zx12 or zx14 ??
I stopped into my local dealer last week and sat on a new 14, too make a long story short my salesman said he would give me high book for my '05 zx12 on trade if I change it back to stock..
Is the 14 overall that much better as far as every day riding, my 12 is more than fast enough so the speed difference is not really a factor for me..
I guess I'm looking for real world ride reports and not magazine test results !!
Post up your likes and dislikes if you will..
Thanks, Mike...

Never rode a 12 but I have to say m 14 is very comfy, especially with Heli risers and Corbin seat.

Mike,
I really liked my 12r and sometime I regret getting rid of it. I had the muzzy bigbore kit in it and it was probably faster than my 14 and for a fact; it dynoed with higher numbers than my 14. To be honest with you there were only two reasons that I bought the 14. The first reason was greed something new came out and I wanted it. The second reason was the gas milage.
Now that I have purchased the 14 and i've had it since May 06, I must admit the ride is much smoother on the 14 than it was on my 00 12r and in the curves it handles as well or better. I also think that it is a lot easier to add power to the 14 than it is with the 12. On the 14 all that you really have to do is remove the fly's and you are in another world right off the bat. I am very happy with the 14 but I had put a lot of money in my 12r and I think that is why I miss it. My wife was not happy with me keeping both bikes therefore I sold it to my best friend so I can still ride it when I want too.

TOBM, don't get rid of your 12, especially with the mods you have put into it. I still have both, and I still LOVE my '03 12. Find a modded 14 to take for a spin. the '04-05 12's were by far the smoothest year model 12's in my opinion...damn near perfect(minus the derestriction process). If possible, keep the 12---you wont regret it.

I still have my 12R. For how long, I'm not sure. My 14 has Brock's pipe, PC3 and map with flies out. It's a monster. Before that it was a pussy below 5k and I didn't care for it at all. Super smooth, though. Seems like the motor's electric compared to the 12R.
One thing I have noticed...my body feels a lot better after a ride in the twisties on the 14 than on the 12R.

Had a 2000 ZX12R for six years and loved it. By the time I sold it she had Marvic wheels, Brembo calipers/rotors, Akrapovic, Ohlins rear etc etc. Have had my 14 for 6 months and apart from the low end "restriction" in the lower gears it is a much more refined machine. Throttle response is much smoother as is the motor. It feels lighter even though it probably is not and can be ridden on longer rides imo. I am not sure how the 14 compares to the newer 12R's but I would go for the 14.

Not sure if you do mostly one up riding or not... but if you put on any miles with a passenger.. the 14 (IMO) is leaps and bounds the better bike. As far as the rest of it.. I certainly will not try to talk "up" the 14... since it is a bike that I decided to buy for my reasons... and every bike (almost) has its strong points... When I rode the 14, it really felt like a "cadillac". I felt that the 12 was definately more of a sports car feel. It was a bit rougher, and felt more aggressive while riding it. The 12 motor seemed to pull harder but I think it is because of the power band that it had. The 14 motor is so smooth that it doesn't feel like it is going as fast. The 14 is a bit deceiving. I would ride the 12, and then ride the 14 and I wondered which was faster. As I got used to the 14, (and broke it in), I watched the MPH and realized how fast it was. (The "flies" pulled made a HUGE difference!!) If you do longer riding, or a lot of city/town riding, I think the 14 is 'easier'. Again, not to cut the 12!!! I just feel that the 14 is a newer technology that you can feel. It seems to be a step ahead of the 12 in that department. For whatever reason, I could only get 100 miles or so on the 12 before my arms and rear end were ready for a break... on the 14 I went 250 miles and was not ready to gas up yet... even though it needed it. I love the gauges, the brakes (which the 12 also is no slouch...) and the lights on both are fantastic. Some people had complained of the heat from the motor being uncomfortable on the 14... but I didn't notice anything with mine. My zx-11 was really bad in the heat department... I miss the 12.. but I do not regret selling it since I have the 14. I also had a 2002 Busa at the same time and don't really miss that bike at all. Not that it wasn't a great bike, but because the 14 for me is better all around (for me). Whatever you do, you will have a great bike. From my honest perspective, I would get the 14. For an additional $1,500 or so , you can do the easy mods... and have a sub 10 second bike that is comfortable, rather good on gas, and a comfy distance rider. It seems to offer the 'best' of all worlds. The last thing I will say is that my wife has riden all of the bikes I have had over the last 12 years... including the Busa.. and when we rode the 14, she yelled from the back that it was BY FAR the best bike she has ridden. (Okay, she is a girl... but she is also brutally honest..) She used to enjoy riding, but now she wants to ride every chance we get. As with anything... the best thing to do is to find a 14 that you can ride to see how it works specifically for you. Maybe you would not enjoy it as much as we do. That is the most honest input that I can give. Realize that I have no reason to sugar coat anything, or to try to brag up the 14. See for yourself. I have a buddy that rode the 14... and he was extremely impressed, but he still loves his Harley. To each his own... as they say. Good luck and good riding!!!

For passenger comfort. My wife refuses to get on my GSX-R1000, but she enjoys riding on the 14. Passenger has a lot more room, especially leg room. I also never was bothered by the engine heat.

Thanks everyone for the great info, the one thing that just blew me away on the 14 (even though I just sat on it) was how comfortable it felt..My high speed days are far behind me, but on occasion I do pick my spots to "stretch" it out a little, so the speed upgrade is good for bench racing with my friends !! LOL Comfort and the ability to ride long distances is more important now and it sounds like this bike excels in that department..
How involved is pulling the "flies", I remember reading about that mod on when I was a member on zx12r.org ??
Thanks Again for the replies..Mike

Actually the engine heat thing might not be so bad, as I get quite a bit of cold weather riding here in upstate NY !!
Leg room for me is also a huge factor as I'm 6'8" tall..

Good thinking, but engine heat doesn't help much, I've ridden a long ways in temperatures down to 35F. Not sure about the 12 but the 14 has a lot more legroom than the GSX-R1000. I wouldn't recommend one of those if your 6'8".

I sat on the GSX-R at the same time I bought the 12, just didn't fit too well !! The R1 was just as bad, the 'Busa actually felt pretty good..The 12 was a left over that I bought a year ago this March, so the dealer made a better deal on it than he did the 'Busa..
