LOW speed wobble?

Just curious if anyone else has the same issue. If I let go of the grips at about 50mph, as the bike slows to 45mph I get a good bit of wobble in the handlebars all the way down to 40mph. What's odd is the bike doesn't even vibrate much. If you're not looking at the handlebars you might not even notice the wobble. First time it happened, that's what scared me, I looked down and said holy crap, bars were wobble at least 2 inches at the ends, pretty fast too.

Check your front tire carefully for irregular wear. Every bike I have ever owned wobbles when the tire starts to wear. How much weight do you have in your saddle bags?

The only wobble i ever had with the 14 was coming down from a freeway wheelie at some ridiculous speed !
I've since stopped doing that

Agreed the above, also worth checking wheel alignment and if it wobbles with the panniers off.

My old bike did that and it was the front tire being out of balance. Did you just have your front tire replaced? Are your weights staggered or are they all on one side on the rim? It could still show it's balanced, but if the weights aren't staggered, it will wobble. It's worth checking. Hope you get it fixed.

Here are some suggestions.
1. Check tire Pressure (both front and back).
2. Look for a worn bearing both tire and steering. I don't think this will have anything to do with wobble but my axial was pretty dry (grease)? your call.
3. Here is something that surprised me with my ZX-6 Chain length? If your chain is too loose you may get a wobble. If it did not happen to me I don't think I would have bought into this one.

I let go of mine when coasting down a hill, just to relax my arms. My 14 has no wobble.

I know that some bikes are very sensitive to the rider's placement and weight. My ZZR1200 would mildly wobble with the helibar risers on, which aren't much higher than the ones for the 14. Taking them off positioned me forward and put a little more weight on the front tire, solving the problem.

No wobble here, even on a PP that is almost wore out.

phytrax: You might want to check you steering head bearing. Sometimes they will take a set
and loosen up with break-in, or a couple of hard wheelie landings :P

Hint.... Try to avoid the "capsize" mode in the second link :d

If tire pressure is 42/42 on the stock tires, you shouldn't be wobbling...

Meant to respond to this sooner. I haven't really resolved it but I'm thinking the front tire wear sounds very plausable. I started noticing the problem after about 6,000 miles. Although the problem may have been there before and I didn't notice. If I have even one hand on the grips I don't feel anything at all. I haven't checked the tightness of the steering column yet. I'm sure shifting my weight back contributes to the problem also. The weight position is much more of an issue on my KLR650.

I've had two bikes that wobbled when I let the go of the bars. In both cases it was wear on the front tire. Put a new tire on, wobble went away. I checked the balance before putting the new tire on. Balance was fine. Just had some cupping on the front. The 14 hasn't wobbled yet, but will be replacing the front Bridgestone soon as riding seasons starts here in CT. Putting Pilot Powers on the bike.

Look at the tires and suspension settings. Either front tire wear, or a rapid change in steering geometry (suspension settings) on decel is the likely cause.

Thanks, 6000 miles yup I'd expect it to quit handling up to par!

Got the Diablo Stradas on the bike now. The whole bike just feels much smoother and more stable. Didn't realize how bad the front tire was. The was a flat ring around the left side like I was breaking in mild turns, maybe when I'm making U-turns at my makeshift dragsrtip, hmm. Anyway, the wobble is ALMOST gone. It's barely noticable now. Handling is great on the Stradas too so far. I'm looking forward to the longer tread life. Bad tires cost me a trip to Deal's Gap this week. I found out I had a few days off work but my tires weren't up to such a trip. Stradas came in a day too late. Oh well.

Mine is steady eddie!

Strada's wear like iron, but the grip is really poor in the wet from my experience, and about 80% traction of stock in the dry...
Be careful!

Funny, I heard other people say they were very impressed with the Diablo Stradas in the rain. They strongly recommend a matched pair for these since the rear is slick in the middle, were you running them front and back? And how many miles are you getting from them?

I was running both, found around 120 mph on damp pavement , slight curve, the front would push, mostly due to the small contact patch and pointy centerline of the tire.
It seemed to fall in much better on dry pavement, due to the profile, but traction was reduced.
Our pavement is erroded, with more exposed smooth pebbles, and thus i like the sticky stuff more.

I found the strada to take longer to warm up, and were considerably slick when cold.

I rode mine at 130+mph for about 1/2 hr and the tire carcass became very warm,

The tire pressures varied alot more than the pilot sports and bridgestones, (due tothe carcass design IMO) thus did the handling and grip.
I felt the tire overal was less consistant in grip, and would slide or push where the battleaxes, and pilot never would have. The inconsistancy is what I found most unnerving.

Pilot sports will deliver about 75% the longevity of a strada, with more bite.

Coming from a motocross and ice racing background, I may be more sensitive to tire feedback than some. I push the bike pretty hard, till I feel the rubber giving up, or parts drag, and from there throttle it back.
Most (90%+) of the time tire grip is more of an issue than clearance due to the poor roads here.

Some guys have no issue lowering the bike 1" up front, and 3" in the rear, raking out the geometry.
I noticed the front end would push immediatly , after a few hundred miles, decided I could not live with it.
I raised the rear back up to -1" to match the front and bring the steering geometry back into alignment.
Like I said roads here are poor, corner clearance isn't much issue if the road/ tire contact will not allow you to get there.

Sorry to take it off topic,
I prefer the Pilot to the Strada, at any price...
Can't put a price on life or days missed riding, due to wrecked bike!
