Corner, Corners, Cornering

Greetings,

I've owned a ZX12R since the first year they were produced (2000). I'm now thinking of moving to the ZX14 and selling the 12. The one lingering question I have is about cornering clearance. I'm a big boy and I like to get low. The "chicken strips" on my 12 are very small. From those of you who may have had 12's before, or anyone else who cares to chime in, how much will I give up in the area of cornering clearance by moving from the 12 to the 14? Thanks in advance for the input.

Malcolm

I always use all of the tire, on my 12. I've never ridden the 14, but I hear they're good handlers. I find it hard to believe that the 14 is as sporty as the 12, but long-ish and low like a Busa? I hope to ride one sometime, and see for myself.

I use the whole tire - it's no litre bike for sure.
Careful not to drag the fairing.......esp if you lower it.
Still handles amazingly well for what it is.....

I have ridden both, I have not owned a 12 but do have some seat time on one. I do own a 14
It has over 10,000 on it and have burned up 3 set of tires on it. The OEM 014 and 2 sets of Pilot Powers. As an ex Road Racer and also a big guy 6'5" @ 320 lbs I can say you will not be disappointed in the 14. You can scrape the fairing on one if you leave the fork preload down. The front springs are set up a little soft, You will need to jack the preload up some or Racetech does have stiffer springs now. The rear shock seams ok for steet use, but have preloaded it up some to. It also helps to replace exhaust as that can shave about 30 lbs off the back of the bike

I owned an '03 ZX12. I have plenty of miles on various 14's. I think the 12 was a better handling, more agile bike in the corners. The 14 drags various parts, including the fairing when ridden hard. I don't recall touching anything down on the 12 when ridden basically on the same roads.

I took the 12 to a few track days. Personally, I wouldn't be interested in taking the 14 to one....

I wish I still had my 12, but I do like the 14 alot. Just not for aggressive riding in the corners. Too big, too long and too low for my tastes.

...that is why I have slowed in the corners and added a little something extra for the straights :-)

Unless you really plan to ride a bunch at unsafe levels......the 14 will do you nicely.

Don't listen to any of these guys ,they must've bumped their heads

The 14 is a very decent handler when setup for the rider.
And speaking of the rider , if he is any good then it won't matter what is under him!

It's nice to not need to rev up to get out of a turn with 14 power

i can knee drag tghe 14 or my 600RR, but if your implying any bike corners the same at the same (or requires the same breaking distance before a turn I'm needing some of whatever your smoking because my 600RR flat can brake later and faster approaching the turns and corner faster than my 14 with the same rider. Now accelerating in the straights is another topic

reving up the 14 in a turn is suicidal, I can get my 600RR out of the apex much quicker too without the back wheel breaking out.

The 14 apex will be more deferent to the outside than a smaller bike . For its size they handle great . the power out will make up a lot of the difference. I am looking foward to more track days. I think they are great for the bigger tracks like big willow .

I'm tempted to enter my 14 on the Daytona track instead of my track bike when our CCS/ASRA league races there in the fall.

I still don't think I'll get as low lap times on the 14 as I can the 600, but the raw power on that big track sure will be fun!

I'm hesitant to safety wire the 14, plus I don't have track plastics for it. I'm still tempted to though

Au contraire, the 14 ain't no great handler at all...just like a Busa. For aggressive riding/cornering, I'm with Stevewfl...my 10 is way more agile and surefooted in the corners...14 is nice and "cute" in corners, but is very limited in the twisties, seriously. I don't really agree with you on that
INTIMIDA2OR, I'm a seasoned rider with a lot of track time and there's no way you can compare a 14 to a super sport bike. The better riders won't do well on the big cushy bikes in corners, like a 14. They start getting downright scary when pushed hard. They're ok in the big wide sweepers, but not great by any means...IMO I don't have to rev my 10 to exit corners either...tons of power and TQ at 5K on that bike.

Only seen Busa's on the straight track . 14 is set up much better for tighter handeling than the out dated Busa.

I dont belive that they handle any better . Smaller bikes will be quicker to adjust and maneuver . The 14 can do a corner great the long wheel base and weight makes it response time of direction change slower.

Probably does, but that's why I keep my 10...when I want to hit the turns hard, the 14 just doesn't do it for me..I mean it's a great bike, but it's limited in the handling dept. It's a great all around bike and I ride it more than my 10; comfort is unmatched, but the smaller bikes beat it to a pulp in handling, hands down.

I never disagreed w/ you on that 1bad...not even over there.....

I'm positive I could cut time off laps w/ any litre bike compared to the 14.....just too big/heavy for max handling efforts.....

that so true... the other is the great brakes on the zx14 get sloppy mushy (at least on my bike) after several hard late braking turns ... but it did it on the zx12 also...

i think it is the massive power output that makes handling more challenging on the 14, you really have to think in a turn how hard am i gonna hit it and still survive, the 14 takes you thru curves like back to the future, not like winding the piss out of a 600 with less than half the displacement and even less torque
corner speed is how fast you go in and how hard you hit it on the way out

Yes the least amount of effort is best for track racing . weight would kill it the 14 is not practical for this It will take much more effert and energy. But this was not about racing it was about handeling and cornering .
