Craftsman or Snap-On
I am getting a torque wrench for my bike, and I was told by someone I should buy a Snap-On. After I saw how much they cost I almost piddled myself! I have seen that Craftsman has a bunch that is MUCH cheaper, and look as though they will do the job, so I was thinking about going with one of theirs instead. Does anyone have any advice? I know this is a dinky topic, but I am just learning and I would appreciate your input.

I've been using Craftsman torque wrenches for years. Haven't screwed up anything yet.

it doesn't take much, the tools Eric and I lug to the track and beat on are harbor freight, and his cheap torque wrench gets "Hammered".
Of course I prefer ultimately snap-on tools and then craftsman.
Here's an idea for Sears - I belong to "Craftsman days" thingie. Ask about it at Sears. During certain times, you get 10% off tools whether they are on sale or not. And Sears sends out a flyer just for that program that shows everything they have on sale plus they list the extra 10% off price. I'm buying Craftsman almost as cheap as generic tools on that gig.

Just a comment. On the torque wrench thing, go for the beam type instead of the klicker. Never needs calibrating, and is tough as an anvil. Much more dependable than the klickers. Having said that, I very seldom use a torque wrench, mostly torque by feel. Some have it, and some never get it, but it works for me.....TB

yeah, and it would make installing backrests a breeze...
anyway, i am in the market for a new tank and compressor. harborfreight has this on sale:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90234
120V, 4HP (peak), 3HP (rated,) 3400 RPM, Air delivery: 4.5 SCFM @ 115 PSI; 5.6 SCFM @ 90PSI; 6.25 SCFM @ 70 PSI; 7.2 SCFM @ 40 PSI; Auto shutoff @ 115 PSI; Restart @ 85 PSI
4hp, 10 gallon. retail $175, on sale for $140. i think i may order it. ideally i would want a 60 gallon, but my impoverished college student budget cant meet that criteria.

+1 Harbor Freight junkie here. It's just for my bike and car. Not 100 bikes and cars a week. Craftsman and Snap-on are overkill unless you're just rich or a mechanic is your career. Sometimes people don't just pose on bikes, but with everything else too. :P

This forum sure has a history of not letting things go, huh?
I am no big roller, NinjaNick, which is why I want to get tools that will do basic maintenance stuff and upgrades without worrying about them breaking in the near future. The thing is I am not holding back on my bike: Brock's Smeg full exhaust & PCIII, Corbin seats (Shaddup CS & Steve - Lol), Scorpio alarm... I plan to drop a few G's into my bike after I buy it to make it perfect for me. I do not want to scrimp on something like tools but at the same time I don't want to go OVERBOARD either, you know what I am saying?

I didn't say anything!?
My Brock's full exhaust and PCIII on my 14 is the best mod I've put on any bike I've owned, including the plethora of track bike mods that cost a lot more.

10-4 to that...........and I get coupons getting me ANOTHER 10% off for using my Sears card. So when they are on sale, and you can use your Craftsman Club card AND 10 off for the Sears card...........I pretty much get whatever I see....................

Just keep in mind that Craftsman torque wrenches only have a 90-day warranty. Don't let them fool you with that lifetime crap.
Buy a $10 harbor freight torque wrench for all-purpose use on lug nuts & bigger steel stuff, then pick up a high quality Snap-On when you start working on items that matter like engines, small bolts going into aluminum, etc.
I've got a cheap-o torque wrench that goes back and forth to the racetrack (car roadracing) for wheel changes and swaps, then a good Snap-on 1/2 and 3/8 for working under the hood where accuracy and longevity really matters. You'll never have to replace a Snap-On torque wrench if you take care of it.

IMO,
if yer wrenching AROUND the motor craftsman is fine.
if you go INSIDE the motor snapon is the ONLY way to go.
And you'll need 2 tq wrenches: the lil 1/4" drive one in in-#, and the bigger one in 3/8" drive in ft-#.
just my opinion.

I do not ever see myself doing any "engine" work myself, but it is good to know that a Harbor Freight or Craftsman will suffice for the stuff I intend to do.

Cheap works fine for me.
I find it funny that some of the same guys that require Snap-on add a few ft/lbs to the published torgue numbers. I have tested a Harbor Freight against my buds Snap-on
And only 1-2 lbs different at 60 ft/lbs. He is a professional mechanic and pushes
big name tools also. I don't need a $200-250 to make up the 1-2 ft/lbs.
You are probably off by more than that by not cleaning your threads or proper lube on the contact surfaces. I'd really like to test two snap-ons back to back.
I've built several engines with the harbor freight wrench, other than a few #3 rods on 2000 ZX12 engines every thing has been great.
