Rear brake issue

Has anyone had a problem with the rear brake locking up. This has happened to me 3 times in 4500km. Each time the brake was being used lightly. First time at about 80km/h the other 2 at very low speeds ie almost stopped. I have had the disk & caliper checked and cleaned but nothing apparently wrong. When it locks it skids the wheel but releases very quickly. It is just like the pads grab for a brief instant & then let go.

The only time mine locks up is when I apply it too hard.

Same here, and you have to apply it pretty darn hard to lock it up... it's a fairly weak break.

Weaver...learn how to use your brakes...problem's between the seat and the "steering wheel"...you got one of those on your bike?

Is this your 1st bike by chance?

How much lever freeplay do you have ?

The dealer might have left you with zer0 slack meaning the brake actuates as soon as the pedal is applied with no freeplay.

Ive only locked it in the rain or when braking hard with both brakes...lightening the rear. Otherwise the brakes are pretty decent...aside from the noise sometimes. My 98 blackbird could stop so hard you would see spots...no shit!

Only locked mine once when a cage pulled out in front of me. That was only because I was on the fronts so hard there was no weight on the back. I have riden with a couple guys that hit the pedal with their toe and don't even know it. Don't ask me how, I saw the brake light and asked "what's up with that" later.

Never had any problems with the rear brake. Stopping from over 200mph on the runway It was sensitive enough to play tunes with the rear tire. On the road I never use it.

Are your disc and pads in good condition and are the caliper seals allowing the pistons to move freely? Make sure the brake is not sticking on.

Mine is pretty weak, as well. Weaver, is your rear rotor rusty, by chance?

They're all weak, by design. Hitting 'em hard will lock 'em up...there's not much of a medium there.

I pretty much only use the rear when coming down hill and there is something in the road that may cause the front to slide........and I apply the rear here and there just to keep the pads and rotor clean. No problems ever here......

I've only locked mine up a few times, and every time it was because I was giving it a bit too much foot for the situation... and it's usually combined with a bunch of front brake.

The most memorable little lock-up I had was coming up over a hill, in a turn, and I got a strong burst of Ka... I grabbed the front binders hard and hit the rear a moderate amount, the rear started to slide a little (out), so I let off and it came right back in line. It was completely my fault, and I was ready for it, so it wasn't too much of a surprise.

Never use your rear brake unless you're in a shopping center parking lot in the rain, or you trail brake because you race Superbikes.

When you brake, even using the rear brake only, the weigh of the bike shifts to the front and your rear wheel has no weight on it, causing it to lock up easily and you could high side.

CounterSteer, check this out, a contribution!!!!!!!!

A little rear brake also helps to settle the bike during hard braking, but you have to be very mindful of how much input you give... just like everything, it only takes practice. Honda was nice enough to build this in to many of their bikes with their "linked braking" system. Although some love it and some hate it... just like everything else in this world.

I only lock my rear brake on purpose

Otherwise i've never locked my rear brake during my normal riding and i nearly always use both brakes unless certain conditions choose that i don't!

i wouldnt take riding advise from someone who doesnt own a motorcycle.
my zx-12 had horrendous brakes, so, like everything else, i had to throw money at the problem to find a solution (brembo etc). i still havent really formed an opinion on the zx-14 brake setup, but its definetly better than the 12. i think braking is like accelleration where it is subjective to the riders skill - if youre happy with the 14s setup as it rolled out of the dealership, then cool... but some people need a little more to be satisfied.

That bet is still available liberal college boy, should I reduce the amount down to your weekly allowance?

Nothing wrong with the 12's brakes if you know what you're doing, but if you've been only riding a few years you don't know any better.

i bet my 12 will outperform your imaginary 12 in every field, and i also bet that you are too pussy to meet anyone here aside from your lovers fish and pk.
if you even had a 12 then you would know how miserable the brakes are. the best youve ridden is the best you know - so i guess i do know better than you.

Rear brake cause the bike's "weigh" to shift forward with no weight on the rear huh? I guess that's why pro's tell you to use the rear brake to settle the rear down, to help it lift up in the air huh? -- that's a good one...

CS, give it up...he has no clue...obviously. You're fighting a losing battle -- science works differently on his "bike" than everyone else's.

This is because most of the weight of the bike and rider transfers forward onto the front wheel when any brake is applied. A common example of weight transfer is when you trip on a concentration camp victim your feet stop but momentum keeps the top of you going and you fall flat on your face breaking your big nose.

Of course some noses are bigger and the effect is more pronounced.
