Oil Recommendations
I am needing to change the oil in my black 14. I am wondering what you guys are using in yours? I am thinking going to a 20w 50. I live in a desert area in California, and it is starting to warm up out here. My 14 also has been running EXTREMELY hot the last few days, now that the temps are reaching into the 80's and 90's. Also, should I go synthetic, or petroleum?
Any thoughts?

New engines do run hotter...
I use a blended oil.....Repsol
Increase the % of water in the cooling system........1 bottle of Engine Ice and the rest distilled water.

I use Shell Rotella synthetic 5w-40 from Wal-Mart. It costs about $17 a gallon and is a high quality oil. You can make your own semi-synthetic by blending it 50-50 with a regular oil if you prefer. There are some directions on the internet regarding this. Google will find!

Mobil 1 here. 15w40 I live in Az. No oil issues so far.

I change the oil every 5000 miles and about the 4500 mile mark the engine starts to talk to me. Ams-oil 20W-50 seem to quiet the engine nicely.

We were due for another oil thread...........
I use Castrol 10w-40 - bike specific. I like to change my oil fairly often, can't justify dumping synthetic at the drain intervals I use.

Don't know how many miles you have on your bike. You should use decayed dynosaurs until the engine is broken in. I changed the oil at 600 and 1200 miles with decayed dyno oil. Next oil change was a blend. Now I'm using synthetic (Mobil 1 MX 10-40).
14's run hot, especially when new and especially if you are still running the stock setup. The exhaust cans have catalytic converters that trap the heat and the engine runs on the lean side. Mine really cooled down when I installed Brock's Gen 3 and a PowerCommander. Not advertising for Brock, even though I like his product and his customer support. Any aftermarket system that gets rid of those cats will help.

At 8800 miles I am on my 3rd oil change. Change 1 @ 600 - Kawasaki 10/40 premium. Change 2 @ 3000 - Kawasaki 10/40 premium. Change 3 @ 6000 - AMSOil 10/40 High Performance Motorcycle Full Synthetic. Each time I used an OE filter.
I strongly advise against using automotive oils for your bike - there are shear stabilizers, anti-foamers and wet clutch additives in most quality cycle specific oils that can cope with an engine that has a gearbox and wet clutch in the oil circulation, not to mention automotive specific oils have additives that can contaminate your clutch discs and cause them to slip. You paid good money for one of the most badass bikes made today - don't go cheap on the maintenance!
