Nice ride!

Your saddle bags are mounted backwards. Flip them around and they won't be resting on your cans.

I keep going back and forth between buying the red screen and the smoke. Think you convinced me again to get the red one. Nice bike.

+1 Bags would fit better the other way.

zerMatt & phytrax,

Thanks for the info on the bags be on the wrong way; I was wondering why I was having a such a hard time mounting them. I bought the whole set (including the one that goes on the back seat) from a friend in ATL and he did not have the directions and I am in Savannah.

How did you mount the bags?

Go under the seats with the cross straps??

How do you protect the paint from being scratched by thebags when the move.

And yeah they go wide end to the front to the match the slope of the exhaust can.

B True.................How do you like your AP Slip on's? I ordered and received the 18", 2" core ones, but do not have them on the bike yet as my bike is stored for the winter. What size are yours?

Are you happy with the sound of your AP's? Did you notice much of a performance gain?

For those of you with full systems, yes I know they are the way to go for max power, but I prefer the balanced look of 2 pipes on a big bike like the '14. I was looking more for a little 'music' from the bike!

...how'bout someone photochoppin' the stock screen in body color Ducati Paso -style to see what that looks like?...might be interesting...big guys (that would be folks like you and me and bobby mcgee) can't duck under the screen anyways on most sportbikes wihout crinking our necks, so we might as well go for form over function...

vmaxwayne, yes there are velcro scraps that lay under the seat. as for scratching the bike it has like a soft material underneath and on the insides to keep it from scratching the bike.

ZREXER, as for the AP's I really like the sound, they have a very deep rumble. and as you accelerate they seem to get quieter; not whiny. I can not say that I notice a great performance gain from the AP's because I pulled the flies and added the PC and modified my air filter all at once. If I remember correctly I have the 18" 2.5". But one thing that I can tell you for sure; The bike dynoed at 171Hp and 105 lbs of torque. I really wanted to stay dual that is why I bought the AP's but I have been going back and forth about purchasing the brock generation 3. I am just know if I go and buy the generation 3 right now, my wife will not be happy.

RunningFree, the screen is a puig, I bought it off ebay. If you go to ebay and type in ZX14 just scroll through the items and you will find it.

Thanks for the info B True.

By the way, last summer I purchased and used the same Oxford products you have (even same color... Damn red looks good on a black 14!). I packed the side panniers pretty heavy, I'm estimating about 20 to 25 pounds each side. That drawer foam laid down between the cowlings and the panniers will keep paint from being scratched alright but, keep the panniers light. On my 10 day, 1500 mile trip, both rear cowlings cracked at the points they were bolted on, front and rear. Fortunately, the cracks being where they are, they can't be seen from the exterior. But I'm lucky 'cause any further punishment and they would of been holding on for dear life by the blinker wires...

My

Congrats on a sweet looking ride!

Just ordered my red screen and some other parts.

Screw the smaller screen though, I like having a windscreen. If I lay on the tank I can get behind the stock one, just have to have a waist size under 40 inches Guess my shoulders catch some wind, I can feel it pulling on my jacket, but oh well, every little bit helps.

I only run my saddlebags with the mounting straps going OVER the seat, and with the rear cowl removed. Otherwise, you are putting a LOT of pressure on the plastic bodywork and you could have cracking problems like RunningFree.

Also, pick up some of that clear shelf paper (Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, etc), and stick it to your bodywork at the contact points before mounting your bags. That stuff works great to prevent anything from rubbing your paint, and it doesn't detract like that blue masking tape that a lot of people use.

zerMATT > Even with all the straps OVER the seat, the bags still put significant stress on the tailboard. The poor signal lights take quite alot of weight too, I end up supporting half the weight by using bungee hooks on the rear grab rail.

Oh yea, the bags started floating at 130mph and lifted off at around 150mph, luckily my passenger was sitting on the straps

I'll suggest either use brackets to take weight away from the plastic, or go for hard luggage.

I put 2,700 miles on my '14 in September with Cortech sport saddle bags & top bag. Tied VERY tight over the seat and to the frame. No movement at all, no cracked plastic.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better bag system than the Cortech bags for the ZX-14.

That doesn't look easy at all....

I like the idea of hard luggage, but there's absolutely NO way I'd want all that junk hanging off my bike the rest of the time, nor would I want to have to remove/install it whenever I went on a trip.

Soft luggage works fine for me, as I only go on 3+ day trips that would necessitate it's use 3-4 times per year. And then my system takes me all of 5 minutes to install or remove.

The initial installation does take some doing...but it's worthwhile after.

The only thing permanent on the sides are the four mount brackets. The racks themselves come off within seconds, literally! Each rack is attached to four mount points (A, B, etc in bottom picture) via what Motech calls quicklocks. Just 4 screws per side, turn ¼ turn to lock or unlock.

The alurack is also permanent but I didn't think it interfered with the VFR's good looks. I'm speculating that the 14's look won't be altered much either. Here again, the system is simple. There's a top plate that screws on to the alurack at three points with the same ¼ turn - lock/unlock principle. Easy! I know, I had the system on my VFR.

Bottom line: when loading or unloading the bike, each rack takes 15 seconds to mount to its respective brackets. Same goes for the top plate to the alurack. Estimate also 15 seconds total time spent picking up or setting down the items. So that's a total time of 1 minute. Then, flinging each Givi case onto racks and top plate or taking them off is roughly a total of 30 seconds. Total elapsed time: 1min30sec!

Beat that with soft luggage! Ya can't. Not unless you leave it on, permanent like...!

I wouldn't go back to soft luggage, ever.
