A lot of Jap-bike brand loyalists appear to be intimidated and defensive regarding the 1098.

Competition makes things good for us consumers, and I hope the Italians rock with this new model.

...hell, there's always the R1-LE for the loyalists and defenders ...there's a bike for everyone, for every need, and for every budget...if I bought a 1098 and showed up on Palomar with two inches of chicken stripes on my rear tire and shiny knee pucks, do you think that I'd care if the talented hard-cores with race rubber on their 600s/650s//750s/1000s/et al scoff at my decision to buy this red beauty?...hell no!...I don't think anyone who does buy one of these will, either!...I think that for the majority of street riders out there on whatever bike they happen to be on its all about the pride of ownership and how it makes them feel...and the 1098 would make me feel good, shiny pucks, chicken stripes, and all

...I say the ones who are fortunate enough to buy this bike will buy it no matter what anyone says or what else is available out there....AMEN?.....amen!

I would hope that for whatever reason somebody buys a bike, they don't care what others think of it, their riding abilities, etc. I bought my ZX-11 in 1994 for my own reasons (I liked the looks) - it just happened to be the fastest thing around at the time. After 50,000 miles, I still love it. Last year I took a look at the ZX-14 but didn't get that same feeling - the ZX-10R next to it was far more to my liking. Now Ducati comes out with the 1098, and it looks gorgeous. I'm sure it has more than enough power to challenge my meager talents, and the maintenance doesn't worry me for the amount of riding I get away with these days. The fact that the nearest dealership is 120 miles away does have me concerned, but not enough to stop me from getting one if it looks as good in person as it does on my screen. As far as the price goes, $15K is about my limit, so that is definitely a factor - but only with the Ducati in this scenario. I wouldn't want a ZX-14 for $5K, let alone $10K; it just doesn't appeal to me. The same is true of pretty much every other bike, so the comparison isn't relevant in my case, but that's just me. I guess I'm... kinda picky.

Because THEY NEVER WILL. It's really a pretty lame question.

How about a new poll? If a 10 ct and a 1ct diamond each cost $1,000, which one would you buy? DUH!!!

I'm sticking with my 1ct diamond because it goes faster... and it fits my fat ass better for long road trips. That 10ct diamond might look better and be worth more in the end, but it doesn't suit my purposes. Besides the fact that IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

i beg to differ

I have a 2003 Duc 998 bip. 19400 miles on the clock and still going strong, Have placed the order for the 1098S (monoposto)(25% insurance reduction) due here April 2007.
The mistress (998) has never put a foot wrong, power delivery is perfect and the noise is exceptional at full chatter 11800rpm. I use her every day to comute to and from work and have to say that while the service intervals may be small and the bills not so small, who gives a sh!t...Car drivers crap themselves as you pass them in 2nd gear with the carbon termi's emitting that unmistakable sound (it's like two pitbulls fighting over a small child).
If you want cheap and simple by a Toyota. I've never seen a chick look at a corolla 2.2l d4d and go weak at the knees. Ferrari on the other hand are the makers of 4 wheel fanny magnets.

...and there's about 10 "chicks" on the planet that would know the difference between a Ducati 1098 and a Honda Dream...

Now we're spending $4,500 extra because "chicks dig it". What next? Does the Duc make your penis longer too?

More than $4500.

We are getting royally screwed in Ireland, We pay VRT (30%) and VAT (21%) on all new bikes and cars
The 1098S starts at EUR 22750 and if you add Termi's (which you would) EUR 2-2500 + carbon hugger and alarm EUR 500 min.
Total EUR upto 25750
Multiply by 1.3 to get $ 33475
For that price they better chuck in a knob upgrade as well...LOL.

Sorry... was comparing the US 1098 (non-S) to the US ZX-14.

You know, you can save all those UK taxes if you move over to the states.

+1

The only chicks who know the difference between a Duc and any other crotch rocket are the ones looking for a sugar daddy. It's not like they are going to walk up to your bike with their girlfriends and start pointing out the Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes, overpriced wheels, and carbon-fiber bits.

I've always thought it was a little funny that the only Ducati's I ever see are when I ride by the Ducati shop. There may be one in the parking lot "visiting", but the rest are still on the showroom floor with "Do Not Touch" signs on the seats.

I'm really quite happy for all you guys who have always wanted a Duc but didn't want to drop that much coin. Now that they are priced more reasonably, I hope they can produce and sell more. Who knows, a little increased volume may even entice them to drop the price more - or better yet, show the Japanese bikes that better-engineered components can be included on a more "average" street bike. If they can keep the prices low-ish, the entire industry will have to take notice and adjust the game plan.
