Seen that thread and reality is theres worse then him out there on the road. Best we can do is expect the worst from all cages and be prepared to use the bikes ability to leave them behind quick and change direction to it's best.
As for the video, learn from it instead of just getting mad. Whatever the reason for the VW pulling into the biker, he could have been safe if his rpms were up higher into the meat of the powerband and he accelerated and positioned himself like the car was going to pull into him anyways. Acclerate HARD and ride to the far side of the lane giving as much distance from your leg and the car as possible. Only way the car has a chance of tagging a bike passing like that is swerving hard enough to take itself out and off the road and even then it may miss or just clip the rear wheel. Rider will be much safer instead of the somewhat lazy pass shown in the video.

If you watch the video closely, there is another car that is just in front of the red car, you can see the shadow at the last second. It is very likely he was just waiting to pass and didn't see the bike.
I think passing very aggressively is the wrong answer. IMO the biker passed too aggressively. Even if the car had just checked their mirrors the bike could have jumped in the way by the time the car tried to pass.
My preference is to move into the passing lane in clear view of the car I'm passing for 2-3 sec so they have a chance to see me, then I squirt past them. I feel like my brakes and some distance are my best out so I don't go by too fast, maybe 20mph faster than the car I'm passing. Passing more than one car will always be dangerous because of the possibility of them also trying to pass. For this reason and I try to avoid it unless I'm convinced the other cars aren't going to try to pass.
If you repeatedly fly past multiple cars like the bike in the video was trying to do, you are going to wind up in the same situation sooner or later, probably by accident. Cagers simply don't think like a rider who has 4x-6x the power to weight ratio.
The guy on the SRT forum is clearly an asshole, but if you lane split like he's talking about, you're going to get clipped sooner or later also. Even if the person does it on purpose you won't be able to do anything about it because you'll never prove it and besides, you were breaking the law. Ya, it's legal in CA but I'd be really uncomfortable doing it there too. People just don't drive with enough awareness for us to get away with stuff like that indefinitely.

...I've been riding in Calif since 1989 and have never had a problem splitting lanes...I have been T-boned, though ...it does come in handy, especially on surfcae streets when you're approaching signaled intersections during rush hour and you want to get ahead and away from all that vehicular traffic.....just move slowly up to the front if there's room....and as far as the freeways go, the reasonable and prudent speed is not more than15mph differential and useless if traffic is already moving at anything over 65mph anyway...and ya' just gotta use your head when you decide to split lanes...just because you can isn't the same as you should or have to... that's my story and I'm sticking to it...

As you approch the last car in a line of others you must read the situation. The car riding the center line and weaving should throw up a red flag. Better safe than sorry.
The driver of the car needs to be found!!!!

In Texas, striking a motorcycle rider and found at fault by the investgating officer is grounds for immediate arrest, no exceptions, regardless how small the incursion is. Being found guilty at-fault striking a motorcycle rider is punishible by jail time exclusive to other charges that are convicted at the same time. It's serious business here in Texas when it comes to giving right-of-way or endangering the life of a motorcyclist.

The fact that the guy got his license plate number on the camera is great. I hope the guy was able to sue the living crap out of that wanker - and get charges filed against him as well for wreckless endangerment. I wish we had laws like what Ojref has in Florida... bikers get zero respect around here except for Bike Week and Biketoberfest.

License plate or not, I bet the cager gets off. I still say the bike was coming around too aggressively and it would have been difficult for the car to anticipate.
As far as lane splitting, I do it at red lights pretty often, but I don't know if I'll ever try it with moving vehicles. At a red light they'd have trouble hitting me if they tried.

Does/did the original thread mention where the original video was from?
Would be interesting to hear the story of the rider and if the other car stopped and actually gave an excuse/reason.

I don't really want to get into debating the rights and wrongs of this RTA but I was always taught that anticipation and observation when driving are crucial, especially on a bike because a dented panel on a car can equate to a critical injury for a biker.
I was also wondering, since when has the second guy in a queue to overtake a slow vehicle had the right of way? Remember the on-bike camera has a wide angle lens and the Red car was only a couple of car lengths behind the front vehicle, the bike was right on his tail, a bit too close for safety. It's a tricky one to call and naturally people on a bike forum want to crucify the car driver but I'm not convinced. There's blame on both sides, they were both driving without regard for each other.

Ya, I'm basically saying what Bob said. I don't think either of them had the right of way and the police would have called it no fault. I didn't see the bike turn on a blinker for one thing, I'm not sure about the car. If the bike had passed more cautiously I think the law would have been on his side though, probably.
