burnout...tire spins and hooks after 50ft (crap)....3rd pass...15 psi small burnout...tire tries to hook spins 10 feet but i'm clutching the hell out of it (crap)....4th pass 10psi...big burnout...tire didnt feel like it wanted to hold any heat....blows tire off abort pass(crap)...this continued all night. I understand this was the first race of the year and the track is going to have to come around...but my first impression of the metzler is not good. I seen a mickey hooking lastnight on that 500hp muzzy zx10 we all seen pictures of. They detuned it to 380 horse (???) and it was running like poop lastnight....but the tire was hooking. So the Metzler gets a thumbs down for now.....

Well it's offical....i hate this tire. Tonight we had a good track and great weather. I wasn't too happy when we got there because i was still having traction problems. I took the psi down to 10 and the tire finally tried to hook. It took a medium burnout and a soft clutch hand to get my best 60..... a 1.45 and the bike did 1.41-42 last year with less stretch. I have to say it hooks on the street but not at the track. The tire has a habit of peeling in the middle. You can rub your fingers down the middle and it chunks up and breaks off in little small peices...i'm not happy with this tire and will probaly go back to a shinko

Are the Shinkos any count in the curves or on the street or is this tire strictly for the drag strip?

While the shinko somewhat retains the shape of a std. tire, I have not heard any
reports of drag racers trying them in the canyons.

The 180 has a more rounded profile for the curves than the 190 does. I am no speed demon in the curves but I've pushed the Shinko to my limits a few times. Never had any fear of it breaking loose.

That's exactly the 'cold tear' you get with a roadrace tire when you don't use tire warmers. Using a tire warmer to get heat right into the carcass would likely make it work more consistent, if not better.
In time they'll figure out the difference betwwen road and drag racing.

It looks like they just took their racetechs and rebadged them as dragtechs.....same design, tread patter..everything. It's a shame they didnt stick with their orignal design.

i by accident bought the wrong shinko, r003, does not say u-soft but looks identical. i had 20 lbs when it was brand new and didn't warm it up hardly at all on a brand new track and it hooked great 1.498, 9.26. i tried to launch harder and spun. the next week went to 10 lbs and hooked every time 1.515 9.51 is this one of the reasons my et was slower, less air press? thanks for the toys flatoutbu! are you in the 8's yet? lets go before they run out of patches

10 lbs of air will not slow you down that much. I expect your 330 times were off from your 9.26 run.

I tried lastnight...i made 8 pass's and none of them great. I couldnt even match what i did last year..... yet. I know with this new set-up it's going to take some time to get the bugs out. I had the bike tuned on race gas and yet run race gas at the strip. Lastnight was the first full night of racing we got in this year because of rain. I have 5 gallons of u4.1 coming tomorrow and one of those fast and furious nights tomorrow night.....if it doesnt rain. Track prep will be crap and the metzler sucks but maybe i can pull something out of my ass and make a decent run...even at my weight i should go 9.00's 8.90's

No spray yet...but i do have the bottle and progressive box sitting behind me. No secrets just alot of pass's...and clutchs. I went consestant 9.20's at the end of last year with the gen 3..bolt on's(7 out) pc,shinko and airshifter. It took me about 4 months and 5 clutchs to get there but i did. It's all in the 60 foot. This year I'm 3 inchs longer...sidwinder,u4.1 and lock-up. I done my best pass on mr9 with a 9.22 but by the end of the year, i did 9.23 on pump gas. i have been trying to cut weight but just cant seems to keep the pizza out of my mouth.
The bike put down 183hp 104tq (no stretch)with my first set-up and 190hp 110tq with 11 inchs of stretch and a heavy ass shinko...on Ryan Schnitz dyno...to be honest i seen a big gain in a catalyst seat...it's 8 pounds lighter and alot easier to launch the bike..(but it really hurts your ass)
Big props to blue max for doing what it took me months to do...

The Extensions were a huge help, dropped .5 in my times.
My best is 1.48 60ft. 6.055@116 9.454@143 backed it up with another 9.45, 30minutes later.
It's gotta be the PC3 and fuel on the back half, our front half numbers are close,
but you kill me on the other end.
What is your 330 avg. time?
Mine are 3.95 range.

around the same....most of it was in my 60's 1.43-1.44. They say a tenth on the 60 is good for 2 up top....not sure of that thou...
UPDATE....the metzler still sucks but took it too the track lastnight for a fast and furious night....Lots of junk cars and a poop track but found a real soft way to launch the bike and sandbagged all night and won. Dialed in 9.50 and come out like a turtle with 1.60 60's and clamped on the brakes to run 9.50's around132-138mph. i figure running it out the back door would have been good for 9.20's....now when i get my shinko and get my 60's back down to the 1.40 range i figure i can go 9.00 easy...started raining on my last pass of trophy so i never got a chance to run it all out...hopefully shinko will be here before next wednesday.

i'm not keen on drag racing or anything and honestly believe there are Pilot Race and then everyone else on the round tracks, but is metzler a low-budget tire? Sounds like some crap I'd find on clearance in the back of a JC Whitney catalog

No way, Metzeler is top shelf stuff, just not for drags.
They can make a good drag tire, if they spend the time to sort it out.
