Are you saying Mike, that the ZX-14 has a face only a mother could love. The good thing about the ugly one's is that the're depenedable, they won't leave you stranded on the road for the next best thing.

Girl #1 can at least take care of you if you ever become incapable wiping your ass, you know, when you have that stroke from going too fast on the 14, she can just lift you up and do it for you. That's true love just like the ZX-14. (I know, I'm gross)

Mike I love the analogy and the pics, but also just like women the Duc is fine and will surely be envied. But after the honey drips off of the moon what are you left with? Can she cook? Can she clean? Will she break a nail on the way to work?

Now on the other hand if money was no object I wouldn't mind having one. It's sure to be a collector item.

...here's a twist for those looking for high-mileage tuning intervals: Ducati 1098 vs Yamaha R1-LE....comaparable moto-sexiness....comparable rider focus group....comparable price....and one gets tuned every 15K miles....ok....discuss

....I'd still take the Duc just because I want to....

OK still not quite the same but getting closer. From the Ducati site.

50% less maintenance cost on every 2007 Ducati
We are proud to announce that all 2007 Ducati models require less frequent service, fewer parts and less labour during each service and, as a result, greatly reduced scheduled maintenance costs - by as much as 50%.

worm... yamaha's have always had huge miles between services... way back when I owned my FZR1000 I remember thinkin to myslef' that the bike would be wrapped around a telephone pole many miles before it was due for its first valve service.

+1

I remember when I bought my '85 V-Max and the valve interval was somethin' like 26,000 miles. I was used to my old Kz900 that I did every 3000 miles because of the valve seats that retreated into the head. Later, as I recall, the V-Max was given an updated interval of 32,000 miles . . . I still checked 'em every 8-10k miles anyway.

I remember changing one or two shims on the Max to keep the valves in the middle of spec., they were never "out of spec" per se, unlike my Kz900 and '83 GPz1100 which NEEDED shimming (out of spec.) on a regular basis. The 1100 wasn't so bad with only a few but the 900 was a pig. The only hassle with the 1100 was the shims were under the buckets requiring cam removal for adjustment.

I love it when stuff like this happens....

it's saturday night... you're in the garage working on your car or bike .... you're following the instructions from the shop manual... you get everything taken apart.... now it's about 9pm.... you turn the page and the next step says "USING (insert OEM's name) TOOL PART NUMBER.... "

The question should be "can she dial maid service"!? If so, who cares about any of those chores.

The Duc looks so awesome I'm beginning to think the same about the maintenance concerns...who cares!?

Too many stinkin' times! I've had to make so many tools or improvise with existing tools that I MIGHT be OK from here on out. I've had to cringe and bite the bullet by cutting Snap-Off tools to get at a bolt or cut, grind and weld others to make something resembling the tool called for in the manual. That's what we get for not reading the manual in ADVANCE . . . must be a male thing.

I find it really hard to believe that people are voting here based on fact... if you compared the two bikes you'd be hard pressed to justify paying the same for the 14 as a duc... take a look at all the bits the duc comes fitted with...
Yup, the Duc is a very impressive machine, both from a mechanical and sexy point of view. On the other hand, maintenance is maintenance, and I'd rather be riding than to have my bike sitting up at a dealership waiting in line with all of the other Duc's for a valve adjustment. Not to mention the hassle of getting the bike to-and-from the Duc dealer for each of those visits... unless they had a "service loaner" program.

It's kinda like buying a BMW car because off of your other upper-middle-class friends did. Yes, we all know that BMW makes wonderful cars, but that's not why the yuppies buy them. Most of the people that buy BMW cars don't ever "drive" them the way that they were designed to be driven, mostly because the drivers who buy them don't know how to exploit their capabilities.

This whole exchange makes me think of many Duc owners that I know who's motorcycles sit around in their garages most of the time because they don't ride very often, or because they have another, less expensive to *operate* motorcycle that they prefer to rack up miles on.

Besides, a top-of-the-line repli-racer Duc will never sell for the same price as a ZX-14 (or ZX-10R, CBR1000RR, YZF-R1, etc), so why even ask the question?

why ask the question? I think it's because few and far between are the people who use a bike like and R1 or a 14 as their primary source of transportation. Bikes like this are luxury products purchased by people because of emotional attachment and brand loyalty... (just my $2 werth)

I agree with that statement completely. That's partly why I don't see ZX-14 consumers seriously looking at a top-o-the-line Duc. The Duc is a completely different ballgame, and it takes a lot more of an investment to own. By investment I'm referring to purchase price, maintenance costs, plus dedication to the brand every time you have to leave it at the dealership for service... potentially when you'd rather be riding it.

Nobody's saying that you're wrong for wanting the Duc, it just takes a change in perspective to own a purpose-built tool like a 999/1098/etc, that's all. There are plenty of great choices out there, it just depents on your needs and desires.
