RPM Question...
Hello All!
Got a new ZX-14 this past Saturday and have been reading your site ever since! Ton's of great info here...thanks.
My question, I was told that's it better to run the bike say around town in 3rd or 4th gear to keep the RPM's up. This is my first "sport bike" but have been riding my entire life and always tried to get through the gears as quickly as possible.
Is this correct?
Thanks!

Personal opinion on this controversial subject is that you need to get a lot of heat cycles on the engine, not run at near constant rpm. I pretty much kept it under 6K rpm for the first 600 miles with lots of throttle movements. Pretty standard breakin for all my bikes and none have ever used any oil. However, you'll hear from guys who have hit full throttle within the first 100 miles and never had a problem either. I'm prefer to err on the conservative side for break-in.

Thanks for the reply, I bought the bike used with 1500 miles so the break in is past me. I was asking in general.
Thanks!

This to is a personal preference issue. 3rd gear gives you on demand get the f@#$ out of the way power. 6th gives you a bit better fuel mileage I personally ride in 3rd in town but many have diff opinions.

That is great information, turboturtle. So basically you're not going to hurt the bike rolling in 3rd gear all day long? I like the idea of the "get the f@#$ out of the way power" rather than saving a few measly miles in gas.

It runs like a totally different bike witht he flies pulled.
I have mine out .
I like the response and torque around 4-5000 rpm , it doesn't buzz, or make alot of noise, and is just below the meat of the torque curve.
with the flies out you really shouldn't feel the need to drop a gear to accellerate from 5000 rpm, unless you want to wheelie, or race.
You can ride what ever rpm you like, it doesn't have torque off idle like a big v-twin, and doesn't have to scream at 6-7000 rpm like a 600, to accellerate hard in a roll on.
Witht the flies in you have to ride it like a 600 or 750 to get it to pull, and keep it above 6000 rpm.
With the flies in I was not impressed with low rpm power AT ALL.
Seemed like it needed a good down shift or 2 to wake it up and get it above 6500rpm.
They really neutered it for the newbies

I rode the first 2000 with the flies in and the next 1800 with them out and a PC.
if you have them in, you will find your own level, if you like to feel the power with them in you will need to stay at 5500 to 6500...
If the flies are out, you need to be careful....the bike will pop up with ease, no one hand riding for that one...a good bump and you can be launched off the back end....
In any event, welcome to the world of sport bikes...
