the 14 in warm weather

Since hotter days are coming, I was wondering how hot the 14 runs during 90+ degree days? I guess this question is targeted towards the 06 14 owners that rode during the summer months last year. Thanks.

Mine never overheated. I appears that it runs warm, but not soo much to overheat and puke antifreeze nor flash the overheat warning.

1. Mine never overheated. Overheating only occurs if the indicatoris blinking at you. It never did that.

2. Most of the time when moving over 40 mph the temp indicator ran at the mid-mark on 90+ deg F days. Under 40 mph it ran one mark above the middle. Only once did it ever go to the top mark. It was 100 degrees outside, I had been pushing the bike real hard, rounded a corner to find road work up ahead and all traffic at a dead stop. Five minutes at idle and the temp gauge reached the top mark. I just shut the engine off as I didn't know how long I was going to be stuck. About a minute later I turned the engine back on and all was fine.

3. About mid-summer I added about 1/2 a bottle of Water Wetter. It didn't really effect the cruise temps at all. Same indicator marks for going less than and more than 40 mph. What it did effect was the rate at which the system heated up and cooled down. It heated up slower so I could sit at a red light longer without it reaching one mark above center and it cooled down very quickly.

4. This summer I'm trying Engine Ice coolant (propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol) and I added about 1/2 bottle of Water Wetter. It got cold on me again up in the northeast so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

5. Although I hear the 07's don't run as hot what I really believe is that the 07 temp calibration has been changed, not the cooliing system. Kawasaki reps have told me a couple of times that the 06 temp gauge reads a hot spot rather than the average value and that the calibration needed to be updated. Don't know this for a fact but a calibration has no cost associated with it and the production hardware stays the same between 06 and 07.

+1

Thats the most popular product in south FL. My ZX14 didn't have probs before I dumped it in last summer though.

Yeah stevewfl, you da one who made me decide to give Engine Ice a try. Actually I'm cheating since Water Wetter is compatible with Engine Ice so I guess its a seat of the pants test of regular antifreeze and Engine Ice, both with Water Wetter. It's gotta clear up here someday. I just installed a TechMount and Garmin Zumo 550 as well as changed the coolant, so I'm going nuts not being able to ride.

Have been out on over 40C days (over 104F)
Bike is showing full on the guage and the heat coming from the engine onto the knees can be pretty uncomfortable but theres never been any sogn of overheating or issues due to heat.

I think the guage topping out pretty early and the engine being right next to the plastic by the knees with the frame going over the engine instead of around combines to make the issue seem worse than it is.

85% H20, 15% glycol and Water Wetter allows the bike to dump off heat much quicker than the 50/50 mix. I've done this for every bike I've ever owned - You think the 14's bad about heat - try riding a 2001 R-1 with 50/50. That bike would routinely get up to 251 at a redlight here in Houston.

I use Redline water wetter. Never went past 1 bar below the end at any temps or speeds; even at idle for extended periods, but the heat on the rider can get warm. It's much better with a full system than with the original cans and PC3 mapping has a marked effect on the engine heat...richer mixtures make a huge difference on the heat output. When you lean it out, you see the heat rise much quicker, both on the gauge and on heat coming up from the front. 95% of the time, it would run at the halfway mark or less. My R1 is 100 times worse. That's one thing the Busa has over the 14...no heat issues at all.

Mine never overheated and Ive done some 90+ degree days in manhattan traffic. I would not say the bike runs cool though, my 98 blackbird ran cooler.

Definately. The Blackbird also seemed to lose ambient heat as soon as it was moving - the 14 seems to bring it with it (still heat coming from the knees area while cruising - the XX was cool once moving)

Well, I did a mod to my 14 yesterday that I done to my 01 zx6r when I had it. I installed a bypass switch so I can turn on the fan anytime I want. I did this on my zx6r when I would be in stop and go traffic and it would pretty much hold the temp it was at before I turned it on. I hope it does just as good for the 14. We'll see soon enough.

See, Michelin PPs work best in snow too. Wish I'd have had them back when I lived around the GAP.

Maybe they'll work in Florida sand too, cuz PPs are the BEST
