installing pistons

just a stupid question, but how are they installed on a motor where you have to split the cases? Do you have to drop the rods and pistons down the cylinder or slide all 4 pistons in while mating the 2 cases?

You have to first split the crankcase halves, then remove the connecting rod big end caps, pull the crankshaft and then pull the piston up out of the cylinder head side.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

I'm just trying to remember if I could have done that withe the twelve.I thought the rod big end was too wide.I guess there is a plus for assembly on the 14.Being able to do one at a time instead of pairs.

Can the case be split while still in the frame?

You can do it this way on the 12,
put all 4 pistons in the cyclinder and push them down to contact crank 1 at a time.
