Front Sprocket Question
Does anyone know what size socket it takes to loosen the nut? I read in one of the threads that it was a 27mm, but my 27 seems too large. Could it be a 6 point? I measured the outer land on the nut and it's 26.88 mm. Thanks for your help.

I don't know what size it is, but you'll need an impact wrench to get it off.

I used johnson bar, 27 mm socket, friend or wife holding rear brake.
Bend out the tab on the lock washer first :P

Thanks. I wound up buying a 27mm 6 point deep well socket. It fits perfectly.

Ya, make sure you flatten the lock washer. I got mine off without a impact wrench but I can't really recommend it. Even with someone standing on the brake and bike in 1st gear, the back wheel was turning. Tool a lot of beating on a breaker bar before it finally came loose.

I just finished installing the 16 Tooth sprocket. After reading all of the horror stories about having to use heat, Johnson bars, excessive force, and having to split the nut, I was prepared for this to be a nightmare. I tried a 4' bar on the end of my breaker bar while sitting on the bike holding the brake. The sprocket laughed at my futile attempt. Then I wedged a 3/8th extension between the rear brake pedal and one of the bolts on the clutch cover to lock the brake on. I pulled out the impact wrench and set the compressor on 125psi and put the impact tool on 300lb.
It was my turn to laugh! The air tool made child's play out of removing the nut. I don't even think I would have had to lock the brake. It was that easy! I'm going to ride it tomorrow and scare myself!!

you'll really like it, especially if you correct the speedo with a speedo healer, NO top speed lost, just quicker getting there.

I looked at the nut carefully after I removed it and didn't see any loctite on the threads. Mine was just on tight as hell from the factory. For reinstallation of the nut, Page 11-7 of the service manual says "Apply molydenum Disulfide oil solution to the threads of the output shaft and the seating surface of the engine sprocket nut."
