yeah..the best riders in the world are the 'mericans, the steely eyed mavericks that they are.....

get a grip.. Growing up in London I know of many people that rode bikes as their daily drivers and rode all year round, rain or shine in everything barring snow and Ice. True year round riders unlike what I observer overwhelmingly here in the US where our bike is more likely our toy (albeit a serious toy) rather than primary transportation that mostly gets ridden when the weather is co-operative.

never understood the 'Poo-pooing" some make of ABS equipped bikes as if those that choose to use it arent capable or unskilled and obviously arent as good a rider as "I" am.

It's a device that is there when you need it most (presumably) and will more than likely be quite welcome when that horrifying sphincter puckering instance happens as those that have experienced it have attested to and could do nowt but grab a fistfull of lever and lived to tell the tale.

It's a shame that often people comment that "you should have practiced more, if you had any skill you will never lock 'em up even when in an emergency".

I personally dont believe such statements, the simple fact is that there are variing skill sets all along the bell curve and even the most accomplished of riders in the most ideal of environments (track) have gone down and realistically if you ride long enough you will probably have an 'offing at some point or another and in all likelyhood it would be caused by someone other than yourself, probably some young chick driving a huge SUV while yakkin' on a cell phone carreening down a major roadway at twice the posted speed limit whilst utterly oblivious to their surroundings (no I dont hate women and SUV).

The debate about the weight it adds to the bike seems trivial on a bike that is already on the heavy side..the ZX-14 is hardly svelt or will ever be svelt, and extra 6-LBS is trivial in my view especially if you use your bike on the street and highways you likely have luggage in some form or another that easily weighs more than the pound or four the ABS hardware adds. Hell my backpack and my "stash" easily weighs more than the ABS hardware albeit the differences with unsprung and sprung weight.

I say make it optional, those who want it get it, those who dont,..dont, hell make it so that you can easily disable it..with the applicable signed legal waiver form of course.. and lets all just go riding.

I for one would prefer to see fewer R.I.P threads in the various forums I frequent. I'm pretty sure your all know that Traction control is on it's way down the pipe. I believe all options should at least be optional so that we can take or leave what we will, i've never had a bike with ABS but I dont think one whit less of anybody that does!

Give it another five years - I'll put money on it you'll see it on sportbikes as well.
Not over here of course - you're all too good.

In 5 years ABS technology may be worth having on a true litre sportbike.

Sounds like you came from the R1 forum?

No kidding now, are you serious about those statements? Really are you serious..?? You are an engineer right? Not a bouncer..no disrespect to bouncers intended..

Why would a learned man think and verbalize things like this??

It's not a technology issue so much as an attitude and ignorance thing.
Witness the not untypical responses on this forum.

BTW I didn't dredge up this subject again, but now it's back I can't help myself ...my own little crusade

oh its technology, or have you not watched what racing bikes are equiipped with? Yes to computer traction control HELL NO to the ghey anti-lock.

I assume one day ABS will be on litre bikes, just not for another 5 years or so

OK that's been trotted out so many times now. Get this.
ABS in it's current form is inappropriate for road racing because one of the many techniques required in that discipline is to be able to "float" the tyre contact with the track surface at will. How could you "back it in" with ABS?
On occasions racers have to lay it down, particularly once they're off track and heading for the - wall - bales - fence, etc. To do this they have to be able to break traction at the appropriate time.
Those are just two examples.
I'm certain that ABS has and is being explored for racing, but the system has to be far more sophisticated than for road use, and riders must be able to disable quickly at will.

The fact that it is not seen on racebikes at present is NOT a reflection on it's value in real world everyday use for street motorcyclists.

Correction, not on race bikes AND not on ZX14 "true sportbikes" sold in the USA.

Correction, everyday use for EUROPEAN street motorcyclists.

I don't really care, we are not plagued with ABS wannabee ZX14s in this hemisphere.

Even little girls choose against ABS because its so

I have had one "off" in my motorcycling lifetime. Something happened up ahead really quickly, I panicked, grabbed a handful of front and down I went. Have you ever washed the front tire out? It's not a nice feeling I can assure you. Lock up the rear and you can save it....lock up the front and nine times out of ten it's "goodnight"....
Luckily in this instance there was nothing coming the other way. If there had have been I doubt very much whether I would be sitting here typing this now. I wasn't hurt badly but my bike was taken to the scrapyard. I have no doubt whatsover that in that situation again, ABS would have kept me upright, and saved my machine.
We all like to think we are "invincible" and can handle anything that the roads throw at us. We're not. We are human and it's not just car drivers that make mistakes. If ABS can help avoid one mistake, that's a plus in my book.
And as for ABS being gay???? Jeez, the Ryder Cup was last year.....we won it fair and square.....get over it.

Well ok, but I ride track and have a habit of preloading the rear brake for the front in hard braking situations, not "grabbing a handfull of front brake" geez

we won it fair and square <---interesting, who is "we" were you riding or part of the pit team?

And WTF is the "Ryder Cup"? Some european golf event where the carts are ABS equipped? I never did get the golf thing.

How do you like the bike??!! It is hard to get off isn't it?? I have not ridden in over 4 months due to the winter snow we get here in Wisconsin... I will get that same 'brand new' feeling when I break it out in a couple of weeks...
How do the brakes feel??!! Can you tell that it has ABS on it, or not? The brakes on the 14 are really impressive. In all seriousness (for us who are curious) what do you think of the ABS ride after the 320 miles? Thanks..
