Clutch doesn' engage

The last three times I've started the bike in the morning (approx. 55 degrees, 1st start of the day) and engaged the clutch in 1st gear the bike barely moves even with the clutch fully out. After waiting a couple minutes with the engine running and fooling around with the clutch handle adjuster, the bike will engage in first gear and move forward. After that, no problems the rest of the day. Got any ideas on the problem? Does something have to warm up?

What thickness of oil are you using? Is that the coldest it's been when you have started it. I always use the first start up of the day as the stop, look, and listen time. I would think a lil more warm up might do ya good. Sounds like your plates are sticking together. Bleed your clutch line and see if that helps, if not open it up and check it out. Could be burnt clutches but it sure in the hell wouldn't get any better.

How long has it been sitting before this happens?
Sounds like the clutch is drying out, wet clutches need oil, or they will slip and burn up.
By operating the lever while the bike warms you are introducing oil between the plates once again.
What weight oil are you using, and what brand?

other ideas...

Sounds like the clutch plates could be hanging up on the basket when you pull it in to shift out of neutral, when the bike is cold the oil drains off the basket, no lube, plates hang up.
If you do end up tearing into the clutch, make sure the basket is not grooved badly.

I doubt its the hydraulics, as the clutch springs would pull the plates together even if there was air in the system.

When the plates stick together from being warped, the bike will crawl while in gear with clutch lever pulled in, if it doesn't move with clutch out in gear the plates are not contacting, thus I think they may be hanging up on the basket, or the inner friction is wore out.
If they were all wore out, the tranny would slip all the time.

Let us know what you find!

Are you sure the clutch is not slipping when you ride it?
Compare cruising rpm and speed, with a hard roll on at 7000 rpm in 4th or 5th gear, if it slips you'll see the rpm higher than cruising at that speed.

Have you been drag racing it William?

No, I don't abuse or drag my bike. I really baby it but I've been set to drag race an airplane at our upcoming airshow. The plane is an Extra, very aerobatic and light. 1,700 lbs at 375 hp. We will both start on the ground. First to break the ribbon at 2,000 feet is the winner. The only problem is he will get in the air within 200 feet and then use ground effect to build up his speed. The bike will have to go from Land Speed racing gear to drag gear. Brock told me how to take the baffle out of the Smeg so we should make some great noise for the crowd. May have to bring Smokin' down to "learn me how to drag". I've never lost a race... of course I've never been in a race so I'm batting 1,000.

I had the same problem, till I figured out that the right side lever was brake and not clutch...couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go when I grabbed the right side lever to shift instead of the left, but after reading your post, it dawned on me all of a sudden...:P

Clarification: This was written in as a joke or a bad bumpersticker. I do not abuse or condone the abusing of women.
