My engine blew up! any one else??

This is the story. It was unseasonally warm so when I got home from work I got on my bike and went to get a hair cut. In town so I wasn't hot rodding the 14 at all at the time.. Road the bike down the road and heard a noise that sounded sort of like a exhaust header leak so I looked down at my headers and I was missing a header spring.. When I got to the barber shop didn't think much of it. When I left I was just cruising down the road and felt a rough rpm feel around 4k. I brought it down a few revs and went back to 4k and felt it again.. Then it started making a ticking sound.. So I decided to pull over and when I started decelerating it got lounder and lounder . Clank Clank Clank.. Now it was loud as hell... So I called the dealer on the side of the road and let him hear it.. He said cut it off.. I threw a rod.. So I towed it home.. He was right it was rod # 3. And yes it had oil. Amsoil.. The dealer asked me all the questions..About me riding it.. Looked for rubber under my tail section checked my oil etc... I have bought some bikes from this dealer ship before.. And the dealer pretty much said that most of the time the manufacture will not pay for blown engines.. The damn thing is that when it blew I wasn't even giving it hell... I have a long history with Kawasaki's since I bought new 1 ZX11D 2 ZX12R 1 ZX10R and now this 14. And I'm not some dumb ass squid that doesn't know how to ride.. The good news is Kawasaki is going to fix my bike under warranty.. The bad news is that the dealer says I need to put all new rings in the bike and replace my clutch while he's in it.. And I have to pay for that. I sort of lost interest in this 14 awhile back and thought about selling it since I haven't been riding it.. But the week before I went for a ride with my friends and caught the bug again and then the damn thing blows up.. Thats my damn luck.. I know I can't be the only one out there.... Fess up fellows I know I'm not the only one.....

Ditto.

I've only got 75 miles on my 14 so far. If the engine blew up, they would have known it was me.

All of the parts are under warranty. Don't let your stealer rip you...a letter from your attorney will easily fix that problem.

Mine was in twice for a valve cover leak. Although ya, that may not qualify as true "engine problems"

Yes the spring that helps the header spring stay in place. That wasn't the issue as you can tell

Man that sucks..........I have 2500 miles of pure hell on my motor , included in that is 300 or so passes down the 1/4.....I can't believe that you ride it harder than I ride mine..
I have not heard of anyone else tossing a rod ...When you say you tossed a rod do you mean a rod came out of the block? That's what tossing a rod means ... Or did you just spin a bearing ? If you mean spun bearing i still have not heard of a zx14 doing that but it does happen to bike from time to time ...I have seen and heard Gixxers and busas spin bearing as well as tossing a rod out of the cases, it doesn't happen often but it does happen...Get a lawyer and make Kawi pay the hole bill....Your bike mostlikely doesn't need rings and it sounds like the dealer is scaming you. If there is a problem with your rings that would be covered ..The clutch is on you just like tires... Keep us posted on what happens .. Smokin..

Well if you had intentions of putting bigger pistons in... now is the time...lol.

I wouldnt pay for shit under the warranty. Id go in to the dealer after they acquire the reference number to fix your bike from Kawi and tell them to take dick in their ass.

Also have them mic the existing clutches to prove to you there is visible wear.

The only possible cause given the facts stated is that the oil pump failed. The EXTRA the dealer is charging you for is probably the money it is going to actually cost in some way to replace the engine. What the hell does the clutch have to do with a thrown rod after all?

The clutch didn't have anything to do with it. I never had a problem with the clutch. The dealer just said that if I buy the other 3 rings and a new clutch for around 280 dollars he would put them in it and want charge me for labor.. Honestly I think kawasaki should eat the rings as well. For the clutch I didn't think that was such a bad price. or is it? As for the oil pump the dealer said it wasn't from oil starvation since the other bearings were perfect condition. But I am not a mechanic.

Well i don't have a printer and there will be no butt packing...But i will say i'm sorry right here were all can read it ..
Here is the deal, if you are right and your motor spun a bearing we all need to know what happened ...And IF you are making up a story we need to know that also ...If it's a story you will be doing this site and the memebers and owners of the zx14 a big disservice....Just like the guy that said he motor locked up and wrecked his bike only to find out later he hit a spike with his front tire that caused the wreck...So post the pictures ....

If it was from oil starvation it would have done damage to all the bearings , NOT just one rod bearing ..If it's just one rod that caused the problem it would mostlikey be out of size from the factory....... We need to see picture to tell more ...Get pictures of the main bearings and all the rod bearings ....What about this tossed rod ?? was it tossed? or just spun ?

To answer your clutch queston ...Yes that a good price for a clutch replacement ... Clutch and fibers are 200.00 bucks .So free labor and parts for 280.00 for 3 rings and a clutch is a good deal...

smokin... you mean steels and fibers? A stock clutch thats never been drag raced should be able to recycle the steels with a brief glass bead. Theres 1/2 the cost savings right there.

The dealer should eat the rings.... otherwise Id be putting a set of JEs in there instead of the stockers....
