Powder Coating

As I understand it Powder Coating is a high temp process.

Is there any danger of warping a structure lke the wheels due to the temperature??

Thinking about getting rid of the ugly brown and PC'ing silver, along with new exhaust pipes.

They will not hurt your parts,......you must remove all bearings and seals though.,...just a thought, but look around for someone that has a 07 w/silver wheels, that is gonna chrome them ,and trade them out.you can also post it in the classifieds, about wheel swap?

What is the normal temperature for powder coating? I was thinking around 500F, which would probably not even hurt bearings, but could mess up seals I'm sure.

Thanks guys for the responses.

Also I understand the stock wheels are PC'ed and therefore don't require stripping first.

Anyone remember who posted photos showing a mesh grill in the space in front of the Foreman grills?

Was thinking a grill in this space and in the space in front of the pipes would look kewl.

My late VFR's black wheels were powder coated to silver a couple of years ago. The front wheel was done with bearings and seals on and they took it pretty well. I protected the seals with large enough washers, a long bolt went inside the front axle.

A word of warning: ask them to do a sample of the paint on a piece of metal before doing anything for your wheels to check that the paintwork won't be hurt by any wheel washing solvents. I had to do the whole work twice since the paintwork from the first round was ruined by a common wheel washing solvent. The second try was succesfull and I was perfectly happy with the results.

When I last had powdercoating done it required a high pressure abrasive cleaning to give a bare metal start surface. Near impossible I would think to keep it out of bearings. Do they now apply it directly? That would make a stock wheel even heavier although I guess a chrome wheel adds some weight. BTW like the VFR I have an 04 as my daily driver. LSL

They sandblasted the old paint away. There was nothing to worry about with the seals and the bearings since the washers (diameter was a couple of inches) protected them pretty well. The heat was a question mark for the seals and the bearing grease, but in the end they turned out to be in good shape.

Pull off the wheels and pull the bearings out should solve that huh?

I talked to patricksperformance.com and they said they powercoat right over the stock powdercoat. Even the candy they just do a chrome powdercoat then the candy over that.

i agree phytrax, just make sure they dont put powdercoat where bearings go, bc theres a good possibility they wont fit back in!

Apparently they are aware of the problem. He said pull of the rotors and he'll pull out the bearings, then put them back in for no charge.
