Had to make some extensive thinking how to prepare my 14 for a 3 week and 3000 mile journey with my mate. This turned out to be the best configuration:
Photo was taken at the Col de L'Iseran, France (9080 ft).

If you're saying you don't need luggage, that's just not an option for most people. It can be done but some storage space would generally make a lot more sense.
No matter what you ride some opinionated asshole is going to give you a hard time, so if you're having fun who gives a rat's ass about what anyone thinks.

Phytrax, no offence intented...
There was no useful luggage or racks available specifically for the 14 a year ago. We had a couple of backpacks (the other one was used as a tank bag the most of the time) and that was fine. Sure it was difficult to make everything fit the bags and it seemed to get more and more difficult every day. Almost everything we bought during the trip had to be mailed home.

Hmm... didn't know the US version doesn't have it... it was quite useful for the passenger carrying a backpack, could lower it to the handle making the ride easier for her shoulders.
The Euro version doesn't come with the seat cover as standard.

Ultimately it is MY 14, and I will take advice and criticism for many things, but as far as something like a back rest is concerned I am really confused that it would justify 60 freaking posts. I guess some people are bothered by extremely insignificant things. I get a laugh out of those whom believe that there is only ONE way to enjoy this bike. If your only plan for the bike is to ride hard then so be it, more power to you, but there is a world of opportunities out there and as far as I know the back rest will not lower my HP, make my handlebars vibrate at high speeds, or cause my 14 to magically turn in to a moped.
I have not heard bad things regarding Corbin seats as FBA mentioned, but from his obvious take on what I deem are important to me I do not feel he would empathize with my situation. I want speed; that's why I like this bike. If I wanted torque then I would get a Vulcan 2000, and if I wanted a fast cruiser I would wait for the Suzuki C109, but the 14 is my bike so excuse me if I just want to make it a little more comfortable for me and my occasional passenger.
And may I remind you that the majority of you HATED the way the 14 looked when it first came out. Some of you in the initial posts even mentioned that "Kawasaki gone fucked-up!" Now here we are with the SAME body shape and people are saying that a tiny back rest is going to ruin the appearance of my 14? Please!

What i fail to understand is how anyone here except the 135 lb'rs are able to claim they ride the piss out of a bike with a suspension sprung for flyweights.
Anyone who really rides one hard knows the suspension should be a top priority, but I hardly ever hear anyone speak of these mods.
I would love to ride with some of you guys.
I grew up on bikes, owned bikes since I was 5 yrs old,
Its been a lifelong passion.
I guarantee I would leave many more in the dust than would be ahead of me.
One moment the bottle might be on the bike, the next my daughter.
Yup, I guess I'm a bonafide pussy for sharing one of lifes greatest experiences with my daughter safely.
On the contrary...
A backrest allows her to ride with me at pace she would never experience without one,
It wouldn't be nearly the experience it ought to be.
Having your loved one fall off, injured or worse is not my opinion of cool.
they slip in or out with 1 single pinch bolt, can be removed and installed in seconds...
why one would ride around with it installed and no passenger is beyond my comprehension though,
It sure is Ugly, but it will keep my daughter beautiful!.

... N_K and the doobster... indeed...I think I'm going to put some clip-ons and rear-sets and a chrome sissy-bar on my KLR650...hell, its already got a stout fork-brace and a 320mm front brake mod!

+1 - and on my track bike I have over a grand in suspension alone, and its constantly being adjusted by GMD.
On the 14 and on the street its just not a big deal to me. Of course I won't put "back rests" and luggage all over it..... but each to their own I reckon.

... also I'm not getting any younger (ouch) and every year it gets a little harder to stay tucked up over my rocket for any period of time. I am not a cruiser. However, someday... a 14 with a backrest may appeal to some us... lol.
