BUTTERFLIES
Im a British biker and i got a 2007 model ZZR1400 which im running with 2 scorpion cans. Im disappointed it's performance below 4000rpm - I know this has been asked many times before but there's so much stuff on it i cant make head nor tail from it. Would appreciate an answer for someone who has done it. So here goes..
1. Does removing the secondary butterflies void the warrantee?
2. Does it require remapping or similar electronic tweaking?
3. Is the power boost you get bellow 4000rpm worth while?
4. Does it use more fuel.
5. Does it effect anything else apart from power boost?.
6. Im not mechanically minded - is it easy to do or should i get my dealer to do it?
Finally, i only got 1600 miles from my first rear tire, i guess this will be further reduced afterwards hehehe
Many thanx in advance.

1. Check with your dealer. It's really up to them.
2. Yes. It'll be too lean. You will need a map.
3. Definately. Wished I had done mine earlier.
4. Only because your right wrist likes it better.
5. Does not affect anything else.
6. Very easy. Steve can point you to a good writeup.
Good luck!

Spooky,
It's really worth getting a Power Commander, removing the secondary butterfly's and having the fuel injection re-mapped on a dyno.
The standard Torque curve actually falls above 3000rpm and that's what you feel when riding. The modified bike is a total transformation, the curve still flattens a bit but there's much more power and torque and the throttle response is what you'd expect from a 1400cc bike.

Yeah, it's night and day difference. You won't regret doing it. Just takes a little while to get used to the extra power.

Spooky,
First you need to go to Brocks Perfromance website and read his diaries (Low End Performance gains). I suggest before you pull the butterflies you have Dynojet PCIII and full exhaust. If you buy from Brock, he provides you all the maps with street and track combinations for the 14 with any combination of his exhaust. On one of the diaries (TRE v. no secondaries), Brock picked up approximately 15hp and 25 ft lbs of torque at a little over 3K rpms. The adjustment is so worth it. It's an instant smile producer and stress reliever.
I'm not very mechanically inclined and did it in around an hour and a half including all body work assembly. Be very careful not to drop any bolts into the motor (take your time). I bought a magenitizer and used a magnetic screw driver. I didn't need to heat the screws to loosen the locktite. I just put a lot of downward pressure and made sure not to strip the srews. The hard part was propping up the gas tank high enough to allow access to the butterflies without disconnecting the tank. Have a buddy help hold it while you do the work.

If you keep the throttle twist-grip closed there's no danger of the motor ingesting a screw because the main butterfly's are below the secondaries. I bought a long-bladed screwdriver of the correct size and it was a 15 minute job.

Good point BobC.
I used some painters tape to hold the throttle closed to the front brake lever and put a zip tie on the throttle cable where it attaches to the left side of the motor to help insure they it would stay closed. I don't have the steadiest of hands, so can't be too careful.

Yeah, use a long #2 phillips that's magnetic. Take a small hammer to tap the screwdriver once you have it in place on the screws. This is supposed to loosen the loctite. I did that and didn't have a bit of trouble taking them out.

+1 - You will not be dissapointed. The throttle response is way more linear, but be carefull, you may not be able to wipe the smile off your face for a while!

Not being mechanical can turn this 5 minute job into a headache/nitemare
Phillips screwdriver new/good quality and the right size.
Don't let the screws fall past the primaries
Good magnet for screw retrieval

It's really not that hard.
Cliff notes version.
Take the side grills off
Remove the ram air covers
Remove the front part of the tank cover
Lift up the tank
Remove the access plates to the the throttle bodies
Remove the screws to the upper throttle blades
Use needle nose pliers to pull the blades out.
Re-assemble..
