valve cover leak

hey guys, as you know some of us have valve cover leak from left side including myself.
on friday i had a chance to clean up the area very good with degreaser with removing the side fairing. rode saturday and sunday ( beautiful weather out here) put about 400 miles on the bike and NO MORE LEAK. i am hoping that problem went away and don't have to do any warranty work. just want to let you all know.

oil is half way on the little glass indicator now. i think when i change the oil 1200 miles ago, it might have been more than half. i don't think that has anything to do with it, does it?

When your British bike quit dripping oil, it was a sign it was time to add some more!

Let me give you some advice?

The three channel valve cover gaskets KAW uses (if the 14 is like the 12) are on/off.

They are almost always slightly over-torqued on the left and right banks and properly torqued in the center.

They compress when torqued and do not reseal well. Oh yeah - $40 too.

IF your 14 valve cover gasket is leaking, I would:

1) Buy a new gasket
2) Clean the valve cover (and more importantly gasket channel) with degreaser
3) Run a skim coat of RTV over both sides of the new gasket before reinstalling
4) Reinstall with meticulous attention to torque. I use a 1/4 drive socket and two fingers.

If the 14's valve cover bolts are like the 12's, they are a torque flange design and will only tighten down so far, period. This is to keep idiots from warping the cover but can also result in snapped bolts for ape's, and leaks for reused gaskets.

It's easy to fix, but you have to be diligent in your repair.

They come with a one year unlimited mileage warranty. Take it to the dealer and have them fix it.
