If you get a ticket
I have been reading a lot about this lately. Here is my .02 it has worked for me many times.
When you get a ticket even if it is the first one find out your who your elected official is at the county or state level. It should be easy to find out who your elected are as they were on the last ballot. Given that 99% of politicians are also lawyers I would hasten to bet that the local official is either a practicing lawyer or is affiliated with a practicing law firm. Make an appointment with the elected official in his/her lawyer capacity and during the meeting ask them if you would like to get the penalty of the ticket reduced. IF the elected official is not practicing ask who in the law firm specializes in traffic offenses. It should not cost you more than $500 for a ticket NOT classified as reckless driving, more if it is.
Couple of points:
1. It is important to do this even if it is your first ticket as it is much easier for the lawyer to defend a clean record than a tainted one.
2. Why does this help? If you can't figure this out you really do need a lawyer; let's just say it has to do with friends in the legal community and who may have had a part in electing or appointing the judge.
3. Never, ever just pay the fine. Always get a lawyer to at least get the sentence reduced. You can either pay $500 for a lawyer or who knows how much in fines and extra insurance over the years.
If you do take this advice, do everyone a favor an let us know via the board how it worked out for you. I will let you know how my fourth case goes at the end of May (74 in a 55 (although I was clocked at 126. Yes he was a nice cop trying to give me a break)).
